Eddie Murphy returns as Axel Foley in an 80s revival sequel that refreshingly opts out of trading on nostalgia reverence in favor of just delivering a solid entry in a franchise.

I begin to think that Bob does not entirely approve of how Netflix does business.
Stop reading so much into it. That is just your interpretation.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah, that’s the vibe I’m getting. I wonder if he’ll ever address the issue directly.
I need a Big Picture tirade about it yesterday.
What are the most despicable things they’ve done?
I’m glad I’m not the only one to thinks of Clerks when someone talks about Judge Reinhold
Show some respect for Judge Reinhold!
It's alright, it's more laughs than i got in Head Office
As a lifelong Detroit resident who grew up in the 80s, Beverley Hills Cop is the best copaganda franchise of all time 🔥🔥🔥
I love that the Beverley Hills police chief in the first two movies was Ronny Cox and Axel's chief back in Detroit was...an actual Detroit PD chief.
Robocop sheds a tear...😅
@@HandofOmega isn't Robocop more of a commentary on late stage capitalism?
@@HandofOmega I wouldn't necesserily count Robocop as copaganda because they're more a private security force for OCP and Murphy does his own thing. Also, while the first one is a masterpiece, the sequels are trash. Beverly Hills Cop is a much more consistent franchise.
@@majinvegeta6364 Stories can do more than one thing at a time! Whether private or public, Murphy is still presented as a "Heroic Police Officer", worthy of admiration and emulation, so I'd say it counts...It's true that the franchise is not as consistently good, but OTOH, as the initial comments here are about Detroit, BHC's stories are not actually SET in Detroit, unlike Robocop (I'm from the D, too, btw...went to Detroit Northern in the late 80s, Go Jayhawks!).
It’s been 32 years since the last Beverly Hills movie, so it does make sense that Axel would have a daughter.
The best form of nostalgia-baiting. 'Hey, you remember thing? Here's more of it because we think you want that.'
its why they made a bunch of Columbo
If you really want to feel old, remember the first film is now 40 years old. (1984)
No wonder I never heard of it.
@@XzoahXI got my nephew to watch it and he enjoyed it
I missed Axel's iconic laugh but im glad they didn't use cgi or AI to try and mimic it and just had him smile.
I missed something...can Eddie no longer physically do the laugh or something?
@@kereymckenna4611he’s stopped doing it intentionally. Apparently it’s because he got self conscious that EVERYONES eddy murphy impression was just the laugh
it was aight, it just did the Beverly hills cop movie thing, and that's enough for a Beverly hills cop movie.
Always enjoy a Clerks: The Animated Series reference!
Bob mines a lot of relevant clips from just that one episode!
Why are we walking like this?
OMG Bear is driving! How can that be?
Clerks the Animated series in my mind is peak Kevin Smith. It was one of the few tines where he was forced out of his dick and fart jokes bubble and really stepped-up his game.
The add about Netflix. Chef's Kiss.
God!
What an ending!
and with a cold too.
Bob you deserve two thumbs up.
👍👍
Joseph Gordon Levitt is a great talent, he's a type of comedian we just don't get as often in the US. It's hard for me to put my finger on what makes him funny, but he does a great job of matching the energy of scene
also: damn, I think netflix is the reason I watch fewer movies. maybe it's life getting in the way now that I'm an adult, but also I never feel like I want to go see a movie because I can just stream it. But I also might not stream it, because it's not as good as going to the movies.
Interesting tidbit Bob. The electronic version of the main theme song is called "Axel F". That's the name. I think that's part of the reason for the title, catchy theme song, catchy title.
Dolomite was another recent(ish) movie with Eddie Murphy in a lead role. Great acting, the film captured a feeling of putting together a film on a shoe-string budget, and there were these movie premiere scenes toward the end of the movie that feel like a snapshot in time of really fancy downtown movie theaters in decline, that hadn't yet been overtaken by suburban multiplexes.
I just saw this last night. I liked it.
It didn't have to be jaw-droppingly amazing, because I loved the original so much that "more of the same" amped up with a little more action and daddy-daughter drama is enough for me.
It's a shame the old crew gets so little air time, but Rosewood, Taggart, and Serge steal the scenes they're in. Hopefully the new cast can help transition us into more sequels.
Dayum. Bob ain't messin around. Go get em tiger!
I thought while watching this why dont they do a Die Hard, and than i got sad. Both because of the Die Hard sequels and than with Bruce Willis's situation.
I know. Say what you will about Bruce, it's really sad that this is where things are now.
It's sad for sure but did you really want to see a 70 year old John McClane running around doing the kind of ridiculous shit he was doing in the last couple of terrible Die Hard movies again?
My wife and I watched this on Friday night and within seconds were transported back to our halcyon youths watching the originals on VHS. It really was the whole package, and as I've told a bunch of people since 'two hours well spent'.
