You're talking about the Komodo but I'm just mighty impressed that the Eos R is handling that sunlight in the background perfectly!
That's the most HDR vlog I've seen.
HDR is truly impressive
Dude, you do wonders even with the EOS R. Looks sooooo smooth.
MKBHD's advice: never buy a camera for what it might eventually be - buy it if what it is right now is what you want / need. One big consideration in this respect is autofocus. What are your thoughts on MKBHD's advice? Also, you already have a C200. If you got the Komodo, what would your full setup be for cinema, portable video, and photo?
For a lot of cine camera users, this camera is an amazing buy right now. I hope the autofocus becomes usable but even if it doesnât I want this camera
@@stalman Yep, 16 bit raw, lots of flexibility there
@@stalman It's a cinema camera though, i don't think people look for autofocus on a cinema camera.
Christopher Wadsworth so y has 16bit raw as well for 3500
@@aytothemm.1035 4k+...you need the Atomos
More than anything, this made me want an EOS R.
Yeah me too, the vlog footage here looks amazing
Me la acaba de explotar que Tommy Torres esta viendo esto.
me too ^_^
He is using external lighting at 7:50. Probably using a bounce in the boat shots towards the sky (the boat is also white inside).
I use a eos r for work, it's pretty sweet and user friendly. Not cinema quality but great for client work for sure
Amazing. We just did a shoot with a few teams we work with from Costa Rica and New Orleans, and got to check-up a few new/upcoming cameras, of which that was one. Great look, good form factor, decent price on the RED Komodo. However, have you shot with the SONY A7SIII in low light, and/or done some landscape astro with it. UNBEFREAKINGLEAVABLE! Nothing out there compares to that new SONY, and we are actually dropping 5 different cameras we have, including a 2 year old ARRI and going to it, and an A9II for sports and other things.
The low light, focus and editable of the SONY A7SIII is so far beyond the new RED that it makes it look like it is 5 year old tech in comparison.
We actually dropped our EPIC units for Blackmagic URSA and P6K's about a year ago (and getting a 12K BM in about 3 weeks, with any luck). RED is great for those who are comfortable with using them already and have all the acquisition and post hardware already. We got 6 GMaster lenses, a quint-CINE series of lenses, a 200-600mm f/5.6, a 600mm f/2.8 and two A7SIII's for the price of our ARRI and two lenses, and gained serious capabilities and new creative options.
Rent of borrow one when it comes in, make sure to use GMaster lenses (allow you to focus instantly in light 4-6 stops below the lowest light that other pro cams focus at), and at high side native ISO of 16,000, you can light a table with a single candle (really, no ambient or other source), and at around ISO 16,000 (or 12.5K-32K) the noise level is where a super-35 looks like at ISO 320 or S-LOG 640. You can shoot at ISO 40,000 in a cave (we did it) that had a little bounce from the mouth of the cave 25 feet away, and it looked like IS0 3200 on a typical S-35 sensor.
You can do great work with any of these, but the creative low light capabilities of the new SONY (ordered 2 of them, BTW) are not reproducable by anything we have ever owned or rented. And once we get the 16-bit ATOMOS Neon in, it will be push-able in post beyond any Super-35 based unit at almost any price.
Thanks for this
Great comment. I feel like a lot of A7 reviews kind of gloss over its low light capabilities but this helps me realize what a big deal that is.
Yes
For sure!
So lovely seeing that you three were able to meet up. And Iâm not in the market for any upgrade but now Iâm wanting this camera...what an amazing little beast.
a7siii shooting 16 bit proress raw vs this will be interesting. I would probably still lean towards the sony (full frame, lenses, better autofocus)
You can't compare the ProRes RAW with Redcode RAW because ProRes RAW giving you the performance of ProRes 4444 but smaller file sizes. Komodo has real 16bit Redcode RAW and more DR than bloody Siii. Btw, Komodo is FF body with cropped window in 4K and 1080p. :)
@@iozguryildirim komodo is slightly larger than super 35 full frame, which is actually similar size to aps-c (with about a 1.5x crop, komodo may be around 1.3x crop from some rumours) in it's 6k resolution. while photography full frame is 1.0x, so I don't know what you are talking about by "full frame body"............as for the dynamic range, komodo may have more dynamic range, but I want to see the test showing whether it does or doesn't (not what the pr/marketing departments say)
I personally own a red scarlet, and I own an a7sii. just curious how these newer cameras compare
Imagine being able to travel. đ
Me toođ
Welcome to the Netherlands Tyler! Hope you enjoy and have some fun while youâre here!
The Komodo definitely produces some beautiful images! But I was also super impressed by the image of your vlog with the EOS R!
Great video! Definitely excited about this, especially with the rf mount
Most of my clients are happy with your EOS R quality and colorgrade, awesome.
