Plumbers tape needs to go on the direction of the turn. If it tightens clockwise install your tape clockwise. He installed the tape counter clockwise. This will cause the tape to come off on installation and may cause leaks. Putting the tape on the way it tightens makes sure the tape will stay on.

I fixed a shower spout before. My problem is, I have moved into a new place (new to me) a week in and my faucet sprang a leak and was shooting water out of the bottom of the spout. Having replaced one before I went to unscrew it and it broke off - pipe and all from the wall. What is my recourse here when my pipe/spout is broken?

I called a handyman thinking that it would be cheaper then a plumber and figured it would be close to $150 plus the cost of the spout. I had bought the wrong one. I did not need the one with the allen screw. I was a little concerned about turning it with a channel lock as it seemed really tight but once it started to move I was okay. It works great. I just subscribed to you just in case you have more videos that I can use.

My old spout had a hole in the bottom, so I knew it was a set-screw type. However, I had to twist the spout 90 degrees until I finally found the hex screw. Whoever had installed it must have put the spout in sideways, set the hex-screw, then spun the spout downwards.

You did say you could soak it first in something (white vinegar?) to remove gunk first? Did you tie a bag of cleaner to end to clean it? Nice you have such clean hands and clean shower as well. VERY excellent. I "almost" feel bold enough to try. Mine leaks like crazy.

I already replaced the diverter once but it was really never the same because of the build-up on the spout itself and it's impossible to get the build-up off now. The damage is done. Our water is so full of minerals I think I'm going to have to just replace the spout every few years. Your succinct and thorough video was just what I needed.

And last be careful not to tighten the new spout too much. My son Just tightened it by hand. It works fine. Keep me posted how it went.

+backyardmech Once I had to spend $200 just to get a leaky commode fixed. First I think floor installers didn't tighten up the water supply thing at the wall after resetting commode, and the leak was from water supply onto floor. First attempt was a Handyman who put a new kit in toilet tank. Still leaked. Second called a plumber, explained where the leak was. He said the toilet kit was bad & put another one in. Left. Still had a leak, called plumber back and finally listened to me and tightened the nut thing at the water supply line. That's all that was ever wrong. I couldn't do it because of arthritis in hands. Plumber paid no attention to me - thinking he knew more than I did, so it ended up costing me $200 when all I needed was a pair of pliers and a stout hand to tighten the nut.
