  • In this video, I acquired TEMU woodworking tools to investigate the authenticity of the widely used shopping application, determining whether it's a legitimate platform or a potential scam. In my opinion the platform appears to offer a range of products with differing levels of quality, often at discounted rates. Notably, they provide access to responsive customer service representatives and facilitate hassle-free returns. However, it becomes evident that this application employs various tactics aimed at gathering user usage data, which is then potentially exploited for marketing endeavors.

The listing for the carving tool probably sold the shaft as a separate item. A lot of the listings are broken up that way. On the one hand its disappointing if you dont get what you expect; but on the other hand if you just need a replacement part it is nice not tk have to buy a whole new item.

The orange folding sharpener? Perfectly serviceable and hard wearing. I have one in my pouch and use it multiple times a day. Easily extends the usable life of Sheetrock blades, puts a good working edge on my pocket knife, and is handy to touch up a chisel edge when used with a strop. Used to have a DMT version - closer to 600/1000 - which cost $30, besides the handle quality, these things stack up just as well.

I think its ok for select items. Sort of like harbor freight. I would not get any sort of precision measurement tools or anything I need to hold a serious edge. But for consumables or stuff for shaping softer goods its fine. Plus they process refunds painlessly for anything you are unhappy with.

Great video. Most of the stuff that I bought from Temu were pretty good. I do have a problem with their shipping. One set of items, they had a problem with the shipping and I never received them. Another set of items came in over 2 weeks time. I did however get a $5 credit both times. They are good like that.

I have that dowel maker too. I've only put softwood through it and got a fair amount of tearout. I haven't tried hardwood yet. Definitely screw it down to a base and clamp it to your workbench. I got less tearout when I tried to feed the stock slowly. One odd note; the dowel maker in the picture I ordered from was calibrated in metric, but the one I received was Imperial which was a pleasant surprise as 98% of my drill bits are Imperial.

I buy from Temu around once a week, all sorts of stuff, from stainless steel boat fittings, small tools, led lighting, masking tape - you name it, and the package arrives in a week with an in-country post label. I imagine they may have huge warehouses actually in my country (the UK). Some stuff is pretty shitty, so appropriately priced, but other stuff, like those tools you bought, is pretty amazing value, and seriously not bad quality at all.
I recently watched a video about the China post scam, showing Chinese postage is free, even internationally. I will try to find the video, though it is somewhere in a big sea of YT videos I watch.
You have to take care buying from ANY Chinese site as they knowingly sell low cost, low quality junk, what Sir Alan Sugar termed as a "mug's eyeful". Make sure, if it is a higher cost item, that you get as close-up a picture as possible, enlarging the photos as much as you can. With other stuff, eg catapult elastic, plastic tubing, electrical wire etc you know for sure it will be inferior, so be careful what you buy.
The final point is that as our Western economies wither away the Chinese are manufacturing everything that the world used to make, buying up redundant machinery and out competing others so that all the manufacturing goes to China. How long can it go on before we haven't the money to spend on their stuff, and they will have crushed their source of income? Japan had a slightly similar economic 'miracle' but ended up losing their huge grip, so I think China is making hay while the sun shines, and who can blame them? China is no longer a poor country. It is super wealthy, with glistening skyscraper cities to rival anything Dubai or the US boasts. But when it all crashes we will get the blame. We'd better be ready to create our own manufacturing economies or we will be held to ransom by manufacturers.
But so far I have no complaints from a trading point of view about TEMU, and it's fun to just trawl their endless 'catalogue' buying stuff we don't desperately need, but would like, for example the shovel-shaped tea spoons or the digital blood oxygen reader, £20 from British shops but £1.90 from Temu. Let's have fun with it while we can, but be careful - they also make and sell a hell of a lot of utter crap. Zoom in on those pictures before you click 'BUY'!!!

