- Of all the actors who employ the “method acting” technique, none is more famous (or infamous) than the great Daniel Day-Lewis. In a surprising move, Day-Lewis, at the height of his popularity, opted to retire from acting following the completion of his film with Paul Thomas Anderson, The Phantom Thread. Many figured Day-Lewis was saying this as the result of a long and taxing shoot, but in the years since, it’s appeared that the actor has stuck to his guns, not appearing in a film since. Is this the end of Daniel Day-Lewis’ screen career? WTF Happened?
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we examine Daniel Day-Lewis’ legendary run, from his early triumph in My Left Foot to his North American breakthrough in a run of modern classics that include In the Name of the Father and Michael Mann’s The Last of the Mohicans. Interestingly, Day-Lewis has retired before, with him quitting acting for three years after The Boxer, only to be lured back into acting by Martin Scorsese and Gangs of New York. His Bill “The Butcher” became one of his most memorable creations and kicked off another spectacular run that included his triumphant turn as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. While some of his choices seem odd, such as the decision to act in the tepid musical Nine, shortly after Day-Lewis won his third Oscar for starring in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. If his retirement is permanent, he will leave behind an incredible legacy.

When you do an oscar nominated performance every 5/6 years and then you also won 3 oscars, I think he did the right to retire. He already did so many iconic legendary iconic performances
Agreed. He isn’t my favorite actor, that would probably be Gary Oldman or Val Kilmer (Tombstone, Willow, Real Genius, Kiss Kiss, Ban Bang) and Christian Bale (The Mechanist, Harsh Times, Equilibrium, American Psycho) when they were on a streak of good films before they lost their way.
But he’s 100% one of the best actors of all time and nobody could dispute that- he just had a number of flicks that didn’t appeal to me outside of like There Will be Blood, Gangs of New York and The Last of the Mohicans.

Daniel Day-Lewis may not be in movies anymore, but he had one of the best filmographies ever. There Will Be Blood, Gangs of New York, Lincoln, etc. There has never been a bad performance from him at all.

You can't mention DDL without mentioning his performance in "The Last of the Mohicans". That was his greatest performance, before many knew who he was. And in my opinion, one of, if not the best movie ever made. Too bad it was filmed in the 90's, with so many other great movies, it was overshadowed by so many other popular, but not as great flicks.
@@Battleborn357 It's a great film. And, like always, Daniel Day-Lewis does an excellent job. But I wouldn't say it's the best work in his career. It's really hard to choose one particular performance because DLL is so different in every role. He's a class apart from other actors! I wish I could have witnessed the rise of his stardom in 1985 - when he appeared as Cecil Vyse and Johnny Burfoot in "A Room with a View" and "My Beautiful Laundrette", respectively. Some people were convinced that those role were played by two different thespians. What a talent! What a range! What a commitment to the craft!
As for me, I personally admire his work as Christy Brown in "My Left Foot". It would be pretty deserving if someone claimed "My Left" Foot to be his greatest performance so far.
This one is hard to let go. I love There Will be Blood and Gangs of New York. When I first heard him speak as himself, I was floored at how gentle he seemed.
You can be sure that anyone who acted with Daniel Day-Lewis worked their ass off to give their best performances, too. He is that kind of leader.
You can't help but have incredible respect for a dude so dedicated for his craft. Amazing.
Not that he would have done it, but with his build and his range, he would have been an iconic Joker.
Now that you mention it, his look and acting in In the name of the Father reminds me so much of Joaquin Phoenix when playing Joker.

In 1989 I was a young man with long dark hair. I was working in a warehouse in England. I had seen My Left Foot on video and I was delighted that this actor - who I had never heard of - was nominated for an Oscar. 'Of course, he won't win,' I thought. Working in that warehouse I listened on BBC radio to who had won the Oscar for Best Male Actor. "YESSSSSS," I shouted when I heard Daniel had been rewarded.
I don't know why Brits don't seem to win enough Oscars? Is it a culture thing? We've had some of the best actors of all time.
To be fair, when he listened to Eminem to prepare for Gangs of New York each day, it was on a phonograph.
"The last of the Mohicans" is mostly remembered for his phenomenal music, soundtruck and locations. But was actually a great movie and a fun action adventure flick. And like always Daniel was excellent

It's a classic of its genre made by a legendary director.
When I played John Proctor in a community theater production of The Crucible, I unashamedly took direct inspiration from Daniel's portrayal. It took everything I could muster to even come close. He's one of the greatest of all time.
In Gangs of new york he was definitely one of the best bad guys in 2000s movies

I first watched it around 2010, and holy f*ck was I blown away by his performance.
The story was amazing and heartbreaking as well, but he encapsulated the whole persona of his character.
It made me feel so many emotions throughout the film, and not many can I say do that for me.

He may have not gotten to be in Pulp Fiction, but he STILL got his milkshake in the end.

Quite possibly the most masterful actor of our time, if not of all time. Daniel Day Lewis is absolutely extraordinary.
"Boxer" from 1997 is probably the most underrated movie of his career. Always liked but it got overshadowed by his others movies of the 2000s and early 90s like Gangs of new york, There will be blood, Lincoln, The age of innocence & In the name of the father. Always liked Boxer, great movie I recommend it

I've watched Phantom Thread just because he has in it and was not disappointed. He's hands down one of the greatest actors. I love his There will be blood performance as well as gangs of new york. Legend.
Yep, I watched Lincoln even though I despise biopics wholeheartedly, but if it's Day-Lewis as Lincoln, well... count me in. lol Wasn't disappointed either, would have voted for him any day, Civil War or not, 'twas worth it.

