The job search is so exhaustive these days, with so much competition, it is hard to keep the rules straight in an interview.

This video hits the nail on the head! I wish I had watched this when I was transitioning from teaching. It's easy to make these mistakes, but being aware of them can save a lot of time and frustration. Well done!

We live in a failed state when you have to pretend you don’t need a job to survive as the reason why you “want” a job. I “want” a job because I “want” to survive. That simple reality is the basis of the workforce in America. People don’t seek work because they want to but because they need to. I get what you’re saying about not bringing that up in the interview itself, but at a certain point this grave contradiction is going to need to be openly acknowledged. Everyone wondering why this country is failing

One of our job applicants answered the question, “Why do you want to work at our company?”, with “Man’s gotta to eat.” It made me laugh and I loved their honesty… they turned out to be a great hire.

Well, in as much as we want that to be true, we must be logical and realistic in our approach by understanding that we are owed nothing by businesses.
Their provision of an opportunity for success in an individual's life is enough positive initiative on their part. The rest of the work, which are our personal goals, are solely our responsibility to achieve.

Completely agree about the name drop...it can also go in a way where that name isn't well received.

Cass Thompson Career Advice - excellent video.
I was one of the people that may have commented 5 years ago regarding never asking about salary. Also, in Silicon Valley (I'm not there any more) almost no company would have you in without giving you a salary range and in fact, they often say at interviews "you haven't asked about salary which makes me a little nervous." They want to know bluntly and they want to know right away. A bit like you said about the date where one wants childern, another does not. Finally, if you're a 1099 contractor you 'must' be told what you pay is. I just loved the way you suggested asking about pay by the way.
The other point you may have received some push back on is bashing employers. Again, in California (I'm not there any more) the hiring companies were curious! The interviewers would ask"what boss or colleague challenges did you face and what did you do about them?" I said (sales job) "I had a boss who at the end of every quarter said to include sales we MIGHT close to make the quarterly bottom line look better. I said I did what he said, but wasn't thrilled with it." The interviewer said, "we're well aware that this terrible practice goes on, and I'm with you. By the way, it's not allowed here." My reply helped me.
The real skill is reading the room, imo. Every company has a different culture and every interviewer is different. Different cultures and interviewers require different, tailored answers. I don't think there's any training that can really prepare you for this, but I could be wrong. It's just a skill you have or you don't.
    Great video!

One dumb thing I did during an interview. When an interviewer hinted that I didn't have a lot of experience in an area I mentioned that I was also on my 2nd interview with a competitor company. My thought was it showed that my skills were valued by a similar company, but looking back it looked like bragging. I didn't get either job BTW.

Yeah or like a threat to them. Its so hard. This is a great example of thinkign you're doing the right thing, but the understanding can be totally misconstrued. Thank you for sharing. It's something to learn from

I'd be so embarrassed if someone name dropped me in an interview. I might suggest applying but never refer them because I've seen other people do that and it ended terribly!

What if you've been actively participating in the interview and asking your questions along the way, do you still need to have extra questions and/or can you refer back to the fact that you've already asked them?

  • @cindyaldrich888

I have a question on the topic of ageism. We all know it exists and there are plenty of suggested resume formats to minimize it. There is something that I think gives away "seasoned" applicants that I haven't see addressed and that is the applicants name. Women's names such as Donna, Mary, Susan, Cindy, Karen, Barbara, etc., identify the applicant as a child of the late 50's at best. Would it be too strange to use your middle name on the application or resume if it's less identifying, such as Anne, Elizabeth, etc. Then if an interview actually occurs you could identify the name you "go by" as your actual first name. I really don't care for being devious but it is so incredibly frustrating being discarded due to your age. Please let me know your thoughts. I know this is a bizarre concept but we need to fight back somehow! Thank you.

Okay, I hadn't thought about this before and I'll be very honest that I don't have a straight answer for you, but this is really interesting to think about! I won't say you HAVE to, but you could do First initial , middle name if you think it would help

I just had my 2nd interview (I cruised the 1st one with the recruiter thanks to your amazing tips!) with the person who would be my boss. He liked my work experience and my answers but I don´t know if he liked me.. He said that it was a pleasure to meet me and that I should contact the recruiter in case I had more questions or if I got anxious with the days passing by.. do you think I failed?

It could be a LOT of reasons why they haven't called. One being life got busy. I actually have very rarely had a company respond when they said they would. Keep your hope up!
