- How to tip the front desk to recieve a room upgrade and why using the Las Vegas “sandwich trick” of hiding a $20 between your credit card and ID is outdated and unnecessary. An upgrade may simply mean a higher floor, a more recently renovated room or even a suite. Ask for what you want if you have something specific in mine, be kind, patient, polite and use these best practices to increase your chances of an improved, nicer hotel room. #vegas #lasvegas #vegasstarfish #vegashotels #hotelupgrade #vegasresort #vegassuite #vegasroomtour #vegaslocal #vegasonabudget #vegasexperience #vegasroom #traveltips #vegastravel #vegasplanning #vegasvacation
I booked a regular room at the Aria for my bday. I got to the desk, told the gentleman at the desk I was there for my bday. He got excited for me and asked if I wanted an upgrade. I actually told him, I've been looking at the rooms on the website and I really would like a high floor with either a step view or a city view. He said sure no problem. The room ever up being a corner room that had a view of both♥️♥️ The morning of my birthday, a knock on my door. I go to answer it, the attendant pushed in a table. Breakfast on the house, flowers, champagne, balloons and a dessert plate that had Happy Birthday from the Aria and staff. It is now my personal tradition to stay at the Aria around my birthday. I really thought about using the tip trick but the property was just so stunning and the rooms doubly so that I turned down the upgrade. One of the best birthdays I've had♥️
That's incredibly nice wow
Such a nice story
Former front desk agent here. Sometimes we would give upgrades for free because it was a special occasion or we really bribed with the guests and they were super kind and patient. We would send up fresh fruit and cheese with wine platters. Give free drink tickets/ breakfast vouchers. Free food/snacks from the pantry and upgrade the room for no tip at all. Of course the guests would always tip anyways once they saw how much we did for them just because they were them. I really miss that job because I met really cool guests and they gave me sentimental tips/gifts like hand drawn portraits, supportive/inspiring notes, cool snacks, knitted hats and scarves, and even plants. I really loved connecting with them and they always asked for me when they would come back everytime.
Love this video!!! She is 1000% correct! As a front desk manager for 5 years and former front desk agent for 12 years with strictly big box hotel experience I can say that tipping the front desk agent will DEFINITELY help you get an upgrade. Upgrading a guest at check in, especially during a slow season, is no sweat off the agents back at all! The upgraded rooms or suites are just sitting there vacant anyway. And revenue is revenue no matter what room/suite I put you in during dead season. Now you might not get a 1 bedroom executive suite! because that would require making a second reservation at a zero rate which would raise a red flag for me as a manager because that is technically a free room being given away to build that 1 bedroom + the suite. But even then I’ve ok’d those types of upgrades. Most agents will definitely place you in a room that’s an upgrade higher than the room category you booked at the very least. I’ve given out free drink coupons and an upgraded room/suite with a view for a tip! It’s nothing to the agent at check in to do that for the guest. On sold out nights we give the upgraded rooms/suites away anyway because we have to. But anytime a guest has given me a tip and asked for an upgrade I’ve been able to do something for them. Tbh, guests who are tipping for upgrades like that are super cool and friendly so it makes you want to hook them up even more! The guests that are a problem are the ones that don’t offer to tip ANYTHING but demand EVERYTHING for free at check in (when they booked the cheapest room they could find on Expedia). Also, as long as the agent is not soliciting cash upgrades or saying give me so much cash and I’ll hook you up it’s totally fine. Guests sometimes will slide a 50 across the desk and say can you do something for me? I would definitely take care of them! I’ll never be too good to accept a tip! It also depends on how empowered the agents are to do those things. Some hotels are more strict than others. But most big box properties I.e. 1,000 rooms or more, the agents have the power to give things away easily during slow season.
As a former front desk, did you ever get tipped with a gift card? Just curious...
Yeah as someone that works at a high end hotel I suggest never trying to tip the agent to get an upgrade. Thats just not going to work.
That sometimes work not all the time I’ve been to Vegas plenty of times and I have tipped over $50 and I still got the same room.
Yup, at the palms, the D, and former LV Hilton, they all smiled, snatched the tip and acted like it never happened.
As a Front Desk supervisor, I can guarantee a tip will not get you an upgrade 😅
Just ask nicely and if we do have one we'll get you one tip or no tip - dont be rude or we'll get you the WORST room in the hotel ❤
So be nice? I mean seriously that was more helpful than this video
@@Tony29103Not just nice, but like butter them up a bit. Acknowledge they are a human being and not a robot and you'll be surprised how much people will bend over backwards for you. Walmart would not take my items back I bought online for return one time because I didn't have a box. I brought them back with a box, and I complimented the girl on her Deadpool shirt and was like are you going to see Deadpool 2?! We had a decent chat after. And even though she said the box I brought was unacceptable, she found me one to ship it in. It takes so little to make a person's day, just try it and see what happens.
As a fellow hospitality worker I Love this comment. Be nice to us and we will work with you. Be difficult just because you feel entitled and your on your own
If you would upgrade them for free why wouldn’t you upgrade them if they gave you a $50 cash tip? Do you not like money? 😂😂😂
@@taylorsanders7811lol they're just saying it's not necessary. I'm sure they wouldn't turn it down.
