Hey Jay, you went out on a great song. They would be called Rock infused R&B. Hall and Oates came from my hometown of Philly, PA. I first heard this song while watching The Steel Pier Show, which was like a local Bandstand style show. They had a video which was shot at their studio I think. But this is one of their best ever songs. Thanks
Daryl Hall has one of the greatest vocal ranges I can think of, and his voice harmonizes so nicely with John Oates' on this song, one of my favorites by them. Everything about it is perfect.
This song was before MTV, so when I was listening to them on the radio in the 70's, I really didn't know if Hall and Oates were white or black until I saw their first video on MTV and then I was like damn, these guys have a lot of soul. They completely changed course on their 80's songs, but they kept pouring out hit after hit so they were obviously doing something very right. One of my favorite duos of all time. "Out of Touch" is probably my favorite Hall and Oates song. Oh, and Gerry Rafferty is probably my favorite soft rock singer. "Baker Street" & "Right Down the Line" are masterpieces.
They played AT MY HIGH SCHOOL in 1981/82 when we won a contest. I’m afraid to say we really didn’t appreciate them at the time. They were kind of “in-between acts” Not quite has-beens, but soon after they became HUGE.
Daryl Hall is such a legend. He's still rocking at age 74. Check out the videos from his house where he invites other artists to perform with him at his house. Smoky Robinson, Cee Lo Green, Wyclef, and the O Jays are just a few of the artists that join him to jam. Tomorrow will be a live streaming event with 50 other artists. But, check out his version of "Neither One Of Us".....it's so great it's a life changer.
OH, how this song hits me straight through my heart 💔 My Wife and I lost each other for a year💔 I couldn't listen to this one without tearing up😢 Now we're back together and STRONGER than before ❤️💯 Praise Our Father in Heaven, Amen🙏
At the time it was called "blue eyed soul". I don't think they ever had a bad song. If you haven't heard Sara Smile, listen to it. I had a German Shepherd 1982-1997 named Sara who would show her teeth and smile when she was happy. The song, Sara Smile, still makes me cry.
One of the best 'broken-heart' songs of all time. Complex harmonies, deeply layered instrumentation and a wonderfully soulful vibe. LOVED your reaction to this goose-bump inducing tune!
Oh my Jovaughn, what this is considered is GREAT MUSIC from one of the most talented duets. They could sing the phone book (old point of reference) and bring in the sax and make it sound great. Thanks for this.
Imo their best song. The keyboard sound, soul sisters' background vocals & then the harmony between the 2 vocalists. Imo this was their signature song. ✌
I love Darryl Hall and John Oates! They were considered blue-eyed soul!! They were so soulful and were inspired by the music of Motown and even toured with former Temptations, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks in the eighties! They were genius and their music is still amazing! ❤️❤️
One of the best duos in musical history. Their voices match perfectly. My mom used to play Hall & Oates in our station wagon in the 80s-90s. Great memories.
John (dark hair) wrote this song about his girlfriend when she left him. This was their first hit. That first pic was them now. They're both great songwriters & have aged well! They were heavily influenced by Motown.
Daryl HALL is the Blonde Jay And John Oates the One with the Village People Moustache. Daryl Has a Superb Soulful Voice and his Solo album “Soul Alone” in 1993 really showcased his vocal talents even more than His Duo days of Hall and Oates.
THIS is how the love began!!!! THIS. IS. HALL & OATES. (Applause….) I CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT A FREAKING GREAT VOCALIST DARYL HALL IS!! See, kids, I grew up thinking this was normal. Evidently not, because I haven’t heard anything like this since. What’s crazy is that this is one of the songs that taught me how to sing (like before I could run or read). Say you have the developing brain of a baby and you pump this music in before they know what music is! THIS SOUNDED LIKE ONE VOICE TO ME AS A TODDLER. Then singing to it blasting on the radio in the back seat of my parents car riding to the store… Guess what. My vocals have depth and range thanks to these two gentlemen! Yes. I you can actually sing CHORDS. Lol. Well, I only had one of me to sing all of the parts at once. I have got to put this on my freaking play list. Gah!
Check out "Wait for Me" live version. Darryl Hall is wearing a white tee in this live version. His voice is phenomenal in this one. They both do a great job here.
I finally understood what "blue eyed soul" was after these boys. I've known/listened to them since they came onto the scene, I just didn't know that was a description of their music. Almost all their music is fantastic!!!
This and Sara Smile are my favorite Hall & Oates’ songs. Their music was referred to as Blue Eyed Soul. Their music was a mix of pop, rock and soul. I saw them a few years ago. It was like a big, ole dance party.
Daryl Hall is the blond and John Oates is the brunet. This is a great song to hear more of John's voice as he takes the lead & Daryl weaves harmony around him.
You've listened to quite a few great songs of the 60's 70's 80's and 90's and you're not even remotely halfway through, so many awesome songs that weren't Top 40 hits and are forgotten and need to have the spotlight shined on them now if can just pull out my 3500 CD collection out of the attic to boost my memory :)
I have been a huge fan of Hall and Oates since I was a kid and they bang out, some great rock and soul, mixed with the best RnB vibes! Excellent singers and musicians! Very versatile! Daryl said when he was 16, he hung out with the Temptations. They were friends of David Ruffin among others. Thanks for the upload!
Best thing to ever come out of Temple University in Philadelphia,Pa.......Hall and Oates. Number 1 selling recording artists of the 80's! Glad you young folks are enjoying our music from the old days

