  • What are antinutrients and should we avoid them? Some of the antinutrients are lectins, phytates and oxalates. These are plant compounds that bind to minerals and can cause kidney stones, digestive distress and autoimmune conditions. 𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗢 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 ↓

    Do you avoid any (or all) antinutrients?

    • @rawbacon
      @rawbacon Před 4 lety +16

      No, small portions may even be beneficial. Eat 70-90 percent animal foods and you'll be gold. The world somehow forgot the concept of a "Side Dish"......A nice portion of meat with a scoop of a vegetable or two on the side. Of course if you have a specific problem with something then avoid it like the plague either permanently or temporally until you heal.

      I try to consume calcium with oxalates and phytates. I don’t react horribly and I like a little variety. It is important to be mindful of your antinutrient intake. As long as you understand it and can blunt the effects, the other plant chemicals can have a hormetic effect in smaller amounts.

    • @KekeeBlack
      @KekeeBlack Před 4 lety +3

      Sarah Hulsey avocados don’t have any antinutrients I know of. It’s a fruit so the plant wants you to transport the seed. Broccoli contains isothiocyanates but if you look into Rhonda Patrick’s research they can have a lot of positive effects. The only risk is low iodine and hypothyroidism so make sure you take proper precautions. In such a small amt I don’t see it being a big deal.

So as long as your not just eating the foods she mentioned solely which no one really does. You can consume those foods in the beneficial way. I’m almost certain you can do the same with the other anti nutrients but that will be remain to be seen

    I used to eat almonds in everything, raw, fried in stir fries, almond milk. I had the worst hip and low back pain, excrutiating pain for years, and had no clue. Then I read somewhere that almonds can cause joint pain. I stopped eating all almonds and my hip pain stopped right away! I couldn't believe it. All that time in pain because of almonds?! In the past when I tried to eat "healthy" it involved lots of salads made of spinach and kale and such. I would make my steamed broccoli and cauliflower the main part of my meal and the meat as a side dish. I always ended up feeling terrible!! When I cut the "healthy" foods from my diet and just ate mostly meat and dairy, I felt so much better. I think I may be one of those who are sensitive to antinutrients. Once I realized this I stopped pushing "healthy" green smoothies on my kids and stopped making them eat heaps of spinach and such at mealtimes. Kids naturally know that bitter stuff isn't good. We now center our meals around the protein and not the plants and mealtimes are much more peaceful and our tummies feel much better.

      Grasslands is good for the soil and a sustainable forage. The constant growing of monocrops such as soybeans and wheat drains the land of its vital nutrients with every gravity bin of beans and kernels removed. All those trace elements being shipped out will never return stripping the land for big profits. The fertilizers put on these monocrops consist of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous only.
      Cattle grazing and the resultant manure on the land is good land management. It is sustainable and the meat is readily bioavailable for nutritional uptake for humans. Monocrops are destroying the land in the long term. It is not sustainable.

Why is it that some medical professionals refuse to do anything but "go by the books"? FInding out about antinutrients is a godsend. I am implementing as many changes as I can immediately. It does freak me out though because as a vegetarian this extremely limits my options. I'm wondering if mycoprotein (like in Quorn brand products) would be a good meat alternative? Fungi is closer to animals than plants, but not sure if our bodies would treat it that way in terms of what we get out of it. I try to eat eggs regularly otherwise

    Hi Kait. I ran across your video while researching oxalates. I have been carnivore-keto for the last 4-5 years with good health and no issues. We moved to a new place and I started gardening again. For the last 4-5 months I have been experiencing odd symptoms that I chalked up as being a new allergy, but I couldn't pin point what the cause was. Like a burning/itching sensation in my mouth, throat, ears, and vaginal area. Also very itchy skin and skin flushing, swollen and tingling hands and feet. I was feeling very acidic in my bowels too. The more I tried to "eat healthier" like more salad and adding in a bunch of alkalizing greens to my morning shakes the worse I felt. About a month ago I started adding rhubarb and beets to my shakes as well. Then 3 weeks ago I started developing tinnitus and heart problems - rapid heart beat and heart palpitations - scared the pants off me! Long story short, when I started researching I ran across oxalates and began piecing things together. I have compiled a list of high-ox foods and will be removing them from my diet until I get the excess flushed from my system. Lesson learned! Going back to my original food plan... at least meat doesn't try to kill me ;)

  • @MarmaladeINFP
    @MarmaladeINFP Před 4 lety +3

    I read Gundry's book. I tried to follow all the complicated and difficult measures to decrease the antinutrients and mitigate their harm. It helped some, but it ended up being too much work for too little gain (if any gain at all). So, after a carnivore diet experiment, I just gave up most plant foods and now feel better. It's simpler being on a mostly animal-based diet. One set of data found that meat was the main food that the fewest people had any bad reactions too with allergies, intolerances, and sensitivities.
    I like to be healthy and I like to keep my life simple. Problem solved with animal-based diet. Too many people make everything so complicated with diets, as if dieting has to be hard and involved and time-consuming. It never occurs to people that such obsession over diets is part of the problem and the main reason people 'fail' on their diets. Actually, it's their diets that fail, not the individual. We aren't sinners of gluttony and sloth who must punish ourselves and mortify our flesh to gain salvation. If dieting doesn't improve and simplify your life, then maybe you're doing something wrong.

      @@danieltrickey9285 - Same here. I'm glad Gundry introduced me to that info. It was part of my learning process. I have nothing against plant foods, but I've learned to respect them. I now use them sparingly, more for flavoring or as 'medicine' than as a staple of my diet.
      I'll pepper my food, eat some easy to digest low-sugar fruits like avocado and olives, occasionally use coconut oil for cooking, and maybe add a small bit of cultured vegetables for the microbes. I also will drink coffee and some tea. Otherwise, 99.9% of my diet is meat, eggs and dairy.

I think it's important to include statements like this or the argument becomes somewhat disingenuous. Because as humans we should be consuming a large range of food, preferably those higher in antioxidants (plants) and avoiding those with high inflammation markers (animals).
