WTF Happened to Beverly Hills Cop III?

  • After decades in development, Beverly Hills Cop 4, which is officially titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, is finally in production. Netflix is setting this up to be one of their big blockbusters for 2023, which is only fitting considering that the first Beverly Hills Cop was the biggest movie of 1984 (beating Ghostbusters at the box office), while Beverly Hills Cop 2 was another major hit, ranking in the top 3 movies of 1987. But what about Beverly Hills Cop 3? Not only was that movie not a box office hit, but it effectively ended the franchise for nearly thirty years. It was so bad that many thought it was the final nail in the coffin of Eddie Murphy’s career, only for the star to rebound in a big way two years later with The Nutty Professor.
    So WTF Happened to Beverly Hills Cop III? Plenty, with the behind-the-scenes shakeup radically changing the tone of what then had been a slick, action-packed series of urban action flicks/comedies. Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer were no longer involved, and with them went the smooth action movie sheen, with John Landis the unlikely choice to direct the third instalment, which would be set at a DisneyWorld knockoff called Wonder World. By the time an orchestral version of the Axel F Theme started, audiences knew they were in trouble. The film tanked brutally, beaten by The Flintstones at the memorial day 1995 box office.
    In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, written by Brad Hamerly, narrated by Mathew Plale and edited by Kier Gomes, we go into everything that went awry with this franchise killing misfire.
    Do you think Beverly Hills Cop III is as bad as its reputation suggests? Let us know in the comments!

    The problem with BH3 was it was missing the complete 3 Amigos. Foley, Rosewood and Taggart. Rosewood and Taggart were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Taggart it felt weird. It's like having the A-Team without Murdock.

    I worked on the movie. The cast and crew actually had a lot of fun making it. The big surprise for me was how professional Eddie was. Completely different than when I was on set of 48Hrs 2. Eddie had come a long way once he wasn't the golden boy anymore. He straightened out his act (at least on set). The general consensuses once the film was released was an overall pleasant experience. Not great, but not terrible either.

    • @Wheatsolo
      @Wheatsolo Před rokem +3

      I think the film has some huge issues but so does BHC1. The great thing about BHC2 is the villain seems to generally operate in ways that make sense. This feature is absent from BCH1 and 3 (by the way, the villains in BHC3 do get better in the second half of the film almost the opposite of BHC1). BHC1 just took too long setting up the characters which is why I think BHC2 was a comfortable sequel.
      The loss of Taggart really hurt this film as they didn't set up the 'private police force' well. I know one of the major issues of this film was the script, and I wonder if they ever floated the idea of dropping a replacement for Taggart and spending more time with the love interest as a tsundere maybe.
      Anyway, youtube critics are stupid, and this film is not that much worse than the first. Trust me, there are trilogies where the third movie is WAY worse than this. This is just a popular theme that never died out and it's easy to create buzz around this yt title.

      BHC-3 1994 was flawed in my view because they waited way, way too long. 7+ years. Axel was older, leaner not quite the young hip cop anymore. The 3rd film should of been with a young Detroit PD or Bev Hills detective that he could play off of. Hector Alizazo 🎭 is great but way, miscast. 🤔 The Amusement Park story was lame.

    • @bizarroeddie1

      @McLarenMercedes Před 2 dny

      @@SumDumGy_formerly_Tim_WaldenI'd say that OP means that the original Beverly Hills Cop film was quintessentially 80's in its general outlook and tone. By 1994 Hollywood films had changed in tone and cop/buddy flicks were hitting a nadir as it had been overdone. They should have made the 3rd Beverly Hills Cop in 1989 or so for in 1994 it felt like a "dead franchise and a dead genre". Very few desired another Beverly Hills Cop in 1994 and what they got was a dud anyway. In 1994 films like The Lion King and Forrest Gump dominated the box office. Feelgood family films. You couldn't have made another Ghostbusters in 1994, nor another Karate Kid or Top Gun or Mad Max. But they tried to do another Beverly Hills Cop... Bad idea.

      I think you chose some very bad examples here for films they couldn’t have made in the 90s. They could have, they just didn’t. Instead, they did something even decades later and they worked just fine.

    I don't know why BHC2 got such low ratings. I absolutely LOVE that move and thought it had a lot of clever moments. Axel getting cash at various points in the film was particularly funny and clever. After borrowing Rosewood's bag of vitamins using them as a prop in the gun club, he gives Rosewood $20 he got from the receptionist to replace the vitamins. While tracking the armored truck from the robbery he finds a $50 bill and gives that to the valet, Chris Rock, at the Playboy mansion to park the cement truck. And finally he donates the $200 he got from Sidney Bernstein, played by Gilbert Gottfried, when the mayor says he's going to a charity event.
    The action was great, the comedy was on point and I loved the growth of Rosewood into a baby-faced psycho. The chemistry of Axel, Taggart and Rosewood was just as good as it was in the original.
    But yes, BHC3 was complete dogs***. I'd consider it inhumane torture to watch it again. As for the 4th movie, I kinda wish they just left it alone. I understand that Eddie wants to give the character a good send-off but based on the fact that he read the script for Coming 2 America and still went through it doesn't give me a lot of hope in his ability to discern what it takes to make a good movie. Coming 2 America is easily in the top 3 worst films of his career.

He needed the movie more than it needed to be made so he made off like a bandit when the studio should've been in the better negotiating position. After time and getting to know the others, it is clear that the true magic and greatness of the series is in the first film. But I cannot see how anyone can objectively find part 2 to be better than part 3. I mean c'mon!

    Having only just today binged though all of the original Beverly Hills Cop movies for the first time, I have to say that while the 3rd one wasn't what I would have expected I did find myself enjoying the basic premise of a family friendly Disney-esque amusement park being the cover for an underground criminal operation. That said I could definitely see how it effectively killed the franchise up until now if it was that much of a "jump-the-shark" for audiences and critics at the time, but it does seem to have developed new appreciation nowadays even if just as a much bigger guilty pleasure than the first two movies.
    I definitely did not expect to see George Lucas of all people make a random cameo in the film either.
