    Worked perfectly for me... I had the exact same style spout. Removed the diverter parts and filed and cleaned the build up - also used a little CLR lime and rust remover. Placed the spout back into place successfully - The first time I pulled the diverter - water continued to leak from the spout - Per recommendation - Pulled it 2 or 3 times. On the last pull, the diverter seated successfully and ALL the water diverted to the shower head instantly and WITHOUT a drip from the spout! Thank U Thank U - I was just on my way to the hardware store and you saved me a trip! Gratefully! TJ

    Thanks soo much for video. Tips: It is a big pain to extract the pull pin out. I had to get the Mrs to pull on the pin while I used two hands to spread the plastic retainer (Spout in the vice Cloth wrapped). A needle nose is definitely the way to go as shown. I used a Dremel to polish the interior metal sealing surface--smooth out the file action. I also tried vinegar-Baking soda to take out the corrosion (No good result on this). Impression: That donut washer is critical--as pressured water enters the spout, it pushes on the washer (Through the hole) and forces it out against the spout wall forming much of the sealing action--additional to the washer surface itself. This is why the washer has odd shape--side wall rim. Our spout just slides into a copper pipe and you tighten the Allen Screw. Another one has a short stubby threaded pipe from the wall--old--from 1964,

    If you're having trouble getting the white prongs apart, consider unscrewing the top part of the silver diverter knob, and pushing the interior white structure and washer out the bottom of the tap, as opposed to opening the prongs with pliers. Pretty sure that's how it was supposed to be done. (On the type I have at least, which looks pretty much exactly like this one from what I can see.)
    Also something I didn't realize right away? On the bottom of the tap there might be a screw tightened to hold it to the wall pipe that you have to unscrew first before the tap will turn and come off the wall. Looks like his has a spot for it, but perhaps the screw just wasn't there/wasn't tightened.

    what I did is to add a thin washer under the main washer/ seal to make the main washer seal protrude a little more from its Seat, so when you pull the handle it will seal better against the spout hole. In my opinion, the factory seal is too low in its Seat, needs more "meat" so it will do a positive seal. This will make the pull handle a little heavier to pull but by golly it really sealed the dammed spout from leaking. You can thank me later ! :)

      Thanks very much for this suggestion, I replaced the washer and it didn't divert the water at all because of the empty space it left. I didn't have a second washer lying around, so I just got what was left of the old one and cut it flat, put it in, then put the new one on top. Works perfect.

    • @zurdoremi
      @zurdoremi Před 2 lety +1

    Great video that gives the tip of smoothing the mating surface of the washer with a file. A replacement rubber cup washer is only a couple of dollars so it is worth replacing at the same time but in your case, it would still be leaking because that was not the problem. Also, I saw in another video to use a wooden dowel to place in the spout to turn the spout for removal if it is too stuck to remove by hand. Of course, first check it is not the slip-on type that has the Allen key at the bottom.

    Great job. I had the exact problem and your video had just enough info to fix the problem. A 15 minute job. My only criticism is not all tub spigots are threaded. Mine was held on by an Allen screw into a plastic collar around the water outlet pipe. Not a big problem, but I had to figure out why my tub spigot was not unscrewing. I also had to reseat the plastic collar during the reinstallation process, since I had pulled it out of position, trying to unscrew the spigot. Easily accomplished with a deep socket and some lightly tapping with a hammer. Otherwise, a very useful video. Thanks!

I took a flat blade screwdriver from underneath and splayed the nylon latch-fingers apart and pulled up on the diverter knob on top of the tub filler. The nylon part with the diverter rubber washer slid down and out the bottom of the spout. I replaced the washer with a Draco "TUB SPOUT DIVERTER REPAIR KIT" from depot. I believe that you inserted the diverter washer backwards. The diverter on our tub is a cup style. If it is turned the wrong direction, water deflects off of it which allows the diverter to drop down and causes horrible leaking to occur out of the tub spout. If it is turned the correct direction (which is so that the concave side is facing the water flow) water enters into the concave surface and holds it firmly in place so that it barely leaks. Try flipping your washer around so that the concave surface is directed toward the water flow. It should reduce the water dripping from the tub spout significantly.

    • @imzjustplayin
      @imzjustplayin Před 2 lety +1

      Instructions show that with a proper diverter gasket, there will be a tiny ringed ridge on a mostly flat surface. On the other side it's completely concave and the concave part faces away from the water flow and doesn't interact with it. So imagine having a U shaped handle placed upside down in a coffee cup, that's how it's installed according to Danco instructions.

