Vintage German solid-state tape echo and spring reverb unit from the 70's
I found this unit on Leboncoin.fr (French countrywide Craigslist) in April 2020. It was sold "as is" and the seller - a retired musician - said he had no idea if it worked with no equipment to test it. It has been sitting in a closet for years, seller said he had no equipment to test it.
When I received it, it lighted up correctly, tape's motor was running but no sound. I gave it to Pi Amp for a full restoration in September 2020.
Restoration
Fully cleaned : circuit, echo mechanism and chassis. Circuit traced and debugged: a few components were changed, for ex. an OP-amp was changed in the spring reverb circuit. Tape changed. Fully recapped, all the electrolytes were changed. The heads were cleaned and demagnetized. Modified to work at 240V.
Mods
Added 1 jack input on each channel instead of 1 of the 2 DIN plugs (originally 2 per channel)
Added a jack output. The DIN outputs are still there, including the SEND/RET one that is very handy to get the WET signal only.
Tech's opinion :
«It's really a different beast than the 62 and 65 tube version. Of course it's solid state. So there's more bandwidth, you can dial the speed, there's a spring reverb. You can get more clean repeats. But the 62 and 65 have multi echo (3 heads), that warm tube sound and break up nicely. So you need both !»
