First Look: Otso Warakin Gravel Adventure Bike
QUICK CORRECTION: Wolftooth makes a conversion kit for a singlespeed chain tensioner so that option is alive and well with this bike, and in a much prettier package than a conventional sliding dropout (which I don't like). This is a much better looking option if you wanna run this bike single speed. They also have an insert for the tuning chip that allows you to run the axle in the middle position for a 430mm chainstay. The options with the standard Tuning Chip create either 420 or 440mm effective chainstay lengths. I will elaborate on all of these options in a future video.
Otso Cycles lent me their new Warakin Steel bike to review. Here is a first look at the bike in which I share initial impressions and what drew me to the bike. I am gonna do a formal review in maybe one or two videos to follow. I'll also do a written review in an upcoming issue of Calling in Sick Magazine. Thank you Otso Cycles!!!

      i wouldn't sweat it too much. these are hed ardennes wheels, tektro r539 brakes, and panaracer gravelking slick tires. IMO the brake is the biggest consideration for clearance with a 38. these tektro brakes are awesome and inexpensive.

    Very cool bike! I am thinking about turning an old 29er into a monster gravel bike and have been looking at the Sword group. Ugly, yet functional works for me. Thanks for your review. BTW, did you consider using a piece of black housing under the tape, inserting an inline barrel adjuster just below the bars, and running your green housing to the rear derailleur?

    I think bike review vids get boring really quickly. Your ride edits are soooo much fun that I'd rather see you put your energy into creating more of that content than using it up reviewing bikes that all too often are splitting hairs in their differences.

    Hard to choose between the Green and Orange frames, they both look so sick. I think that green will really come to life with different parts like a more interesting stem, crank arms, saddle and seatpost, etc. It already started to look really good with your wheels and some bags. Excited for more content on this thing!

    Worked at a shop when the Warakin was only available in stainless and Ti - built a Ti one single speed as a rich person’s rainy day bike, unbelievably light. Otso, particularly during the bike boom, was one of the most consistently available and friendly brands to deal with. Had the pleasure of riding all their models at that time (Waheela, Warakin, Fenrir, and Voytek). All super versatile and super fun, even for a track bike only philistine like me.

  • @bikenejad
    @bikenejad Před 23 dny

    I'm hyped that you got sent a bike to review, hopefully this leads to more opportunities like that! It's cool that these flip chips adjust the angles as well as the chainstay length, but my experience with flip chips are that I just set them in whatever mode makes the bike rip harder on descents, and never touch them again. Kinda pointless if you ask me, but I'll concede that it's probably a good way for a smaller brand to be able to sell the same frame to different types of customers, or folks who want to experiment. It's also worth noting that they make a slider conversion for these dropouts for SS or IGH use.

    • @callinginsickmagazine

    It looks like a nice frame, but it's a little too pricey. The value preposition just isn't there. The stainless steel finish was what really made it stand out, unfortunately the painted version makes it get lost in a very crowded market. Love your stuff and keep it coming.

    • @callinginsickmagazine
      @callinginsickmagazine Před 23 dny

      thanks, glad you like the stuff! which bike(s) would you get in this category before the Warakin? I have been mentally categorizing this bike with the likes of Crust Bombora (carbon fork variants), Crust Evasion Lite, Ritchey Outback, etc. all of which are hundreds of dollars more expensive than the Warakin, or exactly $100 more in the case of the Evasion Lite. $1,400 seems "not bad" for a bike like this (steel frame, 2x-3x butted tubing, carbon fork, made in Taiwan, etc).

    • @normanchan2001
      @normanchan2001 Před 23 dny

      @@callinginsickmagazine I just bought a Rune Rufus Stone for $1600 delivered. I considered the Brother Cycles Mehteh or the Curve Kevin of Steel which is about the same cost as the painted version Warakin delivered. The stainless steel was the only one I would consider and that one cost $2300, the painted version just doesn't pop. My mistake, I didn't realize the cost of the painted version was way less. But in terms of gravel/ATB framesets, I just feel there are more attractive options for about the same cost. I would love to see a framesets that had awesome paint schemes like the old Kleins from the 90's. Now those were some good looking bikes.