Eh, China is moving towards a service economy like most "Western" economies. The cost of labor has gone up drastically the last 40 years, so they understand that foreign companies are going to look for cheaper labor sources, and I think companies are turning towards Indian production.
Now, I don't know that any country can fill the cheaper distribution lines that China has in Wuhan, though. It's primarily the product of having a semi-planned economy.
One thing they've done is really ramped up their banking industry giving them more investment in other country's infrastructure and support for their companies to manufacture goods abroad. It's not unique to China, as an example, Japan has quite a few electronics production plants in the Philippines.

I've used them a a couple of times. In both cases, the products were acceptable; albeit not top quality. Coincidentally, I think many of the products available on TEMU are the same ones on Amazon. Kind of looks like AMAZON buys them and marks them up. In either case, you're going to end up with stuff made in China. I agree about one thing and that is you need to be prudent about which items you buy. If it's going to be an item that would likely require a return at some point, I would stay with Amazon other wise, I think it's 6 of one and 1/2 doz another. All in all, I'll continue to use them for some things and not others. I also, don't put these types of apps on my phone. I'm an old fashioned guy who uses his phone.....ready ?.... to make phone calls.

Temu ships direct from manufacturer. Two advantages. 1. Amazon/Distributor mark up is eliminated. 2. Items are shipped in small packages instead of container ships. Temu takes advantage of U.S. import laws avoiding tariffs on importation that large scale (container size lots)would pay.
Also comments like ‘Chinese junk’ are what got Americans manufacturing to where it is. 70 years ago it was ‘Japanese’ junk. Now we are huge net importers and many skilled manufacturing jobs are being done elsewhere. Skilled manufacturing jobs are looked down on in the U.S. So when you see homelessness or underemployed think about it. The rest of the world is flat out competing the U.S. in manufacturing. Ships. Steel. Billy Basses you name it. Sorry for the rant.

  • @heystarfish100

Very informative but you left out a couple of important things that really stick out with these high advertising Chinese companies. Many of their products are made using slave labor from the Chinese Muslim Uyghur community and that the values of these products are also due to you undermining our law that placed tariffs on the imports of these products. TEMU gets around this by selling these products to you directly, avoiding the large purchaser importing the same goods, i.e. Amazon paying the tariffs. TEMU and Schein also put huge amounts of money in products free into the hands of CZcams influencers to promote their company and at the same time sell these goods under a loss in order for the Chinese Communist Party which overseas these operations to gather your data and pressurize American importers to punish them. All of this information is widely available for the consumer to find in a search of these companies. When you make a purchase from TEMU you are supporting slave labor and genocide for the ability to buy things cheap.

My issue with Temu and apps/companies like them (Shein, et al.) is, in addition to the concerns you raise here about data/security, that you just know prices this low can only result from, shall we say….non-kosher labor practices. All these “race to the bottom” shopping apps are supported by horrific workforce conditions and abuses.
If something seems too cheap to be possible, it’s usually because it is.

Temu = unsatisfactory product quality and a conspicuous lack of conformity with import standards have raised eyebrows. Other recurring areas of concern include: Selling of customer data, gen zers shop on Temu because the prices are low. So low, in fact, that the companies don't pay tariffs when the products are shipped screwing the U.S. and it also means that shoppers are unknowingly supporting forced labor overseas.

I've tried to explain Temu to people but where I live most Americans are "China-scared" and think buying from Temu is selling out America's interests.
It's the same stuff in Amazon, most of the time. You're just buying from a middleman in the US that takes a larger cut and so they pass that expense to you.
If Amazon supported American interests, businesses, families then maybe I would buy from them.
If I can't get it locally, I go directly to Temu. As for the data harvesting... Can't say much there. Everyone harvests your data. Only difference is what each entity does with it. If all they want is to market better then I'm fine with it. But as you mentioned, the holding company has done shady stuff before and I've never known a corrupt company to change for the better.

It is ridiculous to get so high and mighty regarding Temu purchases. Sure, they are chinese and therefore poor quality, workmanship, and materials are to be expected. The wares sold by Temu, however, perform as well, if not better, as would be expected for the price paid for them. So far, I have no complaint with them.
