A note for potential tourists - the British Library is not 'one of the biggest museums in the world' because... it's a library. However, the British Museum IS a museum. Come visit.
But the British Library (in the King's Cross area of London) does have a small permanent collection of books and documents on display, which is well worth a visit if you've got an hour or so to spare.
Top tourist tip: many British museums are free to visit, highly recommend V&A, Science and Natural History -there's a great day out right there! (It seems they now make most of their money by merchandise and special exhibitions...)
Thank you so much. This video is amazing. I do not know that. I love maps, vintage maps and globes and I saw your video happily. Thanks again. Cheers from Spain.
Your channel is the best of all that I have watched. You are so helpful! Thank you for doing such a great job. I am going to use the other cool pictures on there too, besides the maps.
Honestly one of the best pod and redbubble, teespring design related channel i have ever come across with some really good content. Love your work and i hope i can also make some good money doing these.
It's crazy how many times I said WOW! watching this! Those maps had me salivating, absolutely GORGEOUS!! Thanks, you've inspired me, NEW SUB!! P.S. I respect your Zen-ness!!
Maps are and have always been some of the most expensive IP to produce, so they are not only typically under copyright but also stringently protected. Eg, most map makers inserted hidden errors in their maps to be able to tell that someone has used their map.
For the last couple of days your videos have popped up for me to view. I just want to say thank you in advance of using this information. You are so kind and helpful sharing this. I wish you further success with your channels. All the best! Thank you so much!
That was a terrific video, incredibly helpful and well done. You deserve a Like and I subscribed, because brother, if this is your level of commitment I am all in. Thanks man.
This video is incredible helpful because I have tried to find prints of nice antique maps online several times over the years and I never succeeded. Your tips make it seem so simple. Pretty embarrassing kind of. I saved your video for reference for my next attempt. Now I „only“ need to convince my significant other about hanging up maps.
Wonderful! Thank you for showing how you find these. I too find many of the museum and archive websites very hard to navigate so this gives us some great searching tools!
Thanks for providing great content, I have learned a lot about POD strategies, for sure! Question, do you know of any FREE for public use "quotations" websites?
Another great video, so incredibly helpful, thank you! I have been binge watching you and just when I thought I'd reached the end, I find another video. This is my favorite CZcams channel EVER!!! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge. :)

Mr Zen, if you have time, can you explain how to upload designs ( pins) to Pinterest the right way? I know we can go thru RB directly. But we can also use canva to make pins the right size. Where I get stuck is when Pinterest asks for the link. I don’t know how to get the link on my product on RB. Is it just the long URL that appears in the main search bar or whatever it’s called? Wouldn’t that URL be too long? Any advice is appreciated
Thank you sir. I have a question, do we need some sort of editing before we use the maps on print on demand like t shirt or poster? Maybe retouching the image, or adding strokes things like that. Could you please make a tutorial video about that? Thanks again.
I take it the Library of Congress doesn't have a good option for locating or searching out old and vintage maps? BTW Thank you so much for the info about to start bookmarking pages now I love old illuminated maps.
Yes great question - LOC has great maps but their interface is clunky (in my opinion) so I want to eventually do a Library of Congress walkthrough in a bit more detail. I need to get that video done!
What is your opinion on making multiple stores on redbubble for different niches? How would one go about it? Do I need different paypals for all the different stores? Keep up the great work, it helps a lot!
Yes I have heard this is possible but I have not done it personally (other than I help out on my wife’s shop). I would recommend contacting RB first and get it in writing just in case the account police decide to start shutting things down 🚔
I watch all of your videos carefully , I need you to kindly make a video on how to get selected for merch by Amazon if you have any knowledge about it , it really help us alot❤️👍
That's weird, it looks like it moved! There's a link on "Watercolour World" here: www.watercolourworld.org/collection/british-library-king-george-iii-topographical-collection. They marked the sight at copyright 2022 (but personally I don't see how that is enforceable as these are public domain pictures but everyone can judge their morals I guess).
Yes - many museum websites say that their work is under copyright. However, it is questionable whether they could ever enforce it. (They would have a hard time proving that anyone took the museum’s copy vs. Another one online. If it is public domain, they can certainly ask, but it is up to each person’s ethics as to whether or not it is belonging to that museum.
Yes it is a very large collection but they state it is not for commercial use, so I don’t typically include it in the map videos. Great collection though!
It depends on the site - but generally you would create artwork based on those maps and then put the art on products. So you could make a nice looking pattern or remove a background, lots of options to be creative. Or just have a shop that sells old map designs as is.
Anything older than 1928 (as of 2024) - 95 years, is in the public domain. Digital copies of public domain works are also public domain, as long as they have not been altered. Walt Disney made his career taking fairy tales that were in the public domain, and retooling them as cartoons. The fairy tales are in the public domain, but the Disney movies (at this point) are not. Anyone can sell the story or Snow White, without issue. You cannot sell the Disney movie Snow White. As long as you keep that in mind, you should be safe. @@zenwatercooler i recognized you, i must thank you ,i watch your work ,started on redbbubble month ago no experience in design but i cannot get any job so look for some options how to earn online ,your videos help a lot.
No "Public Domain" option for me. You join with free option and it does not look anything like this. As for "The British Library!" It´s a library dude, not a museum. Flickr also has nothing to do with the library either, it was only a stand alone public photographic community, were you could get advice and feedback on your work. Yet later started to move away from only the photo side. Most of the photos there should be protected and if not only posted at a middle quality range, not good enough for printing on an A3 for example and permission should always be asked for prior to downloading. What you see on screen is only a pixel for pixel online low quality version, as the site has rules for that. Searching for specific maps would be impossible, due to the standard subjects posted. Also the old printed maps have nothing to do with Art, they are not even produced with any Artistic intentions other than to give a perspective. Please think more about what you say, you are allowed to be impressed by the skills, techniques and overall results in historically recorded Cartography processes, including their limited printed quality, that often was defied by just those limitations (line thickness etc) yet Art had very little to do with the whole process.
But the photo / image taken of the map belongs to someone - they have copyright to that photo. Putting that photo in the public domain is the gift here.
Yeah, the other commenter here is correct. The reason so many famous paintings, e.g. aren't publicly available is because the hi-res images themselves are owned by their respective institutions. The photograph or scan is a separate piece of media.
It depends who owns the copyright or trademark. Some authors, for example, left their intellectual property rights to corporations (like a health industry childens hospital) 100+ years ago, while others (like some big corporations or governments) have grabbed expired c or tm images and books and legally claim them as their own. Also, the phrase "in perpetuity" sticks in my mind, though I can't quite recall anything else about it. My point is just because something's old doesn't mean it's public domain / free use.
A note for potential tourists - the British Library is not 'one of the biggest museums in the world' because... it's a library. However, the British Museum IS a museum. Come visit.

Do we have to make modifications if we want to go commercial?
No you don't have to - these are public domain so you can do anything to them or just use them as is. I love public domain!
