  • A Royal that Grant admired greatly but never met. Diana Princess of Wales would have turned 60 this July. Grant vowed one to day to help look after her sons when he was 17 years old having learned that she had been killed in a car accident in 1997. Within 7 years Grant became their Butler.

She was such a giving person even if she wasn't a princess I am sure. I don't think the statue of her does her justice in her face. She will be forever missed in the USA as well. May she rest in peace. God bless the UK as well.

Thank you for this nice tribute to Diana. I am a Chicagoan, 3 years older than Diana, and remember getting up in the dark to watch the royal wedding thinking it was such a fairy tale. My first son was born one month before William and when William was born I clipped the photo out of the newspaper from when they left the hospital and I put it into my son's baby book with the caption, "Another prince has been born into the world!" When Diana died it was actually that son who told me about it and turned the tv on. I was glued to the television for days, it was all so terribly sad and unbelievable.
It turns out William now reminds me a lot of my son in his appearance, mannerisms and even his thoughtful nature.

@@benajminpadilla6360 not everyone feels as you do it was a terrible thing that she died the way she did but she was over reported on.
Maybe not her fault but constantly seeing and hearing about what she did wore /said /did the money that was spent on clothes holidays and building her up to be some sort of Saint was just too much.
The north of England was suffering for massive job cuts, industries closing down, poor social care, children being raped by gangs (and nobody cared) .
And it the midst of this the constant news of the excesses of the royals with their warm clothes watertight shoes money and privilege was often like a punch the face.
As I said though it’s sad she died.

When I heard it on TV, I thought: "Noooooooo! It CANNOT be possible! What are they doing, creating news like these???Why are they doing this????" It was so incomprehensible, my brain just could NOT process what I was hearing! At first, I was relieved, as they were saying she had a broken arm, but as the reports got more somber, my heart just sank! I couldn't stop thinking of her boys! To this day, a part of me still cannot believe the world lost her. I'm American, but have huge respect for the Queen, the British Royal Family, and deeply admired Diana. I think William carries on her legacy with honor and dignity ,and Kate is the perfect spouse, supporting him in his work, and doing hers so respectably! Wherever she is, I'm sure Diana is very proud of both of them.

I had about an hour before my flight, but was concerned that by the time I tracked her down, got caught up in the crowd, and saw her, I'd miss my connection. Because the Spencers grab so much attention not much is talked about Diana's Maternal/Mother's Family which is the Baron Fermoy - 4th Baron Fermoy was her Grandfather, the 5th Baron Fermoy was her uncle and he attended her 1981 wedding so I guess that means the present 6th Baron Fermoy was her first cousin; his daughters are Arabella and Eliza. Oh well my point was that William and Harry do have a large living family aside from their Father's side/The Royal Family.

As usual Grant, you have given a lovely insight into the royal family, Diana was indeed a wonderful and caring person and I'm pleased you didn't go into the alternative side of her which, for those ' in the know' was painful to witness. Prince William has a wholesome view of his mother and keeps her memory alive for his wife and children. Both the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were very fond of Diana but we're realistic in their outlook for their sons failing marriage. The majority of people blame prince Charles but, it takes two to make a marriage and two to break it. Only now are the stories being aired about the many affairs that Diana had before Charles reunited with Camilla. This does not detract from all the good that Diana did with her charity work or the kindness she showed friends. Her stepmother Raine Spencer was a lovely person but, I can see that in Diana's eyes it was Diana who wanted her father's full attention and not to share this with another woman. I often wonder if it was post natal depression that turned Diana's attitude towards life. Sadly we will never know. Thank you again Grant and take care.

Thank you for your heartfelt remarks. As I look back on her life, it was clear that she, a teenager, was quickly swept into a riptide that she had neither the experience nor ability to control. Neither family had the intestinal fortitude to put a stop to this terrible match. Charles, a much older man and still involved with Camilla, certainly knew better but wouldn't do the honorable thing and end it. From being swept into an opulent life in the relentless public eye, to being swept into a limousine by Dodi Fayed, driven by a drunk driver in a Paris tunnel, and finally carried out of Westminster to her family home, I doubt that Diana could have stopped it herself. One bad decision led to the next until there were no more to make. This is a monumental tragedy. He brief life is the stuff of tragic opera.
Her charm and genuine love for others in need will be remembered for decades. May her children find peace in her memory.

Externally strong, supportive, dignified, empathetic and kind and knows when to be distant and when to bring together.

She was a very troubled, mixed-up teenager, far too young to be marrying a man nearly 13 years older than her with his own baggage. She lacked the emotional strength or insight for marriage to ANYONE, let alone someone who would be bound to expose her to press attention and all that entailed. The reaction of the public, with its relentless hysteria and demand for "coverage" at any price, added an extra layer of stress to a woman unable to cope with it.
It is ironic to note the similarities between Diana and Meghan: both economical with the truth about sharing interests with their future husband (Diana claimed to enjoy Scotland and country pursuits, Meghan to be prepared for royal duties, the military), both with a warped symbiotic relationship with the media in that they expressed a desire for privacy while using media to push "their truth" (Morton book, friendship with Richard Kay in Diana's case, Scobie book, Oprah interview in Meghan's): in effect Harry, already carrying a trunkload of emotional baggage from his childhood, has married a Mark II version of his mother. And in the current case it is likely to end in tears, recrimination and 2 unhappy children. Deja-vu in spades.