Really nice video, I love your grading!!
nicely done my friend!! Man I miss Amsterdam too!!
Well, come around then! Ill show you some great spots in the city!
This made me miss Amsterdam so much. â„ïž
I love how much love there is for the EOS R in this comments section đ
The dynamic range alone is WILD! waoh! That little beast is amazing!
I have an eos r and the RF 50mm for photos and I never knew the videos could look like THAT! The sky is absolutely beautiful. Love the color grading.
Love all the new camera options and the options to rig that Red. Gonna stick to z cam though for now! Great video!!
10:17 That global shutter + FCPX stabilization though! đ€Ż
Brother your colour grade is insane it looks so good to our eye's and your videos are so pleasing
Great video Tyler - really enjoyed that đ
these red shots look amazing. i think I should get this over the BM6K!
Video looks gorgeous mate!
nice camera, but dont agree with low light, i think is terrible if you compare with bmpcc or zcam
Amazing video bro!, by any chance can you the wood handle you guys used on the komodo?
I loved the combination of the RED handle and wood handle!
Your EOS R image looks also pretty good!!!
Here's the real question. How did you get to Europe during these times? :D
the answer is crime
Canada
A plane
you can leave and come back anywhere in Canada. You can even go to the US and come back(which is so dumb), but yeah. It's all what each country allows. Some countries require a paid 2 week quarantine(Korea, Canada ect.) or not (most of EU)
He sailed by the boat thats in this video, obviously.
also thinking about the RED Komodo, A7sIII, and R5.. but I got a Panasonic S1H in January and it's *really* hard to find all the same features in one body
Love this video and Love Amsterdam (been there 3x)
Thanks for sharing Tyler. Iâm planning on getting a hold of one of the Komodoâs and running some comparisons on my channel. Itâs an interesting camera for sure, but what kills it for me is that is can only do 40fps in full sensor readout. To me it doesnât feel quite slow enough.
I have the exact same concern
Griffin! Love your channel. Super psyched for the eventual comparison. Would love to see what you could do with one of these!
Vlog R footage looking too good. The Komodo does look like an ideal buy for me. Iâd love to test it to really see how it works hands on.
This just looks like a movie. So high quality
Tyler, where did you buy your shirt?
What len did you used on vlog?
The EOS R footage in this vlog looks fantastic Tyler! Got me feeling pumped to be more creative with mine. Assuming you were shooting internal log on the EOS R? Do you have a video on grading clog?
Thats because in Amsterdam summers stay beautifully lit so most cameras look amazing there, this video doesn't push the cameras to the limits too much
Oh man you've visited the city during the right time. The weather is terrible right now
You put me on to the Komodo. I ordered one last week đđœ
mind sharing the list of rig part that your film maker friend rig on his komodo?
Your vlog looks soooooo gooooood đđ
I forgot until your brought them up.
How is in low light?
can we please stop at 3:12 and see the perfection on that image? damn i need a komodo asap
The color grade on this camera is so nostalgic
It's definitely a beautiful image, and great video! Well done! But would love to know your thoughts on the colour banding in the sky (at places like 3:28). You can't have been shooting in 8-bit so I'm surprised it's so noticeable. Maybe something I'm not understanding about how posterization works? Or I'm just being too critical?
If youâre seeing any banding itâs 100% CZcamsâs compression. The real footage has no hint of banding anywhere
@@stalman Perfect, just the answer I was after! Thanks.
Hey, sweet, I got to test this brand new, pretty expensive camera!
What should we do?
Let's take it in a boat!
The EOS R looked great tho! Do you shoot in clog?
Because he's in Amsterdam?
@@ollieeddie C-log
Thanks for this video, Tyler. For a second I thought you were in Venice, Italy and I was gonna say "you got the t-shirt like the guys who sail the gondolas", lol Yup. I love this camera... what can I say. I got the bmpcc 6k pro and I'm very happy with it, but this is something else!
Jeez that highlight and shadow retention đ
Pretty nice dynamic range. It's like a better version of the BM Pocket 6K
Why lately ive been thinking to get eos R instead of duo R5/6 đ€đ€đ€đ€đ€
What are its stills specs though?
Oh wow you are in Amsterdam! i live near there thats so awesome
professional use autofocus too. when i shoot interview, i don't understand the need for manual focus. sticking with my eos r with external recorder. the crop means i am allow to use my apsc lens such as sigma 18-35 which is just the cherry on top
Depends on what professional platform. When we film Billboard music awards, Pro boxing, UFC, and concerts for live broadcast, all my cam ops use manual focus only. I do realize auto focus for certain situations are a blessing but sometimes it's better to hire someone with 8 plus years of focus pulling then relying on Ai. Also I can't fire Ai. lmao
@Urzu.7 naah, i said i use eos r, but that doesn't mean i don't have the fx9 and renting c300. he said it in previous video too that the context that professional not using autofocus is no longer correct
Freek! Love it...
