- Marshall restores another vintage watch! This time it's a quirky novelty watch based on a Ford Mustang steering wheel. These watches have a lot of character and are a lot of fun, but they used low grade movements in them which make them very difficult to restore. Marshall has to find out why the watch hands spin freely, and then get the thing serviced. It's quite an adventure!

Marshal, you inspired me to "do watches" I got all the necessary gear, watched and finished the course of your guru too. Started with pocket watches, serviced a good few of these, now I'm starting on proper wrist watches. Excellent hobby, it allows you to be in the moment, experience the now, very much so tai-chi. I love the fact that you are not a snob and see value in watches of all types, styles and price. I have heard many people say that if they were allowed to keep only one watch, it would have to be Dads watch. The brand, its price, its collectability etc.. become meaningless.

it's not an issue of being a "snob". this particular watch is so crap you might have gotten it in a cracker jack box. it isn't a subjective difference, it literally IS crap. It was never meant to even be worn AS a watch, hence why it is a "novelty" watch. you're projecting way too much emotion here.

Oh no way! I have a watch identical to this one from my late grandfather's collection, but with a Renault dial. I'll definitely keep this video saved somewhere in the off-chance that I get into watch restoration to fix it!

I would have investigated substituting a jewel for that final metal plate under the shock spring.
Marshall - I am amazed how steady your hands are. Like many others, I have essential tremor. My hobby and therapy is electronics. Soldering can be very fine work, but I can rest the tip of the soldering iron against the joint to be soldered. The solder mask on the circuit board and the surface tension of the molten solder tend to keep the solder in the right place. I find after a few hours of soldering, my tremor is much improved. And after watching you work on a watch, my mental health is much improved. Thank you.
It might have been pointed out here already but Old England were a brand of the UK watch maker Accurist in the late 60's. Their watches were an odd combination of heavy brass cases, odd dial colours such as green and orange, coloured plastic straps and roman numerals, very much a product of the 'swinging London' era. They had low-end Swiss movements such as this EB or Standard (ST). They also made watches that hung on your belt - these were almost pocket watch size of course - and as far as I can tell they were entirely unisex. Other names such as "A Go Go'" and "Piccadilly" also appeared but they were made by the same people. They are collectable, especially over here, and becomnig accordingly rare.
They also made the Beatles Apple Watch, which is definitely collectible. Got one coming to my bench soon
Marshall, thanks for working on watches that aren't all 'highbrow'. Some of the items I've seen you work on fall into the category of 'fun'. This is definitely a 'fun' watch.

I have NO interest in watch repair... but I just discovered you 3 hours ago, and I've been watching your channel ever since! Just... fascinating, positive and ...strangely calming.
Well... Bob Ross was unconventional as an artist and his painting style consisted of shortcuts that simulated more dedicated artist's work. Marshall may not be a master (yet), but his work is excellent and uses conventional and accepted practices and tools. But I get the homespun flavor of Marshall's presentation compared to Bob's.
How is Marshall and bob even remotely comparable?

I love that this was not Yet Another Many-Jeweled watch from a Swiss watchmaker who went out of business in the 1960s. Nice! Cheap, cheerful, fun, engaging video. Keep it up!

As soon as I saw the hands spinning I knew that fork was toast! 😂 I’ve worked on a few super cool watches with these dollar watch/pin movements and some are very cool and run very well and they usually go very cheap because they’re less desirable. Nice work as always!

Always a pleasure watching you work. I am a clockmaker turned watchmaker. You should try a Westminster chime clock rebuild. 3 barrels, 3 complicated trains with springs and levers a bottom plate and a top plate. It will teach you new innovative ways to use profanity 😂😂😂

Marshall, I wanna say that I really hope you keep hold of this watch. Not for any monetary value, but because it clearly reminds you of your father so much, even if it wasn't ever something that belonged to him.

This is where the enthusiast shines. Most professionals would not afford so much time on a souvenir. And who knows when such arcane knowledge will come in handy elsewhere? Well done!
Such a joy to listen to a man and his craft, enjoying the little things in life, in this case very little things. It's more or less a worthless watch but just ordering a fork for the hell of it just to see how far things can go is very satisfying. And getting results as well!! It's working again. I'm not a watch repairman but I kind of expected to fork to be the culprit. The running gear was working but couldn't stop and keep time due to the fork missing in action. I hope to see more discoveries like this.

I love how the dial says "swiss made", like someone looking at that in the 60s-70s would go "oh yes, this is a quality watch" when it was probably made in Switzerland as they made basically every watch movement at that point. It's super cool though.

A lot of early watches worked this way. Split three-quarter plate was very nice when it first came out. It allowed to watch simultaneously to be both thinner and easier to service. It was quite a dramatic change

I love your channel and the restoration walkthroughs are so relaxing. It reminds me of how I felt watching Bob Ross paint as a kid. Like meditation for the soul.
Although you didn't address it and we missed out on the satisfying 'THUNK!' of a mainspring I guess its a sealed barrel and so unserviceable (or tricky to do so). A search online showed a Zodiac has a sealed barrel making lubrication difficult and often requires full replacement of the whole barrel.
I was wondering about the mainspring as well. Interesting - a sealed barrel! That may also explain why the watch was not going to achieve more consistent time on the grapher

Serviced my dad’s really old stop watch from the 70’s with one of these movements…was my first….boy did I learn a few things lol…column wheel was the Bain of my life for a few days..had to keep walking away for a few lol..great video thank you