What's especially nice is JGL, like us, grew up watching the originals and now he gets to play in that sandbox.
I was hoping for a Clerks Judge Reinhold clip.
My big takeaway from this review is that I really need to give Clerks: The Animated Series a rewatch before I die.
The Clerks: the animated series reverence, did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
Did you clap?
@@mabusestestament Not until the Mock Trial.
It's cute that they actually did some meta commentary. At some point, Axel says something along the lines of "the third one wasn't that great" (i saw it a few days ago, can't remember the exact context) and i was like "i see what you did there"
It's Gordon-Levitt's characer that has his files on hand and goes "That wasn't your finest hour".
@@ChristianEwald yes!! Thank you
I'm surprised this is going direct to Netflix, I thought they'd try a small theater release
Netflix generally doesn’t do that because they see movie theaters as their competitors and they would like to see movie theaters gone completely. They only give their movies a short theatrical release if they think they might get a best movie etc. academy award nomination.
I like that you can read this movies as "memberberries are nice, but they make you stuck in some shit you have to move on from a little somehow."
I'm glad the villain is *supposed* to be obvious because I thought it was supposed to be a slow reveal and the trailer spoiled it.
So a sick moviebob is a violent moviebob
Lol, loved the dig at Netflix crescendo at the end. xD
Knew I could count on Bob for a Clerks Animated reference
I'll finally get a chance to truly assess whether I'm the lone BHC3 fan on the planet because I genuinely liked it or just because it was the last one we got.
I genuinely enjoyed it too. No, it isn’t as good as the first two but it was still a fun movie.
I would have been disappointed if that clip from Clerks: TAS wasn't in this review.
Nice drop at the end Bob.
I found it very surprising seeing "Shooter" Mgcavin XD
Just want to mention that the cast is really good. Bacon seems to enjoy himself, Paige and Gordon-Levitt indeed have chemistry and pull off what they are given by the script really well. Solid movie. I was surprised.
Random unexpected Clerks: the Animated Series insert! Love it!
Thanks for the review; I was curious about this.
love the ending
My dad loved Beverly Hills cop. So I saw it all
Well played, Clerks.
/slowclap
The JGL part did the notification and I had to rewind back to it to make sure he didn't do anything weird.
I've heard more than a few people complain about it being over the top. Happy to see a positive review. Here's to hoping it gets a proper physical release outside of Netflix's horrible levels of compression.
Netflix is Netflix. It ain't beyond reproach, but nobody's The Evil Empire here. Netflix still put out "Nimona" where Disney would have tossed it away after scrapping Blue Sky Studios after the Fox merger. And "Nimona" got an Oscar nod.
Missed the bit about cinema going? 6:59 - Netflix isn't anything to do with the movie going experience, since they'd deerly like cinema theatres to go away, along with physical media.
I like that movie cause it’s actually radically oriented and not some milquetoast liberalism
@@rog2224 "Wish in one hand, shit in the other. See which gets full first."
Solid Clerks TAS drop in. 10/10.
Millennial Beverly Hills Cop was the Rush Hour series.
Comparing this series to Alien actually makes me wanna check it out, lol. I love that each Alien movie is different/interesting in their own way!
That basic description of the series gave me serious "Demolition Man" vibes...same thing, only separated by Time instead of Geography!
With this and "Dolemite Is My Name", Eddie Murphy is making a very good, low-key comeback.
Ooh, ooh. Now The Golden Child!
This video gets a like for the very end. Good work Bob.
I wonder how many people will mistake the opening theme for the Crazy Frog video...
Wait, there was a THIRD one??
Haven’t seen any of these. Are they any good?
Loved the final sentence there Bob.
The main criticism of this film I've seen is character based. How it's x number of years later but Axel is still just 'a cop', no progress made/changes at all. So what has he been doing all this time?
I think this was about as good of a film as it possibly could have been. Given how many of these films turn out it was a pleasant surprise!
Catch it on DVD. Got it!
Weirdly enough I only remember the third clearly enough but I was indeed a kid when I saw it on TV so I was probably the target audience.
Fun, quick review for a fun, quick movie.
Ramble on, Bob
Thank you Bob funny and informative as always.
I recall the second film being the first one, only directed by Tony Scott.
I remember the second one being really good...except for the moments of unrepentant misogyny. It felt like the script writer or director had recently gone through a rough divorce.
The title makes me think that the song Axel F has surpassed Beverly Hills Cop in name recognition. I hope it gets some time to shine, given the title. Even in the Clerks clip, the song is proud and center. The reason why Beverly Hills Cop 3 was not very good is because it was directed by John Landis, and he and Eddie Murphy severely hated each other. The defense attorney vs systemic corruption angle sounds interesting. Makes me wonder what they even needed the franchise for. 100% Agreed @ Netflix.
