    Boox Page is the latest iteration of their relatively new line of 7" eReader devices that were previously called Leaf. I liked the Leaf 2 device, I liked it a lot, but it was underpowered. Page seems to be addressing that issue head-on with the octa-core CPU and 3Gb of RAM, which is a serious upgrade over the Leaf 2. So Let's unbox it and see what the first impressions are like :)

    Great review as always Voja and so nice to be introduced to Indy! Thank you for that! Looking forward to your in depth and testing review. The Page looks very nice but would be difficult for me to justify buying having a Nova 3 and Kindle Oasis (2017 though) and Paperwhite (plus a Note Air 2 and Kindle Scribe).
    The Page has a form factor that looks like the Oasis but the Oasis has a nicer aluminium body (with the gold option) and much better positioned tab buttons). Plus I actually like the Oasis’ extra thickness on the side you are likely to be holding it from plus prefer the Kindle device over the Android e-ink Kindle app.
    BUT ….. it’s great with Boox being able to read via non-Kindle apps - Libby, Scribd and BorrowBox plus Google Books for example and the screen refresh options and programmable buttons options (ignoring the left right screen colour adjust issue you pointed out) are big pluses as is the expandable storage option and that gorgeous magnetic case is very nice looking too.
    Price wise for the UK it’s not too bad either, especially considering you are getting a much more flexible-use device - £290 incl postage for the Page v £308 for the Kindle Oasis bundle (and the Oasis still comes with that micro USB B charging input!).
    It’s widely reported that Amazon are going to announce a new Kindle device in September but no guarantees it’s actually a Kindle. Lots of Oasis lovers ate hoping for a long overdue updated Oasis, may be 8” and may be colour, or perhaps much more likely an 8” Kindle “Scribble”! I guess that would compete against the Nova Air 2 or C (if it marked Amazon’s first move into colour). However if it doesn’t have expandable memory - not a must have once you are at 32 if not (as with my Scribe) 64GB storage - and it won’t allow non-Kindle reading, it would, to my mind, not beat the comparable Boox devices.
    It’ll be interesting to see what choices we have come September!

    I received my Page yesterday. It is my first e-ink device, carefully chosen after learning about e-ink on and off for months (which your videos have been invaluable for).
    I wanted a light versatile device on which I could install any app and that I can also use as an e-reader, and not a dog slow one.
    I played with it a few hours already and here my initial impressions.
    It is really fast, thanks to the 8 core CPU and additional 1GB RAM (compared to the Leaf). Everything is as fast as you'd expect on a modern device.
    The SoC is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, a SoC released in 2019 in that was used (among other devices) for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 (2019) and the Sony Xperia 10 II (2020).
    The 300 ppi screen is awesome and I say that as a general pixel density enthusiast for all displays.
    The magnetic cover is as great as you said in the video.
    I will use this device a lot for reading in a web browser and it is perfect for that using einkbro and its myriad of eink tweaks (also tested Firefox which works fine and is fast).
    I really appreciate the page turn buttons (which are also volume buttons), although I would prefer them to require a bit less force to click.
    I also like that the OS let you customize per app how these buttons operate: as Page up/down keys (if the app support that), as volume keys, or as simulating a scrolling action to simulate whole page scrolling in apps that do not support other means of displaying the next prev/page.
    One of the thing that confused me initially was how to bring the regular Android UI for switching apps (multitasking). On initial setup, I also disabled the navigation bar and enabled gestural navigation. In that setup, there is no gesture configured to display the multitasking screen. For this you have to go into Settings > Gestures and change one of the bottom or side (left or right) swipe gesture to 'Multitasking switcher'. I would have expected this action to be assigned by default to a gesture (for example to one of the redundant 'back' gesture), especially since it is available if you enable the 'navigation bar' as a square icon button.
    The backlight seems to be of excellent quality and it is possible to assign vertical gestures on the side of the screen for adjusting warm and cold lights.
    I agree that the default 15 min idle timeout after which the device will shutdown is ridiculous, especially since it takes a while to boot and that itself must use quite a bit of battery.
    Overall, loving this device and exactly what I wanted and it is so much easier on the eyes than the regular smartphone I was using before.

