The Tumbler has a nice weight to it, I forgot to mention in the video. It feels very solid in use. The Tumbler system is pretty intuitive to use. There are a few short comings, and I touch base with some of these, in the video. Many kitchen knives, in today's homes, have been in use for years. In that time, I think, most go unsharpened. This leads to severely damaged, flat edges. That amounts to a lot of grinding. With having more grit options, this could be mitigated easily. Making several tumblers, with different grits, would be an ideal scenario. Perhaps an extra coarse/coarse, and fine/extra fine. Add that along with the steel, and a leather disc tumbler. This could be a 3 piece set, or even make it modular, so the discs can be changed. Many options to think about, and brainstorm. I am also curious how well it will work, against a hollow ground knife. I have not tried it so far, but I expect like many clamping systems, this is going be a problem. As it is, for someone who can not sharpen, and is just looking to get an edge on a knife, the product will accomplish it. Just know the basics of knife sharpening (developing a burr across the entire edge, before switching sides) and you will not have any difficulties.

The life of the diamond is the life of the investment. Replacements would make it all worthwhile.
Jef. Thorough video...helpful for me and guessing for many. THANKS.
Glad it was helpful!
Pretty interesting invention. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for checking it out 👍
Jeff I use the jumbo sharpies and cut a wedge in the felt tip so I get the edge. that edge up looks like a trip to the er waiting to happen.
Jef good video. Seems to be a decent product. Thanks for sharing brother 👊
Thanks for watching 👊
This is such a cool concept. Not rly my preferred method, but I love how simplistic this approach is. As long as you have a flat surface, you can get a sharp knife. I could see this being a great option for a lot of people. Always a good day when you release a video, all the best. :)
Same here. For folks unable to sharpen or who have no idea where to start, this is a solid concept
You can replace the grit with different grit sandpaper makes it more efficient
I have a suggestion for you. On the tips put the magnet block closer to the chip to hold it secure while you sharpen remember the tip is flexing more but the closer to the handles actually stiffer so it's going to flex less anyways
Great video Jeff, I was very impressed with one I tested, I think it's a great system for those that can't hold an angle or sharpen, think family members lol. The one I have also has aluminum oxide stones and a Ceramic with the diamond. Thanks for the video 👊
Yea i guess they sent it to you for testing? I had to buy one and got what was available 🤷♂️ they should have had those as an upgrade option
@@Jef I bought this one myself as well, the other one I have was sent by the company but it's a different brand. Same idea just different stones and it comes with a strop
@@NeevesKnives Different brand ah. That would explain it. Wouldn't make sense to have other options like that, and not have a way to purchase them. Guess we shall see if 'Tumbler' takes the hint, and does some more development. For a home cook with no experience sharpening, this is a home run.
@@Jef yeah the other one is Horl
@@NeevesKnives i think horl is the original? And others have copied them? I might be wrong though
interesting gadget. thanks for posting.
You bet 👊
Good Video, the points if improvement you suggest are captured in the Horl 2 which is the original design of this sharpener. You can buy finer grit stones for it 3000 and 6000. It's fairly expensive with the additional grit stones but really high quality and very well made.
Thanks for the heads up 👍
for a relatively cheap and very easy to use knife sharpener I think this sharpener is great. especially for those that don't have a great idea of angles or patience to learn learn a whetstone method. I have also found the pull through sharpeners to just feel janky.
Is the tumbler perfect. hell no. but, does it do a good job yes.
personally, I found 5 minutes a side does a solid job of getting the knife nice and sharp correction. nice and Sharp
"Is the tumbler perfect. hell no. but, does it do a good job yes."
EXACTLY! You nailed it. For those who can not, or do not want to learn, this is a solid, easy choice
It seems like a pretty nifty system. And fairly fool-proof. It's the kind of thing that, when you see it, it makes you wonder why it hadn't been thought of sooner. But i guess a lot of good ideas are like that
Exactly. Seeing this i could slap myself. I have a skateboard idea that i really need to come to fruition before somebody beats me to it. lol. If ya know anyone in the industry send em my way 😜
@@Jef Try Tim Poole from CZcams, he's a skater, and looking for good ideas.
@@jc2557 you got a link to his youtube? all i keep pulling up is some pseudo reporter type. unless that is him?
@@Jef Hi Jef, sure, here is a link to his channel. He is a growing social news guy whose hobby is skating, he was just recently saying he was opening a skateboard company and looking for stuff, worth a shot, cheers for your great vid's. czcams.com/video/DMqjglOTp3k/video.html&ab_channel=TimcastIRL
I guess i had the right guy after all 🙏
Thanks for the info. I will try reaching out to
him
That 80 grit stone was painful to watch hahah 🔪 🪨
😂
Yea it isn’t for the faint of heart
As a lot of people have mentioned, this is a knock off of the Horl, which is now in its second iteration, Horl 2. The Horl 2 is currently US $189 and comes with a 400 grit diamond disc and a 1000 grit ceramic disc. Horl has a 3000 grit and 6000 grit discs that are an additional $55 each, or you can buy a set that contains the 3000, 6000 and a leather strop for $139. The Tumbler is $129, but is currently on sale for $98 (as of the date this was written 7/20/2023). would love to see a comparison of the Horl 2 with the 400 and 1000 grit disc compared to the Tumbler.
My buddy just got the horl. I plan to check em out together when he is done learning it
I think this is a better device for rather than weak angle holders and "can't get rights". I can sharpen with whetstones, WMD thing, Spyderco sticks, and can strop. It would be nice to pull them out of your desk, have a perfect degree, roll up the horl, in a perfect line, and be done in a minute or two. I'm trying to see how this works with pocket knives.
