    Despite the character of Hochstetter being an utterly despicable Gestapo thug, Howard Caine played him beautifully. In those moments when it looks like he's screwed up big, like in this clip, he manages to portray the guy's dilemma so well that you almost feel sorry for him.

      Yeah that takes real talent and real life innate likability to be able to portray characters who are unsavory or not supposed to be likable like Hochstetter, Burkhalter, Klink, Schultz or Archie Bunker, George Jefferson, Dan Fielding etc. yet we can't help but love them because the actors make them funny and human.

      Maybe, maybe not. That camp was run by the Luftwaffe and so Hogan was its responsibility. There was no love lost between the regular military and the Gestapo, Hochstetter might have gotten in serious trouble if he summarily executed an Allied POW because something the POW said annoyed him.

    The funniest episode was when Klink killed Hogan and stuffed him in the position of a German salute while wearing an SS uniform. Then Klink nailed his feet to his front porch for the other prisoners to see whenever they came outside.

    Incorrect rank insignia on Hochstetter. He's wearing the collar patch insignia of an SS-Standartenführer ( Colonel ) furthermore only ranks below Standartenführer wore the SS runes on the other collar patch ( Obersturmbannführer and below). Also the SS did not address Superior officers as "Herr" as in the other branches did in the Wehrmacht. Only their rank as in for example Sturmbannführer ( Major) Hochstetter.

      Major Hochstetter's Mercedes-Benz W142 (Typ 320) seen in this episode used standard petrol, not diesel. Actually, very few of the smaller German military vehicles of the time (staff cars, light armored cars, reconnaissance vehicles, utility vehicles (jeep-like VW Kübelwagen), etc) used diesel engines. Gasoline was easier and cheaper to produce.

      The car was no Mercedes it was a Rolls Royce Phantom III

    • @matthewq4b
      @matthewq4b Před 5 lety +4

      @Perryinjax Studios It was a TV show. Bing Crosby used what was available to him. Most all the vehicles used in Hogan's Heros were owned directly by him or by his studio. Bing owned several Mercedes himself, and was quite an avid collector of Mercedes and Rolls Royces he insisted everything used in the show actually ran and drove. That Phantom was used in several episodes. And it was not out of the realm of possibility either as the Nazi's confiscated many private vehicles in Western Europe for their own use. So it is not too far out there to have a German general using a confiscated Rolls as their staff car.