Very informative. Thanks for doing this video. If you can do a video on how you did post production (color correct/grade), that would be great. TIA
Someday! The best part about Red is it does most of the work for you, very minimal time spent grading
Is it a true 16 bit color sensor?
Anja looks SO focused on the boat driving ! haha. But damn Tyler, living in Amsterdam if I'd spotted you i'd fanboy for a bit, probably totally embarrassing myself in the process :-D Your channel is definitely a favorite to follow for the amazing content. Hope you enjoyed your stay here ! seemed like you were here whilst Dutch summer lasted (our summers are short haha)
Thanks so much man, weâll be back for a few more days so keep an eye for us in the canals
thumbs up for the vintage zeiss đ
The HDR looks very good
Red Komodo is great but by the time you build that camera out itâs gonna be the same weight as a regular RED, and the batteries are big so once you put a lens on it balancing it on a Ronin-s itâs Nice enough clearance what is the tilt motor I find the A7Sthree as the best option for a small camera that gives you good results especially if you need it for run and gun discreet situations the fact that I have to build up on the komod on the Komodo is a dealbreaker for me the A7S three seems more discrete and smaller to work with
How loud is it?
But why not nice setup with Z Cam or Blackmagic?
Iâm wanting to make a short film. If I want it to look as close to a movie youâd see on the big screen, but without breaking my wallet, would a bmpcc 6k look fairly similar to the Komoto 6k? And would it look somewhat like movie quality?
Blackmagic looks great
You can't go wrong with a bmpcc 6k
Forget that $6000 price for the red. At that price you can get a s1h with lens and memory
How do you get sponsored by square space
what are your thoughts on this vs the fx9 and c300 mk iii. i think those two are a better choice. especially in my opinion the autofocus is totally worth it, plus i prefer canon colours over red. the fx9 is the only auto exposure that uses the electronic nd which is extremely handy and it is close to venice in terms of image quality.
Both of those cameras make more sense for more people, it really depends on what youâre shooting. And this Red is still less expensive than either
So you finally nearly got it :)
You know they said the same about the Raven when it first came out that it was designed to be a crash cam and match up with the other DSMC2 dragon 16.5 stop sensors. Which it does , I owned one, but have since sold it.
Itâs such a nice camera đ€
Man that editing
To me this is the best EOS R commercial ever! What was the video really about!
Do you use a filter for your videos or just grade the footage?
Yes it is graded
How could R5/R6 even be a consideration if they overheat within 20 minutes
Stills ... Thats about it.
It doesn't ... It's a firmware limitation deliberately programmed in ... It can be removed.
@@ProjectOverseer post the link to the hack. or make a DIY fix-it hack vid. you'd be famous. tons of views. even a few marriage proposals maybe...
Komodo and A7siii are very different use cases. I feel like overall the A7siii is far more a of a jack of all trades, which the Komodo is really really good for what it was designed for.
Absolutely, they are extremely different. I happen to need both use cases, but in general they fill different gaps
Nice vlogging camera
How much GB was it after the whole boat ride? đ đ„Ž
I thought that was gonna be Nico from Corridor Digital when you first panned over to your friend
It looks good though I wait for full-frame version of komodo. S35 with RF combo not i want to invest now
It would be nice, but might be a long wait
BMD for the win... constantly. âïž
so.... that camera has like a super 35 sensor, right? so basically the camera that competes with it would be the black magic 6k.... if we think about it....... i think for filmmakers both are really good options, they do offer beautiful image for sure.......
The pocket 6k sensor is slightly smaller than super 35 while I believe the Komodo's is slightly larger.
Countdown for Rode to do their version of Dietyâs new mic starts now đ
Man, gotta love Amsterdam...
Tyler, when you shot Ania with both the Eos R and Komodo, were you using the same lens and aperture? The komodo has a shallower depth of field, but a smaller sensor size compared to the Eos R
No the lenses were no matched at all, they were wildly different. Only look at them for the color and dynamic range
@@stalman I see, thanks for the information. I was noticing how much more shallow the komodo was in terms of DOF and was getting confused as to why a super 35mm is shallower than a full frame
This feels like less of a competitor to Canon and sony cameras but more of a competitor to BM pocket cinema cameras and URSA minis.
It definitely is, itâs just the first of the type of camera to tempt me away from the great new mirrorless options
Is the RED even a comparison to an A7 or R5?
As someone who owns and shoots RED and Sony mirrorless, this looks to me like truly the best of both worlds. It's a legit RED that can be mounted on a one handed gimbal and natively mounts arguably the most exciting new lens line (RF). Those of you trying to compare it to mirrorless cameras really have no idea what you're talking about. REDs not only shoot beautiful images but the IPP2 workflow and smoothness of editing R3D files is a Godsend if you're used to fighting with the trash Sony and Canon codecs....and if all that's not enough to convince you, maybe high frame rate 16bit RAW internal will....and all for under $10K?! My current RED set me back twice that amount. Exciting times.
