I will forever remember the time I didn’t negotiate. I got an internal promotion in December 2019. HR offered me close to the midpoint, well above what I was making already, but less than what I thought I was worth. HR sold me on its such a big jump and everything they accounted for. January 2020 they adjusted the salary range for the position to higher figures. I will always negotiate from now on.. Also I got the promotion by binge watching your videos and asking the hard question at the end of the interview. I love your content!

The last tip is golden. Thank you for letting people know it is good to walk away. Companies will take advantage of you to the bone because you are replaceable. But know that you have a lot of good things to offer somewhere else :)

Be weary of them telling you they will start you at X salary & re-evaluate you after X number of months. Business needs change frequently. You have no idea where that company will be financially after that time period. I fell for this & was moved off a project less than a year at the company because the funding got reduced. They retained me & did eventually give me that raise, but it was with a completely different manager on a completely different project and it was 2 years later, not X months later.
Have some flexibility, but don't take less off some "promise" that can very easily be broken.
    Great advice as always!

Omg after 3 interviews and assessment tests, just got a job offer letter from a tech company here in NYC last Monday and I counter-offered for 10%... I was so nervous after she told me mmm not sure bit I'll ask and i’ll get back to you at the end of the week. I thought oh man I think I blew it! They're gonna rescind and that's it. I called and left a VM last Thursday to follow through, recruiter didn't replied. I couldn't sleep and so much anxiety. Next day Friday ( today) I called again around 11:30am. no answer and I left a voicemail. I was about to give up when the phone rang and voila! She apologized cuz of so many meetings! Whew! I got the job plus the offer I wanted. I was so happy and ecstatic! So People, negotiating your salary once u get an offer letter really works! Trust me!

Hi Cass. I want to add one more thing to consider. If you are not able to get the target salary you want off the bat, ask them their policy for reviews and raises. Some companies are super rigid about when & how much but this is the time to know that. I negotiated to have a 6 month review and at that time my boss went to bat to get me another 10% in the off cycle. This made a huge difference in the long run because I got it early on so all subsequent increases were based on an already higher amount. Just a thought. Love ya!

Hi Cassandra! I find your videos quite invaluable and turn to them often. So thank you! I was wondering what expectations should be (as far as salaries are concerned) when moving from a city with a relatively high COL to a relatively moderate COL? should one expect to automatically take a pay cut even if the new job would be a promotion or entail more responsibility? Thank you!

Hey Cass -- I have my 1 year anniversary at work coming up in January and by then, I will have graduated with my bachelors. I was going to ask my CEO and my SVP of Human Resources (they're in charge of pay rate) to sit down so I could go over my goals for 2021 with them, give them good news (about obtaining my bachelors and then (hopefully) grad school acceptance) and then revisit my compensation package.
I have received excellent marks on all of my quarterly eval.
Will have a new degree under my belt with another one beginning.
I also did an internship with my company (while also working there) for academic credit where I took on more job responsibility. This will end mid december, but I gained some useful skills.
My company pays 15-17 an hour for my job position (Im at 15/hourly). Other companies are between 16-25 with most being 18+. I also have a friend who works as a recruiter in the field offering me 18 an hour.
I don't wanna leave my job just yet, but I want my company to give me a raise. How should I go about this?

I have successfully negotiated more vacation days with my last position I had. When they gave me the job offer they tried to lowball me salary wise. Dispite being unemployeed at the time, I was able to get them give me $20k more, and to accrue vacation at the same rate as an employee with 5yrs with the company. I had previously read that vacation is the easiest thing to negotiate and it worked for me. I told them, I am not an entry level person, I have XXyrs experience, and my lwork life balance is accustomed to a certain amount of time off to do what we do. While I asked for more vacation time they countered with a lower number that I accepred. This was my first time negotiating and it worked out generally well for me.
Would it be odd to negotiate a severence package should you be found not a fit for the company, or the company only uses you to get through some milestone and then throws you away?

