In Episode 22 of Making Apocalypse Now, we’ll talk about how Dennis Hopper’s own major artistic risk lead to career slump that Apocalypse Now would help fix, how Hopper would bring even more insanity to the production, the inspirations for the photojournalist character, and the story behind the Colby character that was cut from the movie-including the crazy death scene of Colby and the photojournalist that didn’t make it into the final film.

"American war to bring civilization to the ignorant millions"? (29:30) Huh?? That's the one clunky line in an otherwise stellar video script, CinemaTyler. JFK had seen the Soviets try to station nuclear weapons in communist Cuba. The fact that North Vietnam was now pushing communism into South Vietnam was another unwelcome expansion of a worldview anathema to democracy. You can criticize the USA all sorts of ways, but to reduce us to pompous do-gooders out to "Westernize" the world with bombs is not accurate, IMO. South Vietnam was our ally; we helped them. America took in hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the now-communist Vietnam after 1974. That tells you how they felt about their neighbors to the north.

Hopper has blue eyes, in Apocalypse Now! his eyes are grey and the pupils are pinned (contracted), a sure sign of opioid use. He was married to Michelle Phillips for only 8-days, she divorced him because of his “unnatural sexual demands”! He also allowed himself to be placed in a chair which was blown up with real dynamite! The stunt called, the Russian Dynamite Death Chair trick was the brainchild of stuntman Olie Anderson, who had learned of it from a drifter in the late 1950s. The stunt involves sitting in a chair with four sticks of real, deadly dynamite attached to the legs of the chair. According to an oral history from Anderson, only 60 percent dynamite is used in the course of the stunt. Once it is ignited the person in the chair is at the mercy of physics. The dynamite blows to the point of least resistance and you need to be in that area of least resistance so that it will blow away from you instead of into you. You have to roll yourself up into a tight ball, in the position you'd take on an airplane if you were about to crash. The chair is mainly cardboard as splintering wood could cause serious injuries. All the dynamite has to go off at the same time or it will blow your arm or leg off. The elements of risk is high! The actor obviously survived the blast.

The United States, Vietnam War killed over 3 million people, more than half of whom were Vietnamese civilians. They even used flamethrowers on whole families and villages. McNamara moron was a term that many officers and sergeants used to refer to low-IQ men and women who were taken into the armed forces under a special program devised by Robert McNamara. Their death toll in combat was appalling. [ Forrest Gump, wasn't joking ]. 10:00 total BULL BULL! How absolutely boring would every movie be (and unoriginal) if directors or producers just slapped some old 17th or 18th century orchestral work in it for music? If Kubrick believes that way for real, then we should expect all his movies to have classical pieces for music. Do they? I don't know but he sounds like a real well... I don't think I'd like Stanley too much. Hans Zimmer wasn't around to do his soundtrack. Nor John Williams. Nor any of the great movie music composers from the 70s onward. What if they just didn't use ANY music for that part and just let it be silent? Just like..... SPACE? Hey, talk about wanting your movie to reflect realism well, there you go. I do like the pairing of Also Spoke Z. with the opening. For me, I never heard that music UNTIL the movie so it seemed to fit well and that major/minor/major to 4 chord just sounds so majestic and huge. Kubrick could have made a bolder statement leaving out the music in the space shots instead of CAVING and feeling like people might zone out or not understand. Nothing to understand really. Shots of space vessels in... space.

If that fantastical nonsense was a reality, they all would have been eradicated within a few months of them colonizing the area. And moreover wouldn’t STILL BE tHERE to this day.