Yes plenty could benefit from this device. I still haven’t tried a pocket knife yet. I’m in the middle of a move but once I’m settled i plan to record a video with a pocket knife and a hollow grind. I think both are going to present challenges, but it should still work
We have a company called Horl that sells this exact thing here in germany. They offer a variant that has different grits. It's SUPER expensive though, like almost 200€, I could buy a basic KME for that money.
This one came in at $98. Not terrible but a lil pricey for what you get
As far as I know the Horl is the original and the tumblr a knockof.
Thanks for sharing this one Jef:)
Thanks for checking it out 👊
Simplicity wins over both learned skill and technology! Super little device. It would be even better if the angle was adjustable on magnet side.
Yea that would be a clever idea. 👍
What's it like with a filleting knife with a fixable thin blade. For fishing?
One of the stiffer versions you could probably just place your finger behind to give support and be fine. Obviously you will have to raise the knife high enough to avoid the wood lip so the diamond makes contact. I super thin and flexible one may not be as easy. Not sure but using light pressure, you could probably make it work. Just be time consuming.
Seems mostly for kitchen knives. What do you think?
👍Cheers
I’d agree with that. I’ll try out with a pocket knife though, just to see. I’m sure I’ll record it 😁
Does the magnet leave marks on the blade?
Not yet. It may, however, if there is swarf built up, and stuck on the magnet. It is easily remedied by applying tape to the knife.
I have a Work Sharp that I love, but I’m very tempted to get one of these for sharpening kitchen knifes quickly. I think I may pull the trigger tonight and order one!
Also, I keep seeing these posts about the Horl. I’m not sure what supposedly makes that a better sharpener, but at that price point, I just can’t afford it. The Tumbler is much more affordable.
Go with what you think is best and dont let anyone else sway your opinion. If money is the main factor then by all means go with most affordable. I’ve still never seen the horl version.
This sharpener seems to be identical to the Horl sharpener except for minor variations in the finish. It seem like it has been forced off the market, perhaps by threat of a lawsuit by Horl . An interesting theory is that it was a marketing play by Horl to create more interest for their product. If that was their plan, it seems to be working.
What do you mean forced off the market? Tumbler is still posting Social Media content and the website still has preorder sales going through.
@@Jef I kept finding sites that linked back to Norl. Are you sure you could buy them on the site you saw?
@@davefoc The link is in the description. Not sure what site you are visiting
www.tumblerware.com/
@@Jef Hi Jet, thanks for the responses. I saw that site but I noticed that you had to pre-order it. I haven't found a large retailer selling it. But you very well might be right and the thing is truly for sale or will be for sale when they have them available again. For sure it is a lot cheaper than the Hortl version assuming you can buy it.
@@davefoc I had to preorder mine. Took approx a month to arrive, although I have heard there were some shipping problems at one time. You can always email and inquire on wait queues.
Does it work for smaller pocket knifes like Microtechs ?
I am still trying to find my system so unable to truly answer this. I dont see why it would not. The magnet is strong enough to hold them in the correct position. Perhaps marking where they are held, with a sharpie, might be helpful.

I seen this and by design I knew it had to work decently but I'm shocked.
Awesome. Always nice to be surprised by something when you have no expectations 😁👍
Grit is 2000, I confirmed with company. Mine is coming this week and want to see how it works as well.
No way is that a 2000 grit.
How about regular Benchmade knives
I still havent tried a pocket knife. Ill see if i can record that this weekend. Any benchmade model in particular?
@@Jef Benchmade Phaeton & bugout
I’ll try to make a video of it this weekend. I don’t have a phaeton, but plenty of Bugout’s
@@Jef Thank You
I haven’t forgot you. I just can’t find the damn tumbler. We packed up and moved and i haven’t been able to locate it since. Soon as i do i plan to get this done 😕
that block needs to be twice the width
I agree. It wouldnt be hard to fashion your own. Just cut what angle ya want and glue some rare earth magnets to it.
Looks like a decen product. i think horl is the original? And others have copied them? I might be wrong though.
Also i se problem with tall knives the roller wont up to the edge so you need to build a base under neath it
Also slim knives like pairing or pettys also maybe isnt the easiest?
But normal knives looks okay.
Yup. Those particular knives will have issues.
@@Jef jupp. But i see the ease of use. Beats draw trough sharpening devices for sure
I have seen videos where they put a block of wood on the table to raise the tumbler up for larger knives
Tormek is the best
Tormek is also way more expensive
Lol this is Horl sharpening system but worse.
Your the second or third person to mention them. They maybe better, but tumbler has a wider social media footprint. Ive never heard of horl, till i made this video and folks made comments 🤷♂️
They really should get their name out there more. Ive yet to check into them but its on my radar
@@Jef Tumbler has zero social media footprint, all they have is paid followers.
@@SonicDeluxx 🤷♂ perhaps but i see their ads everywhere on ig. i haven't even heard of horl till i made this video. paid or not, they are getting their product in front of people.
p̲r̲o̲m̲o̲s̲m̲ 😄
They stole the design from HORL, this is a knock off or the original.
You are about the tenth person to state this. 😁
This is a knock off stolen from the creator in Germany.
so everyone keeps telling me. I never heard of them till i made this video
Do you buy products of Amazon? Then you almost certainly support the same thing but worse due to the scale they do it on. I always try to support the oem but for what it is horl is stupidly over priced. $200 for a magnet, block of wood, and a soup can is insane and tumbler usa is still pricey at $100. They priced themselves out of the market, they could easily spin up a generic lesser quality one for $75 and win the market but they wont.
@@WillBilly. Support what?
Overpriced