That's why he was ignoring his phone and mail, they had to physically take a copy of There Will Be Blood to his HOUSE, and were directed towards the pub up the street, which they invaded to beg him to read it. He had plenty enough money for life, never saught fame or celebrity. It took an amazing script and director to convince him to take another role, and he did it purely for the art of it. No doubt he by now regrets it - time spent away from one's children is always wasted, but perhaps he secured his grandchildren and great grandchildren's future by taking the job, so hopefully he won't regret it too much!
His performance in In the name of the father was amazing, I think it's one of his top 3 best movies.

Getting day Lewis for a role is guaranteeing funding. No matter the subject matter. The problem is getting him. He’s effectively quit acting it’d have be a role of a life time to get him interested. I just think he’s achieved what he wanted to achieve and wants to concentrate on other things in his life. More power to him. I doubt he even looks at scripts these days.

Gangs of New York is one of my all time favourites & I always knew Daniel was an amazing actor but had no idea he was such a beast that dedicated to his craft.

Day Lewis is probably the best actor of the last 50 years. Prime Brando maybe on the same level, but Daniel is something entirely different to 99% of todays acting professionals, and certainly far more skilled and talented than even the likes of Tom Hardy, Robert Duvall, Anthony Hopkins, et all.

This was a much needed update. What I found most interesting was I had just recently did research into bespoke shoemaking. It is a true art and there are only a few original people left that know how to do it the way it was done originally, which by the way, was for the war effort, before machinery. You literally have shoes exactly tailored to your feet, I mean by stepping into a blank piece of foam, to several try ons, to a final product. I know he spent time in Italy and I am going to assume that was where he picked up interest in learning. Either that or he had a pair made and either was shocked at the price, six to seven grand, and thought, ok, I’m not paying that again, I’ll just pay for an apprenticeship. Great update and I found a few movies in there I haven’t seen in which I would like to. I never knew he married Arthur Millers daughter either, big fan of AM…

What a great homage to a truly remarkable actor.
There are many method actors of merit but when I think of method actors he is the only one that comes to mind.
His performances are so powerful that he is a crucible that forges the actors around him to become better at their craft. Paul Dano is a great example of this. When I saw his performance as the Riddler I could see shades of Lewis.
His art will be missed, but I cannot think of anyone else who has elevated the craft of acting while delivering some of the most incredible performances of iconic characters in the 35 years.

Rediculous level of dedication to his craft it's inspiring
I believe him when he says he retired. Although, he is an artist and a human, therefore he cannot predict what will happen in his personal life. Say he reaches 73, realizing he no longer feels youth, he may seek out a script; or chances are a screenplay would present itself then to him.
In other words, the screenplay presented to Day-Lewis would need to parallel his transitional period, into the last phase of his life.

True story. To get to the emotional place, he gets to in clip 10:56, he remembered how he felt when Emilio Estevez cast Charlie Sheen in Men at Work instead of him.
He spent 12 years working for the new jersey department of sanitation to prepare for that role and then some dork hockey coach pulls the rug on him. It's shameful.

*One of the things that makes him such an incomparable actor is how little he actually respects acting.* He find's it all a little ridiculous himself, he is not pompous about his talent or the art he creates, he knows he is just 'play acting' and not solving world hunger. And I think this is why so many lesser and much smugger actors hate him haha
I don’t think it’s that he doesn’t respect acting, but more like he’s super aware of what he is. You can tell he loves acting and is endlessly passionate but yea I agree he doesn’t at all seem concerned about celebrity culture and idol worshipping - the man lives for his art and nothing else, eschewing the spotlight as much as possible. I love his approach to life and being an actor

The reason DDL turned down the role in Philadelphia was because he knew that he'd have to actually contract HIV and die from AIDS in order to play the part of Andrew Beckett.
There is this rare exclusivity about DDL that makes his mystique even more impressive. He's not in many films, he's brilliant and iconic in all of them, and oh by the way, he quit. It's like if Michael Jordan had stayed retired in 1993. Never played baseball, never came back, he just left the game and fucked off somewhere to go hunt pheasants or something.

There Will Be Blood for me was a perfect storm of talent. Paul Thomas Anderson ive followed since Hard Eight, his long time DP Robert Elswit was at his peak and Johnny greenwoood created the most unique score for it. Top it all off with DDL I'm sorta shocked it didn't win best picture.
It's better than No Country For Old Men, that's for sure.

Being from central Illinois all my life and an American history major , when the Lincoln movie came out I had high hopes . It was upsetting to me that they chose only one small part of his story to tell . They could have done so much more .
And they skewed the shit out of it to where it was almost lying...As a serious history buff the movie was so skewed it almost felt like propaganda. So much so that aside from Day-Lewis performance, I can't watch the movie.

Daniel Day will always be Newlen Archer ala The Age of Innocence. Also my favorite Scorsese film.
Regarding THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, the assumption that no one watches that movie is just plain wrong! That film is artistic genius. It’s not just about Daniel, it’s the cinematography, the visual choices, artwork, how Scorcese highlights small, seemingly insignificant objects under gorgeous lighting, the opening credits juxtaposed against black lace with hot house flowers blooming behind it. I watched that film for the 1st time at the Ziegfeld Theater in NYC on a very large screen from a balcony seat and it was breath taking. Many of us continue to watch that film, it is NOT a throw away by any means.
No disrespect to Mr.Hanks... but Mr.Day-Lewis would also crushed that movie Philadelphia....
