Today, we take a 'behind the scenes' look at how Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis came to work together, how the character was written by Anderson versus how he was developed by Day-Lewis, how Day-Lewis came up with Plainview’s iconic voice, how the costumes were chosen and much much more.

DDL raised something from Hell in this character that seemed so real, so authentic, that it appeared artless. I see Daniel Plainview everywhere these days. Once you see There Will Be Blood, it stays with you forever.

    • @davidlean1060

But he is also very funny as Plainview too, something even Day Lewis laughingly admits to in the Charlie Rose interview Tyler shows clips from. I know I was laughing at him during the 'give me the blood' scene. I swear Paul Dano almost breaks once or twice during those scenes too. It must have been an amazing experience to be playing opposite Day Lewis when he was in full flight like that.

You caught on quicker than me because I didn't realize until like the 3rd time watching it lol. In all fairness though it's not made super obvious that they're twins, but then again it would have been clunky if Eli said "good to meet you, I am Paul's identical twin" for dummies like me who couldn't figure it out on their own lol.

Good work. I was in the cast during the scene where he and his son try and enlist the support of the Signal Hill families, and I watched him do that famous speech about 8 or 9 times. It was in a small house built for the scene up in an area near Valencia, CA called "Mystery Mesa", and it was about 100 degrees inside; we shot it day for night, with the whole house covered with black cloth. We were all in wool, period clothing. It was glorious.

I LOVE and adore Clint Eastwood, my daughter bears his last name as her middle name. I just saw ‘The 15:17 to Paris’ & saw many amateurs (I believe)- like the general movie going audience, ones who DON’T dissect the who, when, or why- LOVING it, saying C.E. is ‘amazing- the man!’; I’d be interested to know your thoughts on his recent slump in film. I have many friends who are still sore about the chair incident. Full disclosure, I’m a liberal and overlook this, as I don’t believe it has anything to do with his work.
I’m excited to see more of your content! Katherine

That's because Anderson only used the first third of the book, mainly as a source for portraying the life of prospectors and aspiring oilmen at the turn of the 20th Century.
The main elements of this movie were based on the life of Edward Lawrence Doheny, a real oil tycoon who operated in the American West and Mexico during the period in which this film was set (At one point Doheny was even richer than JD Rockefeller). The similarities are too many to list, but just a few off the top:
*Edward Lawrence Doheny (ELD) starts off silver and gold mining with limited success; Daniel Plainview (DP) starts off mining for silver and gold with limited success.
*ELD strikes oil and provokes a petroleum boom in Southern California; DP strikes oil and sets off a petroleum boom in Southern California.
*ELD was rumored to have killed a man in Texas; DP kills a man posing as his brother (ie both men had a murderous rage in them).
*ELD sells a majority share of his company (Pan American Petroleum & Transport) to Standard Oil; DP sells a majority share of his company to Standard Oil.
*At the end of ELD's life there's a murder-suicide in his mansion; DP kills Eli in his mansion (which was ELD's actual mansion) at the end of the film.
Edward's son, Ned, was killed in a murder-suicide in real life (although not by Edward). Daniel kills Eli, who at that point in the movie was functioning as his surrogate son. This is a good example of how Anderson either portrayed actual events in ELD's life, or used certain aspects as inspiration and then added an original spin.
Margaret Leslie Davis wrote a book about ELD called The Dark Side of Fortune. Highly recommend that over Oil!.

Well, it's basically that people tend to want to manipulate things in their favor. I don't believe that people are so bad as much as they are self serving especially when there is money involved. Daniel didn't understand the desperation of people around him like the guy pretending to be his brother.

@cinematyler Thanks Tyler, I think this is a fantastic video.
I'd never thought of Daniel as count Dracula but you pointed out a whole heap of "blood as oil/oil as blood" references that make for a good argument.
DDL and PTA are both incredulously articulate and smart and it seems as if PTA isn't too hung up on controlling everything-the bit about him collaborating with Seymour-Hoffman and Jonny Greenwood, that's where I feel like PTA's writing style is so unique-it allows for that type of experimentation and it ends up being generative towards the characters and the film. I was reading the original screenplay for There Will Be Blood, and although the movie is pretty spot on in terms of how much it adheres to the script, the script is pretty bare when it comes to any detailing about Plainview's aesthetics or the sound of his voice or any of the things that he left up to Day Lewis to consider.
BUT! There's one part they didn't put in the movie about Daniel Plainview being impotent. In the screenplay, he admits it to Henry by the fire when the two of them are drunk. When I read that, it changed Plainview's motives in my mind-made me feel like his ambition and motivation were replacing his sex drive, or lack thereof. I'm glad it didn't make it into the movie, I think it would have caused us to figure him out too quickly.
The part about Day Lewis choosing the clothes for Plainview very carefully and how that allowed him to enter the world even more-that's such a beautiful thought that an actor was that concerned about the character's actions and motives that are outside the storyline.
I think these videos are fascinating and insightful and very helpful for someone who wants to make films. Tyler, as far as more videos on this movie, I'm curious about how the two parts that PTA has written for Daniel Day Lewis (Plainview and more recently Reynolds Woodcock) relate to something that Christoph Waltz had said about casting. He was talking to Jerry Seinfeld on Seinfeld' Netflix show and he had said there's no such thing as good acting, only good casting. Obviously this was in reference to his own performance as Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds, and the fact that I could literally not imagine anyone else to have carried out that role better than he did, I started to consider what he'd said. In his Charlie Rose interview, PTA says he originally wrote Dirk Diggler for Leo, and that his parts for Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore in Magnolia were written especially for them. To what extent do you think this shapes the characters in PTA's movies?

    • @CinemaTyler
      @CinemaTyler  Před 6 lety +1

Thanks! I read that bit about Plainview's impotence. It does explain his lack of interest in women, but it seems more interesting and makes more sense for his character if he isn't interested in women because he is fixated on his business. I wonder if they cut that bit specifically to keep some mystery there.
I totally think that casting is one of the most important aspects of the success of a performance. Although, I think the best examples of this are the productions that cast non-actors. I think Leo could have been successful as Dirk Diggler. What seems to make Day-Lewis so unique in PTA movies is that he is contributing to the writing of the character as well as performing them (more than it appears other PTA actors are doing).