    • @lym3204
      @lym3204 Před rokem

    You don't need to remove the whole spout to fix it. Most of the time you can just remove the plastic gate and rubber seal. Simply reach under the open end of the spout, open up the gate's two plastic side clips a little bit while also pulling up on the knob. Everything should come apart easily when you do this. Then clean the inner flat metal surface of the spout with a metal file (even a regular fingernail emery file will work too). To reinstall everything you do the reverse. If it's hard for you do see what you are doing, just lie down in the tub on your back with you head facing the spout. It takes less than 5 minutes to fix it, and you don't have to worry about not tightening/sealing up the main copper water supply pipe from leaking.

I’m thinking that when the nip instructoions state ‘minimal amount of h2o should come out of tub spout’, it doesn’t mean some water SHOULD be coming out, but rather very little or none should be coming out. I'm an mechanical engineer and find these videos a little pre-historical 3rd world but they give a foundation of the anatomy of what to expect. The proper way is to hold one end while twisting the other the opposite of how it was assembled from the beginning. You can use vinegar to soak it in for half an hour to clean and then a finger of dawn on the washer when assembling will produce a temporary seal. New washers should be placed for each servicing. Give me a thumbs up if it works for you.

    My faucet head has a diverter with gasket heads on BOTH the front and backside of the water hole at the end of the pin. The thin plastic bracing wall that presses up against the front side of the hole cracked up the middle, was bent ever so slightly, and was angled away from the gasket head, thus breaking the seal when the pin was pulled up to divert water to the shower head.
    To straighten out the plastic wall so that the gasket heads sit more tightly up again against the plastic brace/wall, I cut and stacked four pieces of soft cuttable magnets and wedged them tightly between the plastic brace-wall and the front surface of the faucet head. Leaky faucet/diverter fixed!

    They make a replacement diverter (the white plastic thing) in case one of your prongs breaks off, like mine did. Unfortunately, it appears that there is only one company that makes them, and they only make the newer rectangular style, not the perfectly square style used in older tub spouts. Because of that, I had to purchase a new spout, even though I preferred the style of the older one. Also, as others have mentioned, there are two different styles of spouts. One is a twist off, and the other has a small screw on the under side near the wall that you loosen and then pull the spout off.

    Check underneath for a set screw (often a recessed allen head). Twisting with the set screw engaged can destroy your copper pipe, which is much more work to replace.

    This was very helpful. However, I have a big warning if you plan to do this yourself. If you need to replace the diverter (washer and the small plastic unit that contains the washer), they are not all of the same size. I have a delta tub spout and the diverter is thinner than all the replacement parts that I could find. Not a reflection on this video but just a warning that repairs can go wrong and become nightmare. In my case, I have ordered an entire delta tub spout ($37) at Amazon. Will report back if/when this works.

    My rubber washer was in good shape, but it was a bit too subsurface to make a reasonable seal. So after sanding the seal surface, I also put a thin plastic washer behind the rubber washer to push it out a bit. Worked great.

    • @danstheman33
      @danstheman33 Před rokem

      You don't need the additional washer, and that will probably make things worse.
      The washer is designed to be recessed, and sit below the plastic lip, so that it slides easily without damaging the washer.
      Then when it's in the closed position, the water pressure from the spout gets behind the washer and pushes it tight against the hole, making a pretty decent seal, as long as the washer is installed in the correct orientation.
      My spout was badly leaking because someone put an extra washer in, Once I removed it it now makes a perfect seal, even with the old washer (though I did also sand down the rough surface).

    WARNING WARNING - not all can be removed by twisting it off. Some have a set screw that holds it in place. There are no threads to twist off. THIS SHOULD BE THE FIRST POST.

    Thank you!!! My tub faucet is cheap plastic but looks like metal. Well I went to pull up the piece that turns your shower water on and it and it's fellow parts fell out in my tub. I was freaking out thinking how to hell can I even get these pieces back inside the faucet from inside the tub! 😂 I didn't even know I could unscrew the faucet. Lol but thanks to your video showing all the parts I got it back together. But I saw some strains where 2 parts are about ready to break completely. So I will be installing a new tub faucet and not plastic! Looking to see if you have a video on that?

      @chicagohandyman  Před rokem

      I don’t have a video on that but it is very straight forward. The new faucet will come fully assembled. You would install it the same way shown in this video. You’ll need Teflon tape to complete the install.

    So did this but came to find the spout was so corroded that the supports inside for the diverted were crumbling as I buffed it. Not to mention some of the components of the old Slip on spout we’re still attached to our pipe! But at least I tried it lol, the diverted itself was pretty ok! It’s that darned spout that was a problem.

    The biggest problem on this repair is to remove the plastic diverter from the metal pin with the round top.
    The pin has two parts, the round button screwed to the pin at the top. The design make repair and replacement very easier without having to break the plastic diverter.
    If the button won't come out, just used two pliers to remove the top. It makes the job much easier.
