Tim Curry as Long John Silver in a Muppet version of Treasure Island was one of the best casting ideas in the history of the dramatic arts.
It's only a shame that his version of Long John Silver wasn't in any of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Him interacting with Johnny Depp and/or Geoffrey Rush would've been more golden than the treasure that pirates typically hunt for.
The closest I've ever got to divorce with my wife was when I showed her this movie and she wasn't impressed.
My favorite line is "Show him you've been practicing!!" Which implies the pirates got together on the ship and rehearsed this song. LOL
Funt Fact! Pirates actually did have performances on their ships; sang songs, acted out plays, and had free form "rap battles". There are still songs you hear along the coasts that originated or are thought to have originated from pirates/sailors (Drunken Sailor from earlier in the film is a good example) so, maybe one of them did write and preform something like this!
I just learned about the old "rap battle" recently. I believe it was called flyting. Basically back and forth insults that rhyme
@@rezalustig6773 well...yes. lol. But to me it sounds almost like the same thing. Maybe just have a different word for it. Idk.
@@temptedbyasiren Sounds like the Monkey Island series with the rhyming battles.
@@c_king1031 Gotta do something for entertainment when you are spending most of you life on the sea.
Who thinks Tim Curry is perfect for the role as Long John Silver
plus he looks perfect for the part and is over the top without being too over the top
and has the perfect voice and a masterful, multi talented performer
A pirate saying, "I could have been a lawyer, but I had too much heart." The wholesomeness.
Jim must have had just an IRON will man, if Tim Curry sang this song to me I would join his crew instantly.
He wouldn't even have to have sung to get me to join... but I wouldn't stop him from indulging in his only number in the movie. Plus his crew had been practicing. *lol*
It was his only number and he nailed it
He even said in the song it’s his one number, and it still sounds natural for this guy
Tim sang this in one take and live (rather than dubbed or lip sync). So all Muppet movies now demand live singing...
If you grew up in the 90's tim curry holds a special place in your heart.
if you worked the live action Rocky Horror Picture Show on a regular basis, Tim Curry held a special place in... ... ...um, no, that's not your heart. Never mind.
In the 90s it was never a question of IF a show would use Tim Curry, only a matter of When.
"I could've been a lawyer, but I had too much heart". Probably the first lawyer joke ever said in a Disney film, haha!
LynchMobFilms actually the first lawyer joke Disney ever made was in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. When Mr. Toad is accused of stealing a motorcar, his horse Cyril comes to court to testify. When Cyril says Toad got the motorcar the honest way, the prosecutor asks “what is the honest way?” To which Cyril replies “I thought you wouldn’t know that, guv’nor”
I was expecting "I could've been a lawyer but I didn't have the heart" because that would be a twist on the cliche. As a lawyer joke it wouldn't pass the bar.
Lawyer jokes are like lawyers, they're not clever.
I love that line and the “ I couldve been in politics because ive always been a big spender” line. Both are lines you miss/gloss over as a child but notice when older. Makes the movie even more enjoyable 😂.
When I started working at a pirate themed restaurant, I told my sister I was a professional pirate and she said "you don't have to wear a suit."
you know, if Tim Curry was the captain, I'd join his pirate crew in a heartbeat. man's got charisma.
I know this comment is 13 years old but i just have to say Yeah if tim curry was the captain i'd become a pirate in a heartbeat. I know i'd probably end up swinging from a noose but i know damn well the journey to the gallows will be a Fun one.
"This is my ONLY number!" And we all know why! He'd have stolen the entire movie rather than only every scene he was in!
Tim Curry's overacting is magnificent. His laugh straight from Pennywise, his vocals from the "Rocky Horror"...just awesome
You just know that Long John legitimately liked and cared about Jim. He was an evil person who would do whatever he HAD to, but would genuinely prefer to go about it in a friendly, nonviolent way.
A criminal to the core, but in every other way, a good guy. Utterly sincere.
Is really a bad guy?. I mean this was a time when the British were trading slaves and invading countries, so leading some pirates actually seems more noble than what their bosses were doing.
@@scottbuckley823 just because someone is worse doesn’t mean that they’re not also a villain
This song has convinced me to quit my job and become a pirate with Tim Curry.
No one asked Tim to give an Oscar worthy performance alongside muppets. He did that for us.
first time i saw this I was amazed that a human could steal a film from the muppets lol
I'm not convinced Tim Curry isn't a muppet that somehow managed to escape the lab and has been running amok for years.
