    I believe snazzy uses google maps as data which means no commercial usage or you need licence for commercial projects... only styles are free to use. There are sites that provide map data for free but they need to be credited for data even when you edit and style map.

      I'm glad it was helpful - this is only my opinion but I have found that creating really high-quality map designs on Redbubble and other sites, I regularly make sales (mainly because they are a high-demand niche and there are so many horrible, horrible designs). Fonts and colors present a billion opportunities!

    If you read the fine print, the site says the *styles* are public domain. The map information is not. The maps will have Google copyright notice and terms of use link. The terms of use link takes you to a terms of service page, and from that page there is a link to "using google maps, google earth, and street view" page that says you cannot use google map info for commercial purposes. I'm not a lawyer but I don't see how you get around that.

    • @SharonPerp
      @SharonPerp Před 3 lety +1

      I know, it's pretty obvious once he says they use Google Maps. Businesses like Google don't become world dominators by giving their IP away. Too bad, because it's really a great idea. I'd love to make t-shirts of my city's neighborhoods.

      @@cacevedo07 I never saw an explanation from Zen on the observation that Bonkers Dave and I made, so I have to assume our point was valid. When I said "Unless I'm missing something..." I expected him to reply, but he didn't, so I am deducing that Dave's and my point was valid. Zen always seems to give us good warnings about gray areas, but this seems to be black and white, and he gave us incorrect information - information that could get us beginners in trouble if we used it as stated. I can't help but feel disappointed. On the other hand, I'm very grateful for the time and trouble Zen puts into educating us on his two CZcams channels. I subscribe to them both and always give him a thumbs up for every one I watch - including this one. He has always been, and still is, my favorite POD guru. Well it's a great question especially online. The site is saying that it takes the information from Google and is creating something new and that new thing is available for commercial use. So honestly, I don't see how Google (or anyone) could possible prove that anyone downloading the map is stealing. I guess each of us has to decide if we are criminals or artists. Before you start using this, check if snazzy uses Google maps. If you read carefully it says that styles are free to use not data (everything you see on the map). Google maps are not for commercial usage. I mean you can do it like some people do it and hope nothing happens. It is your choice, I am just putting this information out there. Websites like Mapiful don't use google maps for their map prints and they credit from where data is coming from because it is required to do so.

      Typically the concept of map artwork is not trademarked (anyone can make a map) - I typically use public domain resources to make map art (or I change the way the map looks to such an extent that no one could reasonably confuse it with someone else's map artwork).

      I would recommend altering the map that you download and thus it would be virtually impossible for anyone to trace it back to Google Maps. Google does ask for attribution when using Google Maps, but I would contend that you aren't using Google Maps as a MAP. You are using it to produce artwork and thus have substantially changed the medium to the point where it is art.