How is the battery life, how long would it last for a heavy reader, let's say 4-5 hours/day? Is the 7" size confortable for ebook reading, isn't it too small? Are there any new downsides you discovered? Thank you

    Thank you for your impressions of the Boox Page and the Boox Tab Mini C! I am debating between these 2 devices. I will not make much use of the note taking features on the Tab Mini C, but I will be using the device for reading magazines regularly (in addition to eBooks and PDFs.) Because of this, I am intrigued by the colour display of the Tab Mini C, but I am a little worried that the extra weight vs the Page would make it difficult for longer reading sessions. The cost savings of the Page is obviously nice too. What are your thoughts? Do you think the colour display is worth the weight trade-off?

    I would suggest that a spring loaded "rocker" type switch might offer better button tactile feel than two separate buttons. Slide finger up or down from the indented middle to create the page forward or back action. Never have to actually lift finger off the rocker; just slide back to middle of rocker to release up or down switch pressure.

    • @youp1tralala

      The Ultra C uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 (from Wikipedia) while the Boox Page uses the Snapdragon 665 (reported by the cpu-z app on my Page). Both SoCs are nearly identical and have the same Adreno 610 GPU.

    For Onyx to discontinue the Boox Leaf 2 within 9 months of release and without warning is a crappy thing to do. The Leaf 2 was my first Boox device and I bought it less than a month before the Boox Page came out. 😢 I now realise that Onyx have played this dirty trick before and although I am happy with both my Leaf 2 and the Note Air 2 Plus bought used soon after, I'm not sure that I trust Boox enough to buy from them again.

      But what's the problem with discontinuation ? Your device is yours, what does it matter if the company stops selling it? that's a normal thing and depending of the development, some devices are routinely updated to newer variants. Isn't this good instead of a set of devices stying the same for years with now improvements? Yes I understand it often feels bad that you just bought something "new" and only weeks later it's now the "old" device. But that store a psychology aspect than a real problem.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 11 měsíci +3

      Poke 5 unboxing is scheduled for next week, but generally speaking, it's down to money vs size and performance, because Page is faster, and has the auto rotation and the buttons. But Poke 5 is perfectly ok, and cheaper. So it's down to individual needs and possibilities.

    • @marmezz
      @marmezz Před 11 měsíci +1

      I think the main difference is the size. If you want the smallest device that fits in your pocket, then get the Poke. If it can be a little bigger then Page. I have a Poke 5 myself, and I wish it was as fast as Page, but I always carry it in my pocket and it can't be bigger.

    • @joelsvision

      @@marmezz ok thank you! I just received the Poke 5 and am getting used to it. The Kindle is so simple, this has a few more clicks to get to what you want. AND it is slower unless I want ghosting. But I think I have it where I want it now. And yes I do love the size!

  • @SuperMosesfly
    @SuperMosesfly Před 11 měsíci

    I really think they should put more thoughts on performance/battery life tbh.. One of the merit of an e-ink reader was that the battery life lasts weeks of usage, but with the recent ones, even at twice the battery capacity, sometimes it doesn't even last 2 days, like my poke 3 for example.... I actually sold it and kept my super old c67ml carta 2+ cos I'd rather suffer the slow dual-core cpu than to having worrying about my device needing a charge..

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 11 měsíci +1

      My Poke 2 still holds charge for well over 100hr of reading time and easily 4 weeks of standby time, so you may want to try to disable your wifi, as it might be triggering the device into constant wifi scanning, which will drain the battery more quickly on any device.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 10 měsíci

      18:02 Where? All I can see is Cold Light or Warm Light intensity controls, but separated? What I am talking about is Front Light Intensity+/- and the Front Light Color Balance +/- that are not present here, and as such it doesn't allow you to have the overall front light intensity level control on one slider while maintaining the desired color balance with the other side slider, which is the way Kindle, Kobo and other industry leading eReaders function.
      If you are referring to the Dark Color Enhancement and the Light Color Filter, those have nothing to do with the Front Light, those are E-Ink center controls that allow you to fine tune the contrast.
      So I'm confused where did you see the options I am talking about?