I truly think this is the peak accomplishment of the muppet franchise. Never got as good as this, never will be better.
Muppets movie 2011 is a distant 3rd or 4th. The original muppets might be in 3rd.
Thumbs up if Tim Currey was the best Long John ever!
Charlton Heston and Jack Palance did a good job as well but Tim Curry was the first Long John Sliver for me and helped me love the story of treasure island from movies to the book.
"We'd never STAB you in the back..."
The ease and casual manner with which he flicks that muppet away is both hilarious and terrifying 😂😂😂
"and we'll love you like a son!" always brings a tear to my eye.
For some reason the song in general brings tears to my eyes. Must be a nostalgia thing.
@@Stefan-ji2ek This song hits just as hard at 38 as it did when I was 12.
“You’ll be honest, brave, and free. The soul of decency. You’ll be loyal, and fair, and on the square, and MOST importantly..” that does it for me. Because what more could you ask for?
His diction, the perfect pauses, the belly laugh, perfection.
I love him as Hook, the concierge in Home Alone, Clue, Toxic, my favorite is Cardinale Richlieu in The Three Musketeers. A wonderful actor. A private man. A class act.
When he sings "a more challenging career!", theres something about the progression that is really gripping!!!
Sing it lads! Show him we've been practicing 😂
This album not being on Spotify is one of my greatest sadnesses in life
You can really tell how much fun Tim Curry had doing this song.
Tim Curry... The only one who makes me want to be a pirate, a sweet transvestite and a killer clown. Superb actor.
For 90s kids, Muppet Treasure Island and Muppet Christmas Carol are the best
"Before we lose our tempers we will always count to 10." hahah, I love it
"Cuz when you're a professional piiiiraaate...."
"You don't have to wear a suit" XD LOL
Muppet Treaure Island will forever be one of my favorite movies.
He acts like this is the most important role of his life, and frankly he may be right.
Credit to this man's acting ability to give me nightmares as IT but then want me to join his crew as a pirate.
Tim curry Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush in the same pirate movie would be the best movie ever!
Disney needs to start making muppet versions of other books,I'd kill for muppets Dracula or 20,000 leagues under the sea
"Hey man, just play the gig. Don't get involved in politics!"
I love the Muppets.
We never deserved Tim Curry. He IS the treasure
dedicated to my 72 year old husband who still sings this ever now and then.
This is literally my favorite song. Close second is the song from the start of the movie. Not my fave from the movie, oh no, my fave of all time of any song ever
I'm surprised how skillfully understated Tim Curry is in this movie; he usually was an eye-rolling over-doing scene stealer. He may have realized he couldn't out-mug the Muppets and honorably played it straight. Very effective, fun stuff (and, sadly, as he says, his "only number").
It's his only lead singing song but he does have a part in Sailing for Adventure. Still, a fantastic actor playing the role perfectly, it's straight but still in the exaggerated manner that fits with the Muppets.
I honestly don't think anyone underestimates Tim Curry even this many years later.
"I could have been a surgeon I like TAKING THINGS APART"
Damn, what a badass line.
I've always loved Muppet Treasure Island ever since I was really little, and I still enjoy it, even nowadays. This movie is so memorable (at least in my opinion) that it will NEVER get old for me, even despite my current age.
So Have I. At first, I thought it was just a pirate film but now it turns out to be the muppet's version of Treasure Island, the famous pirate novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was interesting how gonzo & rizzo were added as Jim Hawkins' best friends & how Beaker also stepped in as Dr Livesey's assistant.
One of the few recent musicals where you actually look forward to the songs!
OH jimmy jim jim jimmity jimjim
I'm not Jimmy Jim Jim jimmity Jim Jim HE'S jimmy Jim Jim jimmity Jim jim
They say you can judge a man based on what they know Tim Curry from. This is one of if not the best answer
Jim was right. All the theatrics aside they're nothing but murdering pirates. Long John is trying to convert Jim with greed. All he asks for is for Jim's compass. A symbol for his actual moral compass that belonged to his father.
We see the pirates smile and singing while they steal and kill each other.
Gonzo and Rizzo later in the scene tag along with Smollet just because Jim is family. They don't need any other motivation.
Like Long John said earlier in the movie, "true friends are worth their weight in gold." We see the pirates turn on Long John when they discover the gold has been taken. This is why Long John can't kill Jim. He was the only one who couldn't be corrupted by greed.
Jim lives on to journey with his family while Long John presumably dies alone with his gold.
Anyway I'm still listening to this banger a decade later.