Hi, I’ve binge-watched some of your videos as I’m currently going through a recruitment process and they were very helpful in preparing for all the interviews. However, I was wondering if you had and tips on how to deal with a tricky situation I’m in.
Tomorrow I’m interviewing with a company that I really like for their culture and the ability I’d have to take initiative and see projects through on my own. However, their salary bracket is 6-7.5K/month (it’s customary for that industry in my country to provide the bracket upfront), meanwhile mine is 8-10K. The discrepancy is mostly caused by me working for a larger company in a market-competitive city, while the job is for a smaller company in a smaller town. I know that based on their market research their bracket is probably reasonable (and most likely what they paid the person previously in this role), but I also know I can get offers within my bracket easily, because I already got them (though from companies that I’m not really excited about).
The thing is, 7.5K is my “walkaway number” (i.e. I’d take that, but not a cent less), but I’d obviously prefer to earn more. I’m afraid if they ask me what I’d like to make and I tell them it’s outside of their bracket, they’ll stop considering me for the position altogether and won’t even negotiate. At the same time, I don’t want to tell them upfront “my bracket is this, but I’m willing to go lower.” Do you have any advice how I should play it out to both let them know what my expectations are and that I’m open to negotiation?

Is it advisable to negotiate the salary when it is a lateral transfer and one knows the top of the salary range for the pay grade? Position is being eliminated and there is a 3 months of severance pay offered. The annual difference between current pay and top pay range is about 1/6 of the severance pay. I guess I named a decent number for the current position as it is only 4% lower that the top of the range.

My offer was rescinded. They offered very low and I probably offered too high (although I was in line with similarly sized organizations). I expected then to counter-offer so I would know if they were even in the ballpark. But they took their time to get back to me, presumably to offer the position to another candidate. When they did respond, they held firm on their original number and wished me luck. Not sure what I learned from this experience.

Would a company just automatically consider another candidate and do not wait for your decision when you ask for time to consider for the offer? That is something that I fear, I dont wanna lose the opportunity from play hard to get. I am the one that needs the job and like you said they probably have 100 people waiting for that position. Would you please give me some advise? Thank you.

When negotiating for vacation time or perks do you include them with your 1st negotiation? Example: asking for 10% more with 1 week vacation or should you ask for 10% and if they say 5% then ask to include more vacation time? Which scenario is best? Thx

Cassandra, are you saying that you SHOULDN'T try to negotiate PTO/sick days, or just that it's not something you're familiar with? Because for me personally, I could care less about the salary, but PTO is a huge thing for me. I was planning on negotiating for more PTO in a final interview I have coming up, but now I'm second guessing that.

Hi Cassandra, I stumbled upon your videos 2 days back when preparing for my interview and I just loved your tips and your expressions. You gave the exact reasons why people look for job and your expressions just made me laugh so much. I watched your videos and I asked the hard question and I was offered the job today. Yipee!! but (yes there is a but) they offered me a salary below my current salary and I said I need to time to think and the hiring manager said, u will have to reply in next few hours, coz if u don't take it, we will offer the job to someone else. I sent an email asking for a $XXXX amount and they replied "Good luck with your job search". They never came back with a counter offer. What would you say to this?

Until 3 months ago, I believed in always trying to negotiate. An offer was extend...before I got the email, I found the same position listed at another recruiter, called verified the salary being offered at a higher rate than offered directly with the company. I was also over qualified for the position with more than twice the amount of experience. I countered at the higher salary (10%) which was still lower than current pay. The offer was immediately rescinded with no discussion. I am now rethinking my philosophy of "Ask, all they can do is say 'no'".

Ok Question, I am interviewing with a company and gave 3 rounds and waiting for one more big round which is for 5 hours. In the first round with HR, she asked my expected salary and I told her in a range of 90-95k, then she responded that its higher and they can offer be 85 base and upto 95 in total. I know its an Ok deal, but I am thinking to push them to 90 base and 95-100 total. Is this a good time to negotiate now before the final round, as i dont want to invest 5 hours in final round and then stuck in the negotiation part. Is this ok to negotiate in between the rounds? If yes, how can we do that via email without offending them?? Thanks in Advance

Great advice although I feel your eyeroll black and white bit on unions was a bit much tbh....
Unions have been essential in negotiating industry pay for as long as they've existed.
If you think union dues take a lot you should check out the pay disparity in between union states with Right to Work (for less) laws....
As onerous as it may seem on paper, you can be pretty certain you'd be making a lot less in your role without a union's collective bargaining, and/or any higher pay could be a lot more easily eroded in budget cuts.
My mom experienced this first hand working as a social worker for over 20 years, all it took was one change of management for her whole team to lose a huge portion of their benefits package and a lot more hour. Thankfully by unionizing they've been able to recover a lot and maintain a much more reasonable caseload so they can effectively do their job.