From one cold sufferer to another, I wish you a speedy recovery. Get well soon, Bob.
Well in any case, I'm glad you're back Eddie Murphy. Do we want him to voice Donkey one more time too?
Damn Eddie Murphy looks pretty good for his age!
It was good.
Damn Bob, don't sugar coat it, tell Netflix how you really feel.
"Axel... Don't go..."
I thought it was fine. I would have liked some more time with the core trio together. The dynamic with the daughter was also a bit lifeless. Feels like they could have tweaked that a bit.
Still holding out for Lethal Weapon 5…
Where was the Ax Elf?
I feel like a Netflix enabler just because I haven’t deleted it yet.
I hate Copaganda crap overall. They try to mitigate some of it with the daughter being a social worker but not really into the action cop hero.
Not sure your allowed to do a Clerks: The Animated Series interstitial with how you feel about Kevin Smith.
Haven't watched the show in awhile, huh? 😉
🍿🎥🎬📀📼🎦📽️🎞️
Anyone else get confused at "Hashtag Beverly Hills Cop Ax Elf", or was that just me?
Saw part 3 in the theatre when it came out and I remember being shocked by just how bad it was. I mean yeah I guess it was a kids movie and that was the problem. Everything great about the first 2 was gone except Murphy and it felt like he was hamstrung the entire time.
Why's he named after the Crazy Frog song? ;p
Time for Yet Another 48 hours
I never saw the third one, think I'll just skip a rewatch and go watch this.
📺
I always feel weird when people talk about Beverly Hills Cop because as a millennial I've only seen 3 (as a small child), loved it (as a small child), and all anyone seems to have to say about the series is how bad 3 was.
CodaRantBob still got juice. Get well soon
Slightly spaced out there and thought you were saying the first Alien movie was just a comedy.
Black cop showing white policemen that they are too soft on crime? Sheesh
I never bought Eddie Murphy's PG turn.
No one can give me a reason Netflix is any worse than any big company that people hate.
BHC 3 was 1994
2:20 I always hate this kind of talk, like young people only watched new movies. I was born in 96 and I watched those movies.... mainly because they had the guy from Shrek and The Haunted Mansion was in them. But TBS delivered.
Hey, you can say I’m wrong, but I thought the third movie was hilarious.
I'd have to disagree about the score on this one - I'd say it was more 6/10
Does bob have a video criticizing Netflix? I am unfamiliar with what makes them terrible beyond the usual megacorp stuff.
They're a big reason movie theatres are dying, e.g. why wasn't this one released into theatres at a time when they're all starving for films to screen and people actually want to watch things in a theatre now?
@@digitaljanusso a quick scan of the internet. This movie has been in development hell since the mid 1990s. Netflix brought the rights from Paramount ( for this and a possible second movie ) in 2019. That was 5 years ago. Brave of anyone to think that after Paramount sat on the property for about 25 years that , just as cinemas starving for films to screen, they would make this movie even if they had not sold the rights. They certainly did not want to in 2019. My interpretation of events is that this movie would not exist without Netflix. And yes Netflix’s business model is streaming , but they spent the money making the movie they get to choose how to make the money back.
@@digitaljanus
Reason 1: Netflix sees movie theaters as their competitors and wants to see them gone.
Reason 2: the movie would’ve flopped in theaters.
The movie going experience is kids on their phones making lots of noise throughout the whole film.
I'll stick with Netflix at least you can watch the film.
Huh.
So what exactly makes Netflix such a horrible company?
Eddie Murphy > Will Smith
BC AF ha ha ha
Moviebob did a decent job with the review and recap, then blows it in the end with his mini rant on Netflix. I'm no Netflix fan, but we don't care what your personal thoughts are social political issues. Why do modern day journos think we care what their activism virtue signaling talking points are? I just came for a movie review. Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go and the rest can't stop you from enjoying the theater if none of us were subscribed. Yet here we are...
You mean besides trying top do the best to destroy the theater
Hey FJ, this isnt really the kind of game you can just unlock a bunch of stuff through dying over and over. The game will make you engage with the mechanics, so feel free to take your time and learn how stuff works.
I feel like at this point moviebob being salty about the 2016 ghostbusters film and every one since then has to be a free space on some sort of Moviebob bingo card
*sheds a single gray tear, lip quivering from emotion, at a crumpled-up Twinkie wrapper*
I'd find this review more convincing if you hadn't praised 1 and 2. Much like the "Lethal Weapon" franchise, this series has not produced a single good entry.
good to see you reviewing movies that just came out, instead of holding up some random film like a kid on show and tell day
Nice to see you make a negative comment on this channel for the 14th time
@@cryssnail It's nice that TRappy has a way to get past his ED that doesn't involve hitting a family member.
