Stunning. Love the kind of high tech / alien colouration of the piece, contrasts really well with the primitive ruins around it. And I think it looks brilliant inserted into the ruins, great fit.
Be careful with the balsa foam, make sure your hands are clean. If it happens to get in your eyes it WILL scratch them. I used it for some early prototypes for custom base inserts. The next step up from the more common foam boards we use is moving to HDU. High Density Urethane foam boards are a tighter cell, but they are very costly; not something to just mess around with.
I have something as a base for it. Just going to use what I hae on hand. Which is styrene. No idea how I will do the the center. I might leave it blank
Actually, I thought about the glowing 'runes' and thought it would be nice to have them 'off' as well, but really couldn't think of a way to do it. *shrug* Maybe down the road with some sort of filter..
***** yeah I could see that. would be pretty awesome to pull off. Perhaps with a larger transparency with a 2 tone colour scheme. There's gotta be a way! :)
Ok I am going to forgo my complaint at Google for the moment.... Regarding your video.... Envious... Jealous... Utterly fantastic On a note the tower does look way too small for the gate, but that could be easily explained as the tower being built around the gate much later then the original construction of the gate itself... I would love to see more about this new material balsa foam. Lastly with the insert I would have considered having the portal having a metallic ridge that filled in the top to both fill in the gap and add to inserting and removing from the gate; however, I do hate making this criticism being that I am having a heart attack right now as I am totally awe stuck by your incredible artistic ability.
Your comments are well received. :) I did envision the tower built around the gate, but still, the comparison scale was a bit off. Always learning... Someone else mentioned a 'cap' for the slot. Next time for sure. :)
That looks outstanding, and looks very close the the one I made some years back, apart from the colour's and ruins, just shows when you make some thing for the first time you go to what you know. Did you have problems with cutting the balsa foam as I always have problems cutting it?
I found cutting it with a razor saw fairly effective but getting a clean angle is pretty tough. Probably would be best cut on a band saw for major shaping. After that however, its great to shape by scraping away material.
is it possibly to commision you to make another one of these Stargates? I would love to have one for my wargaming if not just because im a stargate fan
Thank you for your interest. :) Right now I am not accepting project proposals. It will be a while before I can begin to line up new work. I'm booked for quite a while.
Fair enough. When I was building it, I was more focused on the scale for miniatures rather than the scale of the building. Always a learning experience. :)
Our whole family's huge SG fans, this is a great piece! I love the removable portal disc.
Thanks. :)

Wow! That's fantastic Mike. Hope you made a mold of the Stargate halves. I love the portal effect. Very well done.
No mold. Next one (if there is one) will likely be better? :)

I agree with the irritant quality of it. And it produces a lot of dust. :) Still, a pretty unique and versatile material.
Looks excellent, the colour choices are wonderful. the highlighting is spot on
Thanks. :)
This looks great, it is a really cool build. Keep up the good work!
Fantastic work!
This makes me want to do a SG Atlantis themed guard army.
I like great final product on the Stargate I have been tempted to make one of my own.
lorddraconum Give it a go. It was a fun project. I carved it from Balsa Foam and I did a review of the material. See my product review playlist.

lorddraconum Maybe small magnets to hold a center piece from the back of the portal? Just a thought. :)
very nice! I like the removable portal. Would allow for different colours as well as being not activated.

Needs micro LEDs, and motorization so the water slowly "spins".
I had planned on LEDs but base was a little small for that. ;)
I love the look of the gate. How did you make the water look of it ?
Several coats with different gloss gels and mod podge. I just keep layering until it looks right. Plus a little practice on a scrap piece. ;)
Beautiful work. Do you know if it is still possible to get stargate miniatures?
No idea? I guess I might be surprised if there weren't but it would be a pretty niche market so maybe not.
Where's Richard Dean Anderson when you need him?
Had to look that one up. :) Nice.

maybe you can make a piece that matches into the slot on top to hide it
Oh wow, interesting idea. Maybe next time. :)
were or how did u get or make the stargate portal ? it looks grate well done
lol Did you even watch the video,,,,,,,,
Ebon Wolf
yes I wrote this before the video was done .
michael zeches
:)
Did you use a pen/pencil for the runes? If not, what did you use?
Carved from balsa foam using sculpting tools. :)
Have you thought of using 3d printing for you terrains.
I have and its the computer sculpting that is too much for me. Creating the digital master would take me too long to learn. :(
What's your job actually? what do you for a living? doe you make toys or something or something for a movie?
He does this full time I believe
I do this full time. Its a struggle but it's satisfying in its own way. :)
Portal needs to be in a more open space not so confined and hidden and cramped in there sorry you get a thumbs down for once lol.
The customer requested it.. -.- Thumbs up from me
still would have opened it up a little more
Well I do agree with you there It would look better as a bigger piece. I'm sure it could have been done for more $$.hehe

Building a bigger ruin would add quite a bit of challenge to the project. :)
