    I have one amp that has an EF86 circuit and I love it. There is something special about that tube and what Vox has built around it.

    Thanks for your video. I just bought myself a 64 Vox AC10 twin Super Reverb, near mint and stupidly rare. Your video on the vibrato setting sold it to me! :)

    I have this exact amp, a '64, those speakers are indeed Elacs' they just have the bell cover on them which can be removed by unscrewing.

    Such a wonderful unique amp. I first tried and gigged one in around 1979 and never forgot how good it was. Five years ago That amp went on sale again from the same owner, but the price was 3000$ that I didn't have at that time. Got the reissue in 2016 and I'm happy. The new model has enough of the original Mojo to please me and hit the spot. But the original would be nicer for sure! And you're right about the two 10", they are very important to the sound ;-)

    Sounds amazing, nice! A point of clarification - when you’re detailing the AC-30 history, the “integrated Top Boost” models started as early as early 1964. I have one, copper panel and all. Not the add-on panel kit in the back.

    I remember when you first mentioned you wanted one of these on the podcast. Now it's for real and being profiled. I suppose dreams do come true! The 60s 335 into the 60s Vox sounds great - can you profile the guitar too please 😂

    I have this exact amp, it might as well be it's twin, those speakers are indeed made by Elac, they are identical to the blue Elac 10N78's but they have the bell cover which unscrews off.
    They do indeed sound incredible!.

    I just built me a replica of an Ac-10 but with a single speaker. Same L-shaped chassis as I followed the schematic to the letter. Is the ef86 channel quieter on your amp versus the Normal channel? The normal channel on mine is loud as ever but the other one is quite quieter. Like half of the volume when dimed and yet everything in the circuit is correct. Great video by the way. 🙂

  • @friendsandfuncanada
    @friendsandfuncanada Před 3 lety

    What preamp tube in normal channel? And EF 86 tube suggestions? What you got in the PI? I have a custom amp based on an ac10 twin and need new tubes.

    Have you discovered the secret " amplitude knob " and its effect on this amps performance ?

  • @jamesnortonofficial1566

    Twin 10s are the best !why they don’t make these anymore ,I don’t get it ?

  • @alaricmusic
    @alaricmusic Před 3 lety

    The AC15 came before the AC30. The latter was built because bands needed more volume. The first AC30 had EL34s (yes like a Marshall plexi or Selmer zodiac 30) but these were quickly replaced with EL84s. The EF86 was removed from the AC30 due to microphonics. Vox used the EF86 preamp design from consumer applications and the high gain in said configuration makes it more microphonic than it need be, not a great fit for guitar amp combos but oh the sound. Players missed the “sparkle” of the EF86 so Vox stole the boost/EQ design from Gibson and used it to create the top boost.

    what about the 65 vox ac10 srt like on the doug and pat show if ya had that profile i'd love to purchase that from ya to

    • @ToneJunkieTV
      @ToneJunkieTV  Před 4 lety

      Mark Grimm My understanding is that they are basically the same amp. SRT stands for Super Reverb Twin. Super was used to denote a head and cab instead of a combo. Reverb because the amp has built in reverb and Twin because it had 2 speakers. My amp is an AC10 Twin, so... 2 speakers, not a super (head and cab) so it’s a combo and mine has no built in reverb. Which is would like but for the purposes of profiling...we couldn’t capture it anyways. Info is a little scarce but from what I can see all AC10s that year used the sale tubes etc so I believe SRTs, AC10s and AC10 twins are the same circuit. The SRT is the rarest of the bunch though. It didn’t even appear in the box catalog for that year.

      Check out the Doug and Pat show. Henry Amplification cloned one following the schematic. On one of the shows, they talk about how it’s a completely different amp. You can get a Henry for $1600 without killing the bank for a $4k vintage head.

    Great video and amp :) You got the history backwards tho... an AC30 is a scaled UP AC15, not the other way around ;-) Also, you could order a 1x12 or 2x12 AC15 (and a 1x10 or 2x10 AC10 for that matter)