I remember one of my fellow coworkers went on a vacation to some resort in Mexico. Gave the front desk agent a $200 tip for an upgrade. The upgrade was only like $70. He didn't find out till his cousins who joined them two days later also paid to get their room upgraded. Right next to theirs lol
Why tip 50 dollars so you might get an upgrade? If you can afford that, just book a better room.
That requires you to use your brain
Because 3 night stay in a better room costs more than 20 to 50 dollars. I wouldn't tip 50 but still
@@adamo36532😂😂😂
Agreed
I work in Hotel house keeping at a Casino and we greatly appreciate tips.
You guys don’t get tips from me. You don’t change the sheets half the time, there’s piss on the toilet, hairs in the sink, unvaccumed carpet etc. Do better.
@@Mouthwashhpeople like you are welcome to Las Vegas, just stay on the streets. 😮
@@Mouthwashh Not at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake Minnesota. We are super big on keeping it clean and if something is run down or damaged will be replaced. We are the cleanest biggest casino in the Midwest.
all I did was be friendly and ask..got a nice upgrade with a beautiful view
50$ just to be told thanks we don’t have any upgrades
“I’ll talk about that in a second “ is a staple in your videos.
Tipping is really bribery these days.
It goes without saying, be polite.
I can't believe how many people want a room upgrade and they literally march up hand them $5 and demand an upgrade! That is not how it's done folks. 😂 Love your content. 🎉
Genius!!
I tipeed the check in person and laye at night when I was drunk, they just took me to my room.
Lol!!
I have fun in Las Vegas.
Still waiting for my sandwich
Just use the money to book a better room????
😶🌫️
People would pay $20 to avoid a 45 minute line
Yes, playa!! That's 45 minutes of my time! I don't want to waste it in line somewhere.
Did a tip’wich of $50 at GVR and got shafted. 😂
I always say “I’m going to be spending a lot of money here, and I know how hard you work, I’m in customer service myself.” Give $20. “And if there is any comp’d upgrades, that would be wonderful. If not, no worries that $20 is for you.” I have always been double upgraded to an incredible room or view or both if available of course. And you’re in Vegas to gamble. Why not make your first bet on a hard working human who may give you an upgrade? The slot machines won’t say thank you when you give them way more than $20. So it’s a good bet.
There’s lots of things to do in Vegas aside from gambling
I am going to spend a lot of money here apart from the room 😂
Sirlowroller confirmed, here's your upgrade for $20
👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is true I’m a front desk manager being nice will get you a long way with the from desk agents. I upgrade for free all the time if i see it’s your birthday or anniversary in the reservation notes
The 20 bucks got me an upgrade to a corner suite... at the Luxor. It was still a terrible room. (And I live here! We just get a room on strip once in awhile like when we go to cons or events.) I'd hate to have had a regular room considering what we got.
Thats a low key corruption!
100% true! I worked front desk b4. Be polite, and ask. If roon rates are low. Means occupancy is low. So upgrades maybe available.
Imagine saying all this like it's some secret knowledge.
Wow you made a video answering my question, much appreciated
Hotel Chains watching this - Time to enforce desk guidelines.
An exercise in vulgarity.
Also if you can get a corner room get it, as long as it's not near an ice machine or the elevator. Corner rooms are usually much larger.
The hotels u showed look amazing
But what if they can’t upgrade.
Do they keep the money?
It's a debatable topic among Vegas influencers and those who tip. When I did it, I let the agent keep it as she was very nice and we had a great chat about Disney since the desk was quiet. They did, however, send up a little cake and a bottle of wine, though they had no reason to do that. The cake and wine were worth the $20.
Can I take the 50 tip back if they don't give me the upgrade?
This is called a bribe 😂 not a tip
Ohhhhhh did you do this for me???? Hehehehe. This was great!
I'm using the sandwich trick for sure now.
As an European, this is stupid to me. If you want an upgraded room, just book it beforehand instead of being a cheapskate and trying to get it for less by “tipping” the front desk. That’s not tipping, that’s being cheap.
20 or 50!!!!! FOR DOING WUT!!!
AS SOMEONE WHO'S WORKED THE FRONT DESK AT A HOTEL I CAN TELL YOU RIGHT NOW THAT 20 OR $50 FOR THEM IS WELL UNDESERVED
Smart lady ; true !
Although this is a very helpful tip, it’s no wonder check-in kiosks are becoming more & more common. Hotels “lose money “ of free upgrades are done.
The very best chance of getting a presidential suite is letting front desk know the password: Details are not in the comments.
You'd be surprised by how much free things you can get, just by being nice to people.
Slam $20 on the counter and politely ask if an upgrade is available, if the front desk declined, take that ish back 😂
but what if they dont upgrade you? like you awkwardly take the money back?
When you hit a jackpot the person paying you expects a tip ….😂😂😂 GTFO 😂😂😂
Why does everyone make a big deal about the sandwich trick if it is not needed? I would rather be overt, but I worry that some hotels might care?
