How to Replace a Bathtub Spout | Home Plumbing Repair Video Series

  • This video will demonstrate how to remove and replace the bathtub spout. To replace your spout simply remove the spout, go to your local plumbing supply store and acquire a new replacement part and install it. Watch the video for a demonstration and special considerations. This will NOT fix a leaky faucet. If you have a dripping faucet then you need to replace the actual valve (the on/off hot/cold part). A leaky valve is a lot more involved and you would need a plumber.
    I replaced this faucet spout because it would not direct the water to my showerhead and it was old and ugly.

    A couple of rules for plumbing:
    1. Always do your work while the plumbing store is open.
    2. Always plug the drain while working because drains attract screws and other small pieces.
    Also, caulk around the spout from the 7 o'clock clockwise to the 5 o'clock position. Keep the caulk bead small.

      Leaving a little opening in the caulk at the bottom allows any water that makes its way into the interior of the spout a way to exit. Water sitting inside the spout will cause mold, corrosion, and other nastiness.

    This video helped me a lot! Thanks for doing this. One word of warning though. In my bathroom the geniuses who installed the plumbing in the original new house (1 year old house) cut a large hole for the copper tube to come through. I did not know that I had to basically caulk the opening shut before attaching the spout because if the diverter leaks then the water will run along the back of the copper tube and leak onto the ceiling. This is exactly what happened. So, make sure the hole through which the copper tube emerges is sealed shut.

    • @FROSTYLIFE
      @FROSTYLIFE  Před 5 lety +4

      Very good point. Thank you for pointing that out. The trim piece is not enough for keeping water out. Like you said, it must be sealed.

    • @erikehlert
      @erikehlert Před 5 lety +2

      so if water is running back towards the wall, along the bottom of the copper tube, and you seal the gap between the tube and the wall, where does the water go? Does water just sit in that chamber of the faucet, potentially damaging the wall over time, or is that a drain hole at the bottom of the faucet attachment, where the water can escape? Is there a better solution to stopping water from going backwards along that pipe? like maybe putting some sort of gasket around it?

    Thank you for the video but because a simple fix this should have been a 5 minute video. I get you guys try to stay on 1 video as long as possible but the viewer gets tired of watching someone drive to the store and hold up paperwork instructions etc.
    Because I'm busy I really love to have my videos short and sweet and to the point but I do thank you for your video. Have a nice day❣

    Trying this tomorrow, and will be picking up caulking as well, just in case! Thanks for the informative video. My converter hasn't worked since I bought my house 6 years ago and has essentially rusted shut to where only showers are possible, so i haven't been able to take a hot soak since then. I'll keep y'all posted

      Once you get the old one loose (I can be stubborn) then the rest of the task is pretty easy. Make sure you do not break any pipes. If it is really rusted badly then you might still need a plumber that has the right equipment to get it loose. I hope it goes well, let me know. There is nothing like a hot soak. I am not a bath type of guy, but after being in the lake and covered in sand and chilled from the lake water, the hot soak is the perfect remedy.

      @@FROSTYLIFE it worked! I didn't do any damage to the pipes, don't have a leak, and didn't blow up the house! (I'm not what you would consider "handy"). Thanks SO much for the video!!!!

    The following worked great in 8/2018: I sprayed some WD-40 on the rod of the diverter knob, then sprayed more inside the end of the spout on the rod and also on the rails of the diverter. Now the diverter works great, with I'd say 95% of the water being diverted to the shower head. No need to buy Allen wrenches, buy a new spout, or hire a plumber.

      @patrickdrier4707 Před 2 lety

      I will have to try that WD-40 trick. My diverted sprays a lot of water that is supposed to go to shower head. If I do decide to replace the whole unit on my next week day off atleast I now know it not as big of a job as one would think

    THANK YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO! I purchased almost the same kit you did and couldn’t figure it out until I watched your video the instructions like you said were so very long but you made short work of it and the tutorial was excellent! Tomorrow I’ll return to my moms house and be able to install it thanks to you!
