Sometimes it's easy to tell by look at the faster moving planet and seeing if it's past the degree of the exact aspect or before it. Other times the speeds of the planets are similar so you might have to check with a software. I think on astro dot com they have a grid that you can reference. It's usually represented by an A or an S for applying and separating, respectively. Thanks!
