    Jack…I live here in Michigan, have my entire life and NEVER tire of the beauty of our great state. My Hunny and I used to trek to the north every summer but after 3 back surgeries no longer is travel an option. Your vlogs bring back so many wonderful memories for us of our island ventures and I thank you so much for bringing our states beauty to so many who don’t live here in the mitten. Being a master gardener that can barely keep up her own beds, the flora and fauna are only part of my love for you vlogs because I also enjoy when you give us a peek in on the boys as you live your summer life on the island. Always look forward to being enlightened and entertained by your talent and love of all things Mackinac Island!!!:):):)

    What a lovely "cottage" 💕. I might sooner agree with mansion ☺️. At my cottage in Ontario Canada, I have just mowed paths on our front yard through the wildflowers! The idea of keeping it natural for our birds, bugs and butterflies is so important to me. And so much less maintenance. Wish I could send a picture. It is a wash of daisies 🌼🌼🌼🌼

    Really appreciate your advice on letting an area go wild. Living in the foothills of CO, at 7300' elevation, high desert, most people in our area let their home landscape grow wild. Being a MI girl I struggle with wanting at least a little portion looking like the manicured MI lawns I grew up with, but it's difficult to achieve with our dry & steep land. Working to blend in flowers & ground cover that thrive with the natural bent of the land here! Many thanks to the cottage owners for their willingness to allow footage of your beautiful work on their properties!

      Hahaha! From the day I came up to work on Mackinac Island (Forty Years ago now!) that expression Summer Cottage for these beautiful homes always made my husband and I smile. It's just a customary term they use, I don't think anyone in Michigan would dispute you that the first word coming to mind is mansion. I never have tired of riding, walking, or taking a carriage ride past these impressive homes, but it is stellar to see them more personally with Jack Barnwell and crew.

My husband and I live on one acre in South Texas and we have finally let some of our property go natural. You and your brother must have received a pleasant surprise when you cut back all the dense bushes and discovered the second landing/tier of garden scape. LOVE the shots included in the intro! The redevelopment of that area of the cottage is fabulously imagined! In love with the ground covers as per usual. I must say though Jack when I saw you wobble that planter box I saw a potential disaster, especially with children or adults too. Why not consider placing a fence reminiscent of the materials used already for the railings behind (on the cliff side) the planter box to give it more secure stability? Anything would be helpful in that situation.

      @kimberlydianehagen4512 Před 3 lety +1

      Even us locals kind of laugh at using the word cottage. I'm sure we both agree that when thinking of a cottage, it's a quaint little home tucked in the woods. It's just a historical local word adaptations for these "Summer Homes" ... I suppose the very wealthy people who had them first built picked it because literally everyone who could afford a summer cottage up north had one. Since they aren't used year around, maybe they considered them cottages to be less pretentious.
      Some are only used 10 days of the year and of course last year, many went unoccupied.
      Many of the people who own them think of themselves as caretakers of important historical structures. It probably costs more than I make in a year or two just for the upkeep, not counting staff. It's really cool that the woman actually mows her own lawn, eh?
      But it's just a local term, so far as I can tell. I first came up here when I was 22 years old, forty years ago, to work Grand Hotel Security for college. I was the same as you. When my soon-to-be husband said cottage, I thought I'd choke. Ha ha ha.