I wish we could get info on best place to stay if you are disabled?
$20 to $50 dollar tip just pay for the upgrade at booking
Sometimes a strip view is only $20 more (at least has been my experience at Wynn)
Forget the hotel rooms esp on the strip. We stay @ short term condos or timeshares for rent. You have a full apartment. No resort fees. Free parking. And with the sep bedrooms you can rest when u want to.
Man if I had an extra $50 to tip I’d be vacationing in Vegas! Wait… 😅
Don't try this at Grenn Valley Resort the front desk guy took the $40 bucks I tipped for a free upgrade request rudely and refused to give a free upgrade instead appointed me to an upgrade for $200 more a night instead! He was rude and very unprofessional.
it's usually a hit or miss sorry to hear he was rude and unprofessional but @ the end your literally taking a "gamble" for an upgrade
I don’t think I’ve seen a human at check in for the last 7 years I’ve been to Vegas. I wonder if I give the kiosk a good ole rub & tug if I’ll get that upgrade or not.
Sooo...if I get what yer sayin, I have a better chance of getting an upgrade if I pay 2-3x as much for the room to begin with, plus a tip? Naw...I'll stick with my reasonably priced non-upgraded room from Priceline.
What if you tip and don’t get an upgrade
it's the chance your taking to hopefully get an upgrade or something so it's literally a "gamble"
Watched it
This isn’t true. I don’t the 20$ trick and sometimes I get a suite and sometimes not. Doesn’t matter the day or week
NEVER tip, use or carry $50 bills in Vegas. It is considered a jinx
So basically, if the hotels empty and you’re on a Tuesday or Wednesday. They’ll do something nice for you if you give them money
It’s in a shitty neighborhood but the Hotel and security is A-ok. Thanks for review anyhow. Pls. post polls.
One problem You have to stand in a mile long line to actually talk to a real person instead of using kiosk.
I've stayed in roadside ins better than that first room you showed
What's the sandwich trick lol
It's where you fold up a $20 or a $50 a bill then put it between your credit card and your driver's license and give it to the desk agent @ check in since you have to use both to check into your room anyways basically to conceal the bill
Just tell them it's your first year anniversary
Instructions unclear I’ve been charged $5k for a suite
The real key is to just talk to the manager of those people. Have the youngest person in your group act like they don't have much money and they're trying to go from hotel to hotel seeing how cheap they can get a room. On a weekend I got a room at Harrah's for $75 dollars because they were availabilities and the guy that gets paid to fill rooms knew I was about to walk to another hotel if he didn't cut me a deal
The best option is never go to Vegas!
this is the most scamerican video ive seen today
if you want an upgrade...then just book the dang upgrade. stop wasting money on made up tips.
I know I'm gambling but $50 for a maybe isn't my type of gamble
It's literally the "gamble" your taking for an upgrade or something
With the HIGH COST of RESORT FEES ... there's NO MONEY LEFT for TIPPING 😡
sometimes tipping them can waive the resort fees but of course that's extremely rare(I only heard of a few cases of it) but it can still get you an upgrade or something
It's bribery. Just simply ask.
Just asking without tipping doesn't always work most of the time but if you tip them you will have a much better chance they will wanna give you an upgrade or something
@@GranTube I don't believe in that. That's why there's so much underhanded stuff going on in the world. I only think about giving the check in staff a tip if they gave me a complimentary upgrade. And I surely don't give it to them then. I wait for a different time.
@@GranTube yeah and thats bribery. Just like a police officer will sometimes overlook you speeding and not give u a ticket but if he gets a 'tip' he will definitely not give u a ticket
Never stay a hotel with a tub/shower
Why?
@@GranTube they don’t clean them get a stand up shower only!
Still didn’t explain the sandwich..
It's where you fold up a $20 or a $50 bill then you put it between your credit card and your driver's license and give it to the desk agent @ check in so basically concealing the bill
Does not work at time shares, by the way
Do not buy her package. Complete scam.
$20 or $50! doesn't help to get upgrades anymore, I was pleased to drop $500+ tip after getting comped for a few days and was instantly upgraded to a penthouse suite... money talks.
yup money talks bullshit walks
tipping front desk staff is 100% not customary, please don't listen to this insane person. if you want an upgrade, just ask if it's available nicely.
it's not always guaranteed cuz @ the end you are hoping they will give it to you but tipping helps a little more they are more likely to wanna give you an upgrade or something especially during busy seasons but @ the end it's still a "gamble"
I'm so tired of this tipping culture.
why not take the "gamble" if you can get an upgrade or something no harm in doing so
that’s not tipping madam that’s bribery
As a casino owner, I object. Full rate, no tipping.
Fuck your casino
$20 dont work anymore. I guess its $50 if you want something.
though it's a hit or miss it oftentimes depends on where you stay sometimes it does still work especially @ lower end properties
tipping in vegas is a joke . I tip only certain people.
Americans
Good joke
Stop tipping in the US!!!
that's part of our culture and has been forever
