Tim Curry sang 'Professional Pirate' live on set and in one take. No more lip sync songs in Muppet movies ever since. I love this man and all the puppeteers to make that happen x
I grew up on the original Muppet Movie and also love Muppets Take Manhattan (Muppet caper is the “temple of doom” of that trilogy for me) but something definitely changed after Henson’s death. There was a little less …. Something… that I definitely missed.
A few things that might help One: you didn't expect a Muppet movie to be a musical? Two: Jim's songs were all early recordings, when it came time to sing during the shoot, Kevin's voice was breaking Three: They dud originally plan on Gonzo and Rizzo being "Jim" and "Hawkins " but it didn't work, because Treasure Island is a coming of age tale. Four: Blind Pew was done in the same way as the Swedish Chef, two performers, one doing the body, one the hands Five:They put the rats in for comic relief Six: Spam got angry and tried to see over the character Spamm, it got throw out. Seven: Brian insisted everyone take seasickness tablets because he was afraid they would get sick on the gimbals, it just put everyone to sleep
I remember how happy I was when I found this on DVD last year. Had been trying to find it for a good couple of years. And only for $7. Fun fact: Tim Curry has also been Captain Hook in Fox's Peter Pan and The Pirates, meaning he's been two of the best Pirates in fiction
Tim Curry is God and all should bow. Seriously though I wonder if the Kermit character here was very much based on Jim Henson. I get the feeling that Jim was super chill but if you ever managed to grate on his temper look out.
He was great as Nigel Thornberry. Also he did an amazing job as the Russian leader in Red Alert 3, was cool cause George Takei was also in that game as the leader of Japan.
Tim Curry did amazing acting in this, especially when he leaves and Jim says he never wants to see him again, you can see the pain in face and eyes hearing that. Or when he tells Jim “your brave and true…you didn’t learn that from me” like he realizes how bad of a person he actually is and wishes he was a better person but it’s the only life he knows. Between the this and Treasure Planet I gotta give it to Treasure Planet cause they spend much more time having the two bond and Jim see Silver as a father. Also when Silver leaves it’s on good terms between the two and he says how proud he is and that he has the making of greatness in him and he wants him to become an amazing person.
"I feel like Miss Piggy wasn't utilized much in this one." That's honestly just do to an unfortunate fact that the two stories they chose to interpret with Muppets (Treasure Island and Christmas Carol) didn't really have female leads. Even this one had to change Ben to Benjamina just so that she could have a part. (That's actually something they commented on when looking at American History during their "Great Moments of History" show in the Magic Kingdom park a while back with most of the historical figures being male so Miss Piggy played both King George the III and George Washington).
If anyone wants to see another great Tim Curry performance check out the cutscenes for Red Alert 3 where he plays the Russian leader. There are quite a few famous actors and actresses in that game including George Takei as the leader of the Japanese Empire
