  • We'll be honest, over the years on Translogic we've featured a lot of potentially scary tech. Like in many facets of life though, often the things that seem the most frightening actually turn out to be some of the most incredible. On this episode, we've hit new heights of both fear and amazement as our host Bucko actually gets to drive a fully functional, bipedal, outrageously badass mech suit. Stop reading. Just watch.

Yeah but tanks has a very specific and useful purpose worthy of mass production. These machines will struggle to find a use in society worth of mass production. Using them as war machines wouldn't be viable because they would be too easily disabled (probably by tanks ironically). Even an ordinary vehicle could make it useless pretty easily. These could be used in a construction type of industry maybe. I think in the end these will be more of a curiosity or used in some kind of sporting event.

It could have simply been that people stopped funding the project. Maybe someone thought that building these would be a waste of money and pulled the plug. Being able to pilot something this unique and sophisticated would be life-changing, but unless it can pay for itself, the Method2 exosuit will probably remain purely aesthetic.
But also, who wouldn’t want to be part of this project? The Method2 is a technological game changer, if it got put to good use, this could change everything! Since the moment humans were put on this planet, we have wondered how to grow beyond our physical limitations, and now we have the answer! Science, engineering, technology, it’s the key to something greater than even the people who created it, and not a lot of people understand that.

It would be cool to see the Valve Index's design being implemented into the hand controls. It could be semi-free floating instead of fully free floating. What I mean is that the control system would be strapped to your hands like the Index and you would still be able move your fingers while also being able to access your physical controls for weapon manipulation and computer OS control, but it would also be connected to a series of belts, motors, and other machinery to provide 1:1 arm movement. This way, if the mech's arms meet with any kind of resistance, it would be sent to the control system as a restriction in the motors so you would feel instantly that there's something in your way or if you hit something.

I think that's intentional. They want the mech to always be balanced when walking, so they need to move the mass to be aligned with the foot on the ground. Which is, I'm guessing, why they need the upper part to be similarly weighted to the legs, so it can counter the weight of the lifted leg. The problem is the mass of this mech looks to be roughly equally distributed, unlike humans and birds that have a massive body separated with the head by a neck. Humans and birds, therefore, can shift their massive body for balance while counter-shift the their light head so it remains stable. This mech can't.
It would be interesting how they will solve this. My best guess (aside from dramatically changing the bodyplan) is to have wider footprints like a bird with toes that can be curled/retracted when lifted so as to not collide with the other leg when stepping. That way the need for the rocking motion can be greatly reduced, while also adding to the passive stability of the whole thing. Another more clunky solution would be to have an extra mass that can be shifted freely, functionally similar to a two-legged dinosaur's tail.

Honestly, I can see the torso fitting onto tank treads for smoother mobility until bipedal motion can be ironed out, sort of like the mecha tanks from Legend of Korra.

Everyone talks about how it's missing the plasma cannon and the chaingun but let's, let's imagine something real quick.
You're a soldier in 2060, you and your squad are in the heat of urban combat, gunfire is constant. You have some explosive options, that stuff has gotten small enough now that you can carry it.
Then, you hear a thunking. Loud thunking, getting closer.
The wall behind you *explodes*. You're thrown around, but you see what did it.
One of these fucking things, with *Sword and Shield*, shreds half your platoon with a few swings. You shout for a RPG, someone shoulders one, gets it up, fires. The thing's trophy system goes off and neutralizes the rocket midair, and it returns fire with the micromissile racks on it's back. Someone tries hiding behind a concrete pillar, but the sword, heavy enough to do it, cleaves through the concrete. It turns and looks at you. Faceless, armored carapace looks at you, near featureless except for where you can see that bullets have bounced off the armor, the slight gouge where an RPG had previously struck it. There was no chance.

It walks in a similar manner the ones i make in Simpleplanes move. Feet always parallel to the floor. Only this one sways more. It is just a pod with arms and legs though. If we would want it to walk like a human, it'd need a spine to counter the swaying.
That's my theory, at least. I've yet to find time to begin creating a spine in that game. Perhaps something simpler, like 2 hinges to sway the hip and stabillize the body. Mm.

Sadly, I have to give this update to anyone who’s wondering what became of this.
The businessman in the video has been sentenced to 7 years for workplace abuse, animal cruelty, assault and is facing other charges such as rape.
Hankook is currently down and it seems like this project is dead. Make no mistake though; the fact that it got this far means that governments are definitely developing something better with an abundance of resources… so all is not lost.

Eventually these would be controlled by macro-moves, the pilot would give simple direction and let the walker decide how and where to step. A kick would have to be an added macro so the mecha would balance it's self and the pilot select the object of the kick. The mecha is going to need a basic A.I. so piloting one would almost be like riding a horse, you can steer it but it's going to control the movement while you do the detailed work with the arms.

Time is telling. In late 2021, the tech hasn't yet seen the light. In general, I appreciate the innovation. First thought: I would redesign the hand controls, making them similar to gauntlets in order better to facilitate the interface with the user. My other pondering is about the rigidity in general. If the suit were to fall or tumble, I fear everything would quickly crumble; the suit needs to be more fluid and adaptable to different environments and situations. However, overall, the design is a great effort.

as far as war goes, mechs would only really be useful in two broad contexts:
one being the small, fast, and agile variety of mechs. specifically to boast a higher degree of mobility than a tank, allowing the use of an armor element in environments otherwise inaccessible to tanks, like rocky mountains or dense forests.
the other being mechs so big and so heavily armored to such a degree that it offsets the inherent flaw of being relatively easily crippled. im talking big enough simply building a bigger tank stops being a viable option.
