  • Copped a Microshift Sword 1x group from Two Hoosiers Cyclery in Ogden UT who seemed to be one of the only online retailers stocking them. Figured since there might be some curiosity about the group I'd do a video on it.

    The derailleur alignment guage is really only made for integrated hangers on steel bikes. Although the bombora is steel that hanger isn't, those are made to bend and break before your frame does. It is best replaced when damaged. I always buy 2 when i damage one so i have a backup as some can be harder to find than others.

      smart. i bought two since bending this one. gonna carry a spare on rides since theyre easy to swap out.

    Thanks very much for your thoughts on the oddities & niceties of Sword components. It's hard to find much about it so far. Anyway, greetings from the 510.

    I find that it's not too hard to do a "roadside D-hanger alignment". I find the gear that makes the derailleur most vertical, and that gives a good idea of the alignment up/down, and then put it in the smallest gear so the derailleur goes horizontal to see the alignment front/back. Also a long 5mm hex key in the derailleur mounting bolt gives a good reference compared to the hub, and when you're aligning it the long hex key is also used as a handle, so that you're not putting all the force on the lower parts of the derailleur. Not a 100% repair but it can get it nice and straight again until you replace the hanger.

    When it comes back in stock you could check out the UNO bar end shifter from Soma 🤷🏽‍♂️. That way you can rock with bent hangers, use any levers, any derailleur and any cassette you want(while also being able to get on the brakes easy peasy. Like the wind

      Dang that's a sick option too. Microshift also makes a bar end shifter for 12spd MTB rear derailers and you can toggle between friction and index. and it's $55 instead of $150. i thought about going that route but really prefer a modern shifter (brifter). bent hanger is not that big of a deal.

    note the sword crankset, wolftooth 36t chainring will not fit on it but the crank arms are drilled for shimano grx replacement rings, and that is if you get the crankset.

      thanks for adding this. i think some people have filed the tabs the tabs but that's obviously not ideal.

    How did you find the throw on the shift levers? Another review commented how they felt kind of spongy because you had to move the lever so far for the shift to engage. I wonder if the bent derailleur hanger would affect that though.

      @callinginsickmagazine  Před 2 měsíci +3

      good question and i agree the lower lever for downshifts is spongy or mushy. at the 15:37 mark i inserted some text to explain how the downshift sensation is faint or vague which is also not great. in the middle of a mushy lever throw you may or may not register a "click" letting you know there was actually a shift. it's one of the small cons of the group but on the other hand not really that big of a deal, especially considering the price.

    Glad I’m not alone with rusty rear derailleur hanger bolts. Living near the coast in CA has its downsides 😂

      I apologise for my English. I wanted to say when you can test, there is a 10s cassette from Sunrace with Shimano scaling.
      Or old cassette 11s, scaling dont work, but only of sword up to 51t.
      Thanks 🤘🏻🎸

    Hi , was thinking about getting a Bombora . I’m 5’7 so I’m somewhere between a small or medium . I was leaning towards the small . Have any thoughts on if I should size up or not ? Thanks for all the previous vids :) .

    • @withfilm
      @withfilm Před 2 měsíci

      I’m 5’6 and the small fits great. Remember the TT is somewhere around 54cm.

      @callinginsickmagazine  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I think you should go with the medium. They recommend sizing up. I'm 5' 9" and ride the large/58cm.

      to me the appeal of Sword is the shifters since Sram and Shimano are moving everything to hydraulic and electronic.
