  • Hey guys! I figured I'd start the new year with semi-automated collection, especially since that seems to be on the decline here in San Jose. Unfortunately this is the only footage I have left of the single Lodal EVO that CWS ran before it was retired.
This was the only Lodal that CWS inherited from NorCal Waste Systems when they lost the major San Jose contract back in 2007. I believe there were at least a couple more but they've all been sent to other Recology yards locally and out of state. This truck used to be equipped with comb tippers (hence the empty tipper mounts) to accommodate the 35 gallon Ottos when it was still picking up garbage & recycling. At some point after CWS inherited the truck, both of the comb tippers were removed and they were never replaced with a standard tipper. Not sure why that was, considering judging by the impact marks on the box frame from the cart wheels, regular US-style carts were still being tipped on those comb tippers.
There were attempts over the years to document this particular truck, however none ever came to fruition. lt wasn't until 2020 that myself and a couple of other filmers managed to find it. The truck was well past its prime time by then but it was cool nonetheless to finally be able to film it.
I felt like it was time to capture this truck again in full 4K, knowing that eventually this truck would be replaced due to its age and also most likely being out of emission standards. I attempted this a couple of years ago, though I had caught it right at the end of its' route. I found a date to be able to head back to the downtown one way streets, and was able to capture one last full length video of this truck. It was good that I filmed it when I did too, this truck was permanently downed no more than a month afterwards due to some sort of non-feasible repair.
Lodal as a manufacturer shut down production in June of 2021, which means that there will be no cloned replacement for this truck. It's really a shame too. They were virtually indestructible, packed like crazy for their size, and had a MASSIVE hopper for a manual side loader. Even with this truck being configured as a split body truck, completely filled 95 gallon carts were often emptied in one go without having to shake the tipper or sit there and wait for the blade to cycle. I can imagine without the divider, the hopper capacity would be much greater. The stand up drive on the left hand side is also greatly beneficial compared with having to contend with climbing in and out of a normal sit-down design. Currently a Peterbilt 320 McNeilus M/A with a tipper on the left hand side has taken the Lodal's place on this route, which is also soon to be replaced by a CNG version mounted on a Peterbilt 520.
Special thank you to Jose Ortiz for allowing me to film!
    Enjoy the video!

Neat to see the red Norcal paint bleeding through on the wheels. Looks like the majority of carts on this route are heavily contaminated, I'd be curious if the city's larger black cart pilot program would change that at all. Impressive truck and operator all around, nice work!
