See, this is why I respect Robert Plant doing his folky thing so much. People age and voices change, and there's nothing wrong with reeling it in and pivoting to something that suits you better. Axl is forever chasing his glory days rather than doing something new that would perhaps work better. I suppose that's easier said than done when there's a massive touring machine to be fed, but it makes me kind of sad.

Axl needs to retire the Mickey Mouse falsetto and embrace his natural baritone. I saw GnR a couple of years back, the day after he messed up his voice at another show. He went up on stage and said something like "now you will witness the power of a true baritone", and proceeded to sing the classics in his natural low voice. He sounded awesome. I think at this point in his career it's a choice between trying to hit the high notes of his heyday with a powerless falsetto, or going low but maintaining the power and aggression he was known for.

    • @nedim_guitar

Was at the Hollywood Bowl gig--they were just feeling there way thru this, which is expected as it is their first time playing it live. However, during the rest of the show (which one can see on youtube--the whole show) Axl was amazing! By far his best vocal performance in over four years. I mean he went for it and landed on everything. They played many deep cuts including Anything Goes, Reckless Life, Locomotive, The Blues, etc. His range, for a 62 year old playing one of the most difficult catalogs to sing in hard rock, was fucking amazing. Even more anazing was his great attitude, and charisma. The whole band were on fire, and brilliant. The haters online really need to dial it back and be thankful and appreciate a legendary band road testimg a new song, taking a chance and not settling or being happy just kicking out the classics. They still, like the Stones, have much to offer! Long live GNF'R!!! Amazing spirit and talent!!!

I recall Axl saying he painted himself into a corner the way he recorded vocals for You Could Be Mine. I'd argue the same when he recorded the vocals during those Chinese Democracy sessions, extremely powerful highs and unfortunately the rest of these songs are now dropping out when it will be much more taxing vocally for an older Rose to get to that par in a live setting, which is difficult at any age. That said, I'm delighted Axl is now releasing music and hopefully will get a follow up to Chinese sooner rather than later (preferably the material that was intended for CDII that has been completed for decades). Will look forward to your review on Monsters when it drops! Much more my jam.

If they got him back and if Izzy, Duff, Slash, and Axl got in a room they'd hammer it out and it would sound like old school gunners. Shit even just pay Izzy to write some riffs since he doesn't want to tour anymore with them. People think that bands are all the front men and they do everything when in reality like Lars Ulrich, not the best drummer, but absolutely good on the business side of things and he was a big part in getting them to continue on after Cliff passed away. That's why Lars has a song writing credit on every song even though he's just the drummer. I mean really they got it now where it's so "unband like". James does all the rhythms, Kirk comes in and Lars helps him with his solos, and rob comes in to record his bass. They might all jam on it but James and Lars are the first guys to get a song going.

I was at the Bowl show where they premiered it, I enjoyed the weirdness and darkness of it. I think Axl said something humorously about how they might fall on their face. As you can see from the video, Slash seemed to be really into it, and relived to be playing something 'new'. I think the song is outside Axl's current range, but big deal, at least he tried, he's human. Better than lip syncing. In my opinion, Slash's greatness as a performer and artist more than makes up for any deficiencies.

However, I have learnt from you that recordings made on phones or played through phones can suffer from compression. I watched GNR on tv from Glastonbury, and the sound was not good, yet when I saw them a few days later in Hyde Park, London they were truly magnificent, and the sound was without fault. That said, there are a small number of GNR songs that don’t grab me, and maybe this is one. As always, I appreciate your openhearted reviews.

The thing is with Axl unfortunately is that he still has a great voice BUT he can’t maintain it a whole three hour show. I’ve seen them twice since the reunion and he always sounds killer at the start but as they get later into the set he starts to squeal a bit! And I don’t mind it. He’s in his 60s now. His voice was never gonna stay in top form at that age with how it is!! This was probably later in the set so he wasn’t in top form. Hopefully the studio version sounds better and I bet it will!!

Its hard to pull off epic songs like this live. If you can listen through this poor quality of the phone recording you can hear what this song is supposed to be. If you are looking for more Appetite for Destruction from Axl, the truth is that has not been GnR longer than it has been. If you like the Illusion style to present style GnR I promise this song will be incredible in a full studio recording. There is some great stuff happening here harmonically and dynamically! Maybe not the sleazy rock that some were looking for, but if you want a new song like Estranged or November rain this is absolutely like that...or even something like The Garden...underrated song in my books.

Im pretty sure everyone accepts that Axl isnt in his prime. But what people cant appreciate is that his style of singing is A) extremely difficult and B) quite painful and taxing on the vocal chords. Personally, I sang in a somewhat similar fashion for several years, and it is something that takes constant practice and physical training. Also know that as you age, it takes the body much longer to recover.
Of all singers out there, Axl deserves not only forgiveness if he misses a note, but also credit for the fact that he's got the balls to get up there and give it to us still. I have a theory that what made Guns N' Roses is what's killing them. When they emerged it was like an explosion of disobedience. They refused continually to hear any argument that might help them avoid bad ideas. The original art of the debut, their rejection of workaday hair metal schtick, the offensive material on Lies, the bloat of the November Rain video, Axl's booty shorts, the 15 years between albums... I'm sure everyone around them was driven completely mad, but they could pull it off. Now they're out in rough seas and won't pick up the goddamn radio for some direction. I pity the video wall designer trying to understand why he's animating a crocodile swimming through magenta fluid for a song called "The General." Yeah, they'll sell tickets to play hits. Guns n roses were great when Steven was in the band and to be fair use your illusion 1 and 2 was also incredible but after that they went seriously down hill. bring back Steven Adler 😂. Yes im a real fan I have their tattoos and saw them live back in the day many times.

Agree! Steven had a natural swing and groove which was a significant piece of their original magic, imo.

I loved lies and I loved appetite upon their releases and still do, but the subsequent albums that some of my friends were raving about, I just didn't really take to them . I still remember being disappointed when illusion came out, and the discussions about it with friends who loved GnR lol. I'd have liked a few more amazing albums before they ascended up themselves but.....

I saw GNR in 2017 in St. Louis, and I had a great time. Axl sounded great and I've always loved Duff and Slash was amazing. I was hoping I'd get to see Sebastian Bach do My Michelle with them, but I didn't. I think maybe Axl was just having an off day in this video? I havent watched much from them recently but thats a pretty big departure from what I witnessed in STL.

I think Izzy was a more important ingredient than he's given credit for. Even with Slash back, there's something missing.

GnR have been tight, happy & very successful. No one is taking anything away from Izzy, but they do not need him, just as Izzy does not need GnR.

@@dave-jk6en the Mickey mouse saying was used for his 2012-2014 performances and again in 2018-2021, it's not really mickey its clean with power behind it the reason it was called mickey was because he was always sounding out of air when he was singing. just a fun fact for you :)

A very well known concert promoter once told me that one third of the people are there for the event of it, a third are there so they can say they were there, and a third are there because of the music.

When you bring up the G-sharp its another exyension of modality through the scale G-mixolydian flat 2 flat 6 wich is a modal scale common in jazz. I'm pretty sure Slash has some awareness of this. He uses this scale in the solo on Sweet Child of mine.