    • @MichaelColantoni
      @MichaelColantoni Před 10 měsíci

      @@MyDeepGuide I am a little confused about the difference between Cold Light intensity and Front Light intensity. I find using Cold Light intensity to increase brightness quite efficient. I may have to readjust Warmth but it works. So I have Cold Light on the left and Warm Light on the right. This is my first Boox so the subtleties escape me. I defer to your expert judgement. I'm happy with it. It is far more flexible than my Kobo Elipsa but I do miss using a pen. I apologise if I misunderstood. Thanks for your ongoing efforts.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Nothing to apologize for :) Device's front light has 2 main controls, light color (temperature, cold is the blue light, warm is the orangish tint light) and the intensity. Normally, what you should have as controls is a blend between the cold and warm light, to balance them to your liking, and a separate intensity of the overall light. That way you can adjust the color balance the way you like it, and adjust the intensity of the light, while maintaining that color balance. This is what industry leading eReaders utilize, such as Kindle and Kobo, however, this is not easily, or in some cases at all, possible on majority of Boox devices ( some have received the updated front light control which works as I describe it, majority doesn't have it. Yet another messy inconsistency).
      What Boox has is the lazy approach, and that is, separate intensity control for the cold (blue) light and separate intensity control of the warm (orange-ish) light. This is wrong and incomplete, because it doesn't allow the user to simply adjust the brightness of the light, without messing up the color balance they've setup. I hope that helps clear it up a bit :)

      There is so much conflicting information regarding that matter that I no longer follow it. Last I remember was that it turned out that people have been misinterpreting GPLv2 requirements, as in, that it is "good practice" to publicly release source code modifications, but it is not a requirement. What is a requirement is that if someone request this information from them, that they need to provide it.
      The second aspect, which was also conflicting was wether or not Boox has modified the kernel at all in any way. If not, then they are not bound by anyone to reveal anything.
      So honestly, I don't know, but what I do know, from the research that I did back last year is that it's not nearly as simple of a matter as some people are making it seem to be, and legal and licencing experts who understand these matters far better than you, me, and 99.9% of really loud people online should clarify this, so that we (non-experts) finally can know once and for all what is the reality of this matter is.

    I own both the Leaf 2 and the Page. I really liked the Leaf 2 but disliked the Boox book management firmware which I dislike on all Boox devices. They need to talk to Kobo about book management and Kobo needs to talk to Boox about book syncing. I really like the Page and was not expecting the positive differences I found between the Leaf 2 and the Page. I definitely like the Page better and feel it is worth the money.
    I did have a problem with getting the SD tray to pop out of the Page. I contacted Boox about the problem and all they did was send me videos of their emps getting the tray to pop out as if I was a moron. The videos included both the Leaf 2 and the Page. I don't think they realized that. I looked at the expressions of the emps in the videos and saw that they had a harder time getting the tray to pop out on the Page. After days of emails and having acute frustration with Boox, I took a full box of altoids and pounded the hell out of the tool while it was in the hole. Then the tray popped out just fine. I told Boox they needed to change their instructions or look into QA. So note that the Page may require more upper body or hand/wrist strength to install the SD card. Keep your altoids handy.

      Just tried my Page, SD tray pops out very easily using in-box pin, maybe it was an odd sample

    Why so stingy with Ram. Really upsetting. No need to go from 4GB to 3GB just to 'stay' below the ultra C, which btw should have deserved 6GB.

      More is always better but I'd say 3GB is adequate for most people and a huge step up from 2GB which is clearly not enough.

      They don't customize the boards and SoC's. They just buy a bulk and then use it, and obviously, they are trying to maximize profit, otherwise, 4Gb would have given it a nice margin of comfort. That being said, 3Gb seems to be enough for most tasks that one would expect to use this device for.

    why don't you teach how those settings got there? all you do is just touch here and there, it's really annoying

      Have you tried reading the user manual? I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to find most on the information you are looking for in there.