You have got to be the only person alive who has every worked on one of these watches. Congrats on the achievement.
Nice breath of fresh air!! Different watch, different internals, and a great example of revitalizing something of interest. Also another option, with warnings, to consider for people considering getting into the hobby, of lower end watches that may be more accessible to attempt. I know tons of older Mustang fans who have and drive their toys who would trip over themselves, and remove a high end Rolex, to have this working watch to wear during their shows and outings.
Marshall, I actually started learning with these types of movements and then progressed to the more complicated ones. Aligning the pivots really tests your patience when there are no jewels, as you mentioned. What makes it even more complicated is keeping the movement in the same spot and in focus, since your cameras are rolling and you don't want to miss the moment everything clicks into place. I also find it very hard to regulate these movements. I can never get them to have a stable rate, and they are sometimes running a little fast or a little slow. Thank you for yet another great video!

Love your channel Marshal. I used to be a watchmaker/clockmaker professionally until the 1990s when I changed direction and left it behind to be a computer programmer. Watching you restore these watches reminded me of my love for horology and I have recently started doing both watches and clocks as a way to unwind after work. Thank you so much for these videos.
Hi Marshall may I say this is one of the best restoration videos you have done . As it's the sort of watch that most of us would not be afraid to work on. I've seen many watches at cheap prices but thought to myself what if it breaks I'll ruin it. But something like that watch I would have a go at. Please do more like this. 31:21 The FIRST and probably ONLY time you will ever hear Marshall say "at least 'technically' running?!" It takes a wise man to know when to call it real!
This is beautiful! The rally strap is a perfect match. The only small glitch is that you can just see the ends of the strap peeking out past the rim of the steering wheel. You might be able to get a similar strap with curved ends so the ends of the strap will be completely hidden behind the steering wheel.
Gosh! I want a watch like that. I can wear expensive watches and hardly anyone notices but I can wear fun ones and people love them.

How does that Main Spring work, I noticed you did not disassemble it. And I saw something in the beginning that said Nonadjustable? Love your videos, I am 'Legally Blind" so this would be a little tricky, and if I lost a spring, forget about it, I ran my own business for near 30 years and it is nice to see someone with such a passion for your hobby, your job, your commitment to quality and your 'sticktoedness'. And like I saw in a comment below, that your not a snob and actually have fun with what you do, 'Shout Out' to you as I had a '66' and a '69' and a stack of tickets to boot. Great job!

First off may I say you really nailed that re-truing of the gear! The first watch I ever owned my parents bought for me when I was in grade school in the '70s. It was a pin pallet watch. It is a faux chronograph. I actually still own it. And it still runs. I have to say though, it is LOUD. You really know you are wearing it.
That's a super cool watch. You didn't mention that the trouble you were having with the getting the pivots set was because the wheels weren't in correctly and that the center wheel pivot was keeping the bridge from dropping down low enough to engage the others. Once you reversed that (2nd wheel on top of center wheel), it all went together. Great work.

Man I’ve thought about this as well, i have the Ferrari version of this watch and I have a 70s sabb corporate watch prize with the most crap movement ever seen! And a gorgeous xo retro Ferrari 250 gt dna watch with a basic quartz movement in it, but the case is cavernous so I could put in an eta mechanical movement in it or such!

I’m not really a person who wears watches but I find it amazing how they actually work. I found your channel and after binging a ton of your video I thought this is something I want to try. So I ordered some watchmaking tools and I’m going to give it a go. Now All I need are inexpensive watches under $30 to practice on

This was super helpful. I'm slowly becoming a (reluctant) expert in servicing the throw-away Timex M116 movement used in the 1980's.
Back in the 60's auto dealerships would give these watches out to customers. Old England made them for several different auto manufacturers, like Chevrolet, BMW, and Jaguar. From what I've heard, they were purchased by the dealerships themselves.

You got me hooked into this. I've just pulled my first movement apart that wasn't running. It's a Westclox Pocket Ben with no jewel's at all. On a number of the wheels, you can actually push the pivot through the wheel. It's running again but still has a few issues that I will hopefully take care of as soon as my demagnetizer arrives as I know there are a number of pieces that are effected and it's a bit all over the place with keeping time.

at the beginning of this video I thought that was an ugly watch. After spending time with it and seeing it restored and with the racing strap I get it and think it is a charming watch. Excellent job yet again.
Another great job. it is my hobby as well, though I am a rookie, last year I did work on a Disney watch from a friend of mine, and it was a huge lesson journey.
My father in law owned a Mazda dealership back in the day...if I remember correctly, it was the second one on the west coast. I found this exact watch with a Mazda dial and restored it for my brother in law. Ran...decently 😊
nice to see this video, last year I ventured into watch restoration and I found a Douglas skindiver world timer (Wolbrock) for cheap. I figured this should be a good one to start with. Well, I spent days putting the top plate back on. (movement is similar to your mustang watch) I am happy to report that this step was finally achieved and tested. I unfortunatelly bent the hair spring at reassembly. Can't win them all.. Haha.
I almost bought one of those about 6 months ago. It vanished just before i could get to it. I was super excited when i saw your thumbnail with that mustang watch in it!
I have my Grandfather's Wesclox Scotty pocket watch from the 1960s. It does run. I have it in a globe and wind it say every month or so just to work it a bit. They were the working man's watch of the day. I have mine from the 1970s that I had in the military. They were not expensive, but are my most prized possessions. I appreciate your passion.
