- Many old children's books are actually in the public domain. Yes it's true - books like the Wizard of Oz, the Three Little Pigs and many fairy tale books are public domain - which means that you can use the text and the images from these books for any art project (including commercial projects like print on demand, Redbubble, Teepublic, publishing an ebook, creating high-end art prints, etc).
I include a quick walkthrough on how you can find public domain properties that come into copyright-free status on January 1st of each year as well.

Yes, if you're going to use "The Wizard of Oz," remember that the lady Dorothy meets is not Glinda, although she appears toward the end of the book, and the shoes Dorothy ends up wearing are Silver, not Ruby. Also, L. Frank Baum wrote 13 books to "Wizard" and built an incredible world to draw inspiration from. Seriously, look this dude up. He was incredibly prolific and had a heck of an imagination, and literally everything he wrote is public domain.
Thank you!!!
Brilliant thank you
I have used images from the LOC use and reuse sets and have modified them to suit my need. It's a shame to let these beautiful images gather dust in some dark and dingy dungeon of the LOC when they can be reused and published again for new generations to enjoy. I'm all for it.
Don't pull the dog by the ear!!😂😂🤣 well I'm not kidding when I say that since I started this, I haven't yet been this excited! LOVE THIS STUFF!! THANK YOU BUNCHES!!!😅❤❤❤❤❤ I can now move forward with school related projects!

Wow! Amazing find. Thank you so much for the content you share. It is invaluable ❤❤
Another awesome video, thank you for sharing. Btw, I loved how upset you got about the dogs' ears being pulled, that was so sweet. :)

I just stumbled across your channel-new subbie! This is a very informative video and I am so happy to have found it. I hand make journals for baby showers, wedding showers, etc. and these books will be magnificent for my book decor! Since I don’t sell the journals, it’s just as well. I appreciate your clear and easy to follow video. I’m going to look at some others.
Amazing! Welcome aboard!
Wonderful! - thank you so much
WOW! WOW! WOW! Thank you!
AWESOME! Heck, I’ve been searching for out-of-copyright books for YEARS, scanning them in myself. This will save me so much time! Wow! I mean, I’ll still probably keep looking for books and scan them in when I have the downtime, of course, too. ;)
There are so many great books! I love scanning in too, I am glad I am not the only scanner person!! That is awesome!

Thanks for this. LOC is a huge rabbit hole of a resource.
as of aug 2022 bambi and winnie the pooh are now in the public domain, in case you want to do any of them
Great information, something I never knew were to locate and will be doing some searching for my watercolour paintings. Many thanks
Joan, thanks for your kind words! - Stax
Love this! Can you link which of your videos best describes how to digitally enhance and clean up old images? I’m struggling to find exactly how to do that. Thanks so much for everything you do on both your channels. 🥰
Thank you! Here is a video I did on cleaning up old posters. I am using Photoshop but the ideas/techniques are the same for any graphic design software. I hope that helps!
@@craftystax thank you! Is there a link I missed?
I am sorry! My clipboard failed me - here is the link! czcams.com/video/PiySS_6E0DY/video.html
One note, just because the book is in the public domain doesn't mean RB won't take it down. I had an illustration from a book of Cinderella that pre-dates Disney's movie by decades and RB still took it down. RB's robot has become rather overreaching the last year or so.
Totally agree - I've been battling the RB robot for weeks now and proving the underlying image is public domain (and I change it!) - so annoying.
@@craftystax what do you mean by RB? redbubble?
Hi, Thank you for your informational video. would I be able to take these illustrations and make coloring pages to sell?
Thank you for sharing these resources.
On this one, I found no download button, and wonder if you will share how to download one of these books?
In case nobody told you yet, when you find an image you want, right-click it and "save as is" : )
have you ever sell this type of image on the pod site?? a good video btw
Yes I've done some (not a ton) on print on demand sites "as is" but I've sold a lot of custom signs and pillowcases, pajamas, welcome signs, and children's stuff. Tin Man and Scarecrow are super popular!
I've never used any public domain pics before. Just wondering how you download eg wizard of OZ? I don't see any download buttons anywhere or is that hidden somewhere?
Hey there - yes just right click and "Save As" - it depends on the browser but like Mozilla or Google Chrome it's just right click - hope that helps!
These are beautiful images but their dpi are all 72. I can't use them. Or am I just dense?
How do you download the books?
You can right-click the picture and save each page as an individual image.

how you find this stuff is beyond me...your search history must be strange.
🤣 That is very true!
Zen finds all these amazing things! Meanwhile, I am looking up “shark week” - Stax
But even so, the person who used the drawing will become the owner of the design inside the platform he uses. It will notify anyone else who has used it.
Interesting!
How about selling digitals?
Yes these are public domain (so there are no copyright restrictions, you can use them however you wish)-and I personally think that making high-resolution PNG and/or SVG files from these illustrations is an awesome idea.
Could you copy it 100% and in a kdp format?
Hey there - you could copy it but Amazon KDP probably would not accept it (because the book is already available as a public domain book). I would recommend changing it in some meaningful way to make it unique and then you would have a better chance of getting it published.
Clear and well presented, Thank you.