It's so obvious Tim Curry loved this role.
tim curry is one of my favorite people ever
You're a legend if you're an adult and still visit this from awesome childhood
"Upstage lads. This is my ONLY Number!"
Stop breaking the fourth wall, Long John.
Such a handsome man and so talented.
The way he laughs and how shady he is is hilarious🤣
I still consider this one of the best villain songs ever
It's great that you can tell how much Tim Curry LOVED this role.
Some day I wish to have as much fun doing something as Tim Curry is having in this scene.
This has always been Tim's favorite film to work on. He had such fun and said Muppets have no egos. 😉
This movie came out when I was a toddler, and it is by FAR still to this day my favorite Muppet movie. I know that Jim Henson had passed away beforehand, but man, this movie is just so magical, I just love it!
And Tim Curry played the ruthless cardinal in the Three Musketeers, talk about multi talented.
indeed he is one multi talented performer ! and his performance as Cardinal Richelieu in the three musketeers is my favorite performance and portrayal of the cardinal ever!
still it's extremely sad he had a stroke awhile back
and is now in a wheelchair
plus he's no longer as extremely young as he used to be
like here in Muppet treasure Island
This movie is probably the most underrated musical of all time. I grew up with it as a child, and it is still one of my favorite films.
Tim Curry can shiver my timbers any time he wants.
Aww,the old days. I had a bad crush on jim, lol.
I loved this movie and I still do.
But when you're a Professional Pirate "You don't have to wear a suit" LOL man this is hilarious and my friend showed me this and i was cracking up and love seeing this 😃, This is a Diamond in the Rough and should be visited regularly
What sort of madman gets Tim Curry and only gives him one song?
You could tell Curry enjoyed the extreme campiness of this whole movie.
Tim always gives his all in every performance he does. Something I really love about him
When you think of the greatest actors in the past 100 years this man here Tim Curry is at the top of the list!
Still the best Muppet movie, IMO.
0:58 Look at Jim Hawkin's reaction when Long John starts singing. He's like, "Huh?".lol.
LOL never noticed that. And his eyes move back and forth in time with the song.
He's been nonchalant about the Muppety stuff so far and suddenly now he's confused? Of course now it's also the humans doing it so...
1:20 Noticing Tim Curry has fabulously perfect teeth for a pirate , so perfect he could do a Crest White Strips Commercial!
It's also a reference to the 1954 film starring Marlon Brando: "On the Waterfront". The full(ish) quote is: "I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody. Instead of a bum. Which is what I am".
God, I love Tim Curry
I love this movie I still love this movie and I’m 32 years old
I've always loved Tim curry, he is part of mine and probably your childhoods as well.
Most underrated movie of all time
A rare villain song where the bad guy actually makes a good argument.
It's an amazing song in general, then adding the visual where they subtly undercut every positive selling point puts it over the top. 😂
Oh man. How awesome is Tim?! 🌸
Always come back to this song. Best one in the movie.
Tim has said a few times this was among his favorite roles!
"This is my only number" :) the muppets are the greatest
And this is why I had a crush on Tim Curry as a kid
Then this year I saw him in Rocky Horror Picture show ---- it only fueled the flame LOL
true friendship and adventure is what we cant live without and when you a professional pirate thats what the jobs about
Hilarious to know that there’s at least 5 guys kneeling crotch-level with Tim enthusiastically singing through this number.
Tim curry you are a gift ❤️❤️
hes such a good actor!
I concur! Though I believe "good" would be a total understatement lol
3:30
That's one of my favorite sets of lines in the whole movie.
Tim Curry’s simultaneously makes me giggle and creeps me out.
Every Muppet Villain was pretty good but Tim Curry was the best one in my opinion
The best pirate movie ever made. And, yes, I WILL fight you!
1:17 I love how Jim is startled when everyone breaks into song.
I always insisted he was the good guy as a child. 😆
Best. Kids Movie. Ever. Period.
Hats off to Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil who wrote this song.
00:14 always loved the reveal of John Silver in his Pirate duds. I remember being a kid and seeing this in the theater and that moment was so badass.
Tim Curry. He's the man.
he is such an outstanding actor, and his voice is awesome, i need to buy this movie, havent watched it in forever
“the reason Michael Caine and Tim Curry are so good in their respective Muppet movies is that Michael Caine treats the Muppets as fellow actors, and Tim Curry treats himself as a fellow Muppet”
That's such a cool quote. Where is that from? I want to read that interview or whatever it is from.