So how much is the red by itself? And how much is thr sony a7s iii body only? Compare to the two prices and then come back to tell me agaib why companies made affordable mirrorless video cameras :)
@@dangermanv6133 My comment wasn't meant to be centered on price, but if you want to go there, I'll bite: I shoot interiors professionally, and have found the RED system to be infinitely easier to work with in post. This is due to the 16.5+ stops of dynamic range. The only way to get even close to that with 8 bit or 10 bit anything is to shoot log, recover highlights into gray mud, boost shadows into noisy gray mud, denoise, curse about loss of sharpness, try to change denoised gray mud back into white mud and black mud...more cursing... You see, I shoot 3-4 property videos per week, and they need to be turned quickly. That becomes a balance of quality and time. We all know time is money, so regardless of whatever cost difference the bodies are from each other, the RED is the right tool and will ultimately save me a pile of money from the time savings in post. The videos I produce are not perfect by any stretch...they're banged out in a couple hours start to finish, and the RED gets me a much better looking product in that time. Is the RED anything right for most people?...of course not, but the people who it is right for know exactly why that is, and as yet there is no mirrorless camera that can fit those needs. I have no brand loyalty, so when there is a lighter, cheaper mirrorless camera developed that really has cine cam capability I'll be the first in line to buy it so I can stop hauling around a rig that costs as much as a new car.
I agree this dude gets it itâs a shame not a lot of people get this. I feel like my channel is for people like this who get real filmmaking
Loud&Clear I get your point and mostly agree. This is a great camera. However, is it worth the cost premium over a Black magic pocket 4K or 6k? You get raw out of both of those, 13 stops of dynamic range and the Braw codec is super easy to work with in Davinci. The program acts like it doesnât even notice braw like itâs doing the job one handed just because it can. And you can get 4-6 of those for the same price as one of these. That makes this a much harder sell tbh. And their new 12k model has built in nd filters and interchangeable mounts yes? At like 10,000 usd or something like that and I think 15 stops of dynamic range too?
@@cheeeeezewizzz I've looked into the pocket cine cams before, and still may be interested at some point. It's hard to argue the value of those units. Although the elephant in the room is dynamic range. The pocket cams are about on par with the A7iii in that respect, which I shoot often, and the difference between that and the over 16 stops of my Dragon-X is insane. Aside from that, the RED shoots variable shutter angle/speed, so you can literally dial any speed you want even in fractions of frames (this is nice to maximize light gathering indoors while avoiding AC flickering), it shoots proxies in-camera, it mounts big batteries and has big fans to keep it cool...it's a different animal. Yeah, the 12k BM cam looks interesting. It's a super 35, right? I'd be interested to see how it does in low light because those pixels are REALLY dense. I bet there's some sort of AA filter or other digital trickery to keep the noise in check.
I wanna the Red Komodo just for the design!!!! :-)
I heard that there is a monitor that can control komodo wirelessly. It seems to be specially made for komodo. Does anyone know?
Its brand seems to be called PORTKEYS, and its model seems to be BM5 WR. If you have used it, please tell me, how does it feel to use it with komodo?
I want to buy one and try it recently, thank you!
Global shutter doesnât get rid of motion blur btw. It just gets rid of jello
I don't think it'll be a cine camera for everyone, but it'll definitely be a consideration for those prosumers wanting to up their production value with an affordable cine camera.
The massive crop at 120p is a deal breaker for me
đ€·đżââïž
imagine vloging with a global shutter camera đđđ
How do I get my hands on the Komodo?! Iâve been following this and canât wait until they drop it.
Email and ask nicely to become an early customer. Very weird very red ;-)
@@randomgeocacher Wait really!? haha I mean it can't just be that easy... Also jarred's email remains a mystery lol
Kutrovski that what the interweb says and people who purchased it says thatâs how it worked. No joke. Itâs the cutest camera ever. I think the current ones are stormtrooper white and orange before that. Not sure what you get if you order today. I suspect they want to create a collectors editions feel to the early copies with the colors.
@@randomgeocacher Can't trust anything in the interweb. Do I just contact the RED team in general?
Kutrovski uh, maybe the red user forum knows. Otherwise if you google him thereâs a bunch of services claiming his e-mail is j****d(a)red.com so I guess itâs just jarred.land(a)red.com or jarred(a)red.com. Hey let me know if that works out for you and what color you get :)
The exteremes of the shirt would have held up with a better camera than the R. This is an interesting camera, but the only reason it has a chance is they have the patent on internal RAW.
Isn't this still in beta?
Great
EOS R is damn near close (if not better lol). Plus it can still take photos and have flippy screen