I saw them in Cleveland Oh many moons ago. They are in a league all their own ..Darrell owns houses in New York ..He collaborates with other professional singers and they are so amazing.Darrell also restores the homes ..🌺😂
Here's another fun story. They first met in the 1960's while in College. Their Two Bands The Temptones & The Masters were part of a Battle Of The Bands at The Adelphi Ballroom on Campus at Temple University. There was a fight, they ran for cover and met in an Elevator. Co-Incidentally that's how the Songwriting Team of Kenny Gamble/Leon Huff met as well and Daryl worked with Kenny Gamble in the early days of the his career.

In the 70's they called this Soft Rock or Easy Listening, which was a disservice because they fused different sounds with each song on each album. They broke out of that Easy Listening category once their stride took off in 1979-1986. They are actually Philly boys who liked to bring Soul/R&B into their music. Their music spanned from 1970-Today - Preferably 1973, 1976, 1979-1986 and 1990's-Early 2000's. You may want to look into their solo work too.
Thanks J💝Y for playing this, song reminds me of my friend who died last year. She use to listen to a radio channel in the UK 🇬🇧 called “Smooth Radio” you would love it. Try and see if you can get it on the internet 😃
Yacht is pronounced yot or yawt. Rhymes with not and lot (although some accents make it a longer sound in the middle than that). It's those big fancy boats that rappers and rock stars shoot their videos on.
This was inspired when John got stood up on a Date for New Year's Eve. It was their breakthrough Song at RCA after flopping at Atlantic. They are a rarity because they were part of the Old School and New School. In America they did The Midnight Special, Solid Gold, American Bandstand and were one of the very few White Acts to do Soul Train. In The UK they did The Old Grey Whistle Test, and Top Of The Pops which is Britian's Longest Running Music Show. John had wanted to Dance on American Bandstand but by the time he was Old enough it moved to LA. Philly had alot of amazing Blue Eyed Soul Singers. Them Len Barry (123), Karen Young (Hot Shot), and Vickie Sue Robinson (Turn The Beat Around). (RIP).
I love a saxophone in rock music. Bob Seger has had the same sax player for 40 years. I saw them two years ago and they were fabulous. They sounded the same from all those years ago. I almost didn’t go, but I didn’t want to miss the last chance for them to come around. It was phenomenal!! ❤️🌹❤️
LOVE this song and Hall & Oats! I saw them in '84, magic happened when they were on that stage...what an amazing concert. Listen to their hit "Adult Education"
The memory of this song brings back such laughter...I know its not about anything funny. But I can remember being back working in a factory in Chicago burbs...and one of the guys on the floor.. We all burst out laughing ...so glad to break the tension...lol..good times ...good music.

Young Dary Hall was tremendous.
Thing is, so many people think it's Daryl singing most of it when John actually carries it, especially in the beginning.
His solo album "Sacred Songs" is stunning. He could have been Bowie if he wanted to. Dude could sing anything.
Hall & Oats is the kind of band I can listen to the whole CD without skipping a song.
Blue eye soul. Philly sound.
