    I think the problem with air cylnders without feedback is you have no way to control the distance they move, they just push to full length. Or the air compresses and doesn't move against the load if it's too much, but then explosively moves to full limit if the load is suddenly removed. That could break the wearer quite badly. Hydraulics and servo motors give much better control as they don't compress gas. Even if they are overloaded they won't go out of control if the load is suddently removed.

    • @nomadcontrafact6305
      @nomadcontrafact6305  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yes, in theory there is such a problem. But it can be solved in several ways. For example, rigid stops are placed directly into the frame, which will prevent the joint from bending further and damaging the operator. Secondly, adjusting the pressure in the cylinders using a receiver, in which the operator sets the required pressure specifically for a given load. Thirdly, the working fluid itself is air, it is compressible, that is, the pressure decreases when entering a wide pneumatic cylinder from a narrow tube. And therefore, there is no hard actuation or stopper; in the initial and final stages of movement, a soft and slightly moving small stroke of the rod in the cylinder is obtained

    Given the small actuation distance required to stiffen the spin I would recommend maybe switch to a cable tensioning system. basically replace the hose with a cable and a small motor with a deeeeep reduction gear box to get high torque without driving up mass and power requirement much. The gear box could be something low profile like a planetary, harmonic, or cycloidal drive given how little of the cable needs to be retracted in order to straighten the spine. It would be a lot safer too since you wouldn't have a pressurized, puncture sensitive hose strapped to your back just waiting for you to fall backwards and have it blow out your eardrums.

      Thought about it. But such a system would have several drawbacks. First, its complexity will increase. Secondly, it will resist movement. Thirdly, it will give too little benefit. The disadvantages outweighed the advantages, and it was decided to abandon this in this model.
