  • More than 10,000 migrants have arrived in the UK by crossing the channel so far this year.
It is a new record for this stage in the year, surpassing the 9,326 who had crossed by this point in 2022. Last year, 7,326 migrants had arrived by small boats by 24 May.
The largest single day of crossings this year was on 1 May, when 711 people arrived, coinciding with the start of typically calmer conditions at sea.

Sort of. When they arrive on the boats, they aren't illegal immigrants - their legality has yet to be determined. Most of them are going to apply for asylum status, at which point they become asylum seekers. That's a temporary label while their claim is being processed. Eventually they either become refugees or else they can be deported. They are only illegal immigrants if they fail to register upon arrival.

These are quite often people who've been present (best case) while others have died or been injured during their journey to the UK. Read the BBC article "Inside the secret government Rwanda training base" for a brief description of likely deportee behaviour. Removal is ugly, but it's the only practical solution to non-consensual entry to / presence in the UK.
