- The Ondophone - the dream of a sound that never was... At least for now, there might be a future where the Ondophone will come to real life. In this weeks episode we are taking a closer look at the first Ondophone prototype, an amazing prototype that served its purpose perfectly by pointing out the flaws in the concept. I think he should give it to one of the other members of the Wintergatan band and let them develop it further to play themselves to accompany him on the MMX, it would give him less to worry about and still have something at the end.
Such is the era of 21st century music: new instruments are being made by ingenious inventors/composers willing to step out of the box and put their creations to use. The ondophone and the modulin will be -- as a result -- examples of this development.

I guess my point is still: don't make incredibly insulting comments to strangers unless you're prepared to have them react accordingly.
can we all just take a moment to realize that this man is not only a musical genius but one of the best artistic and practical designers in the entire world.
It might not have had the intended sound, but the e-bow version gave off some serious Bladerunner vibes sound wise, and that in itself was really awesome
The e-bow sound reminded me of Muse. For example listen to the beginning of Invincible
it reminds me of the risk of rain soundtrack
I was just about to comment bladerunner. Sounds awesome, but i also understand that it isn’t what he wanted. Cool addition to the instrument bank tho
I have no idea why you would call this instrument a failure. It sounds beautiful. Whether or not it becomes part of the MMX, it should definitely be developed into a finished instrument.
I agree!!!!
With an Ebow it sounds identical to a guitar
@@jordanlarson6488 Definitely not. How do you get such a slow increase of volume on a guitar? You gotta pick the string, you can't just slowly make it move faster 😅
It's not supposed to be a part of mmx, just a stand alone instrument for the world tour
DasPikachu I should have been more clear. Using an Ebow on this instrument sounds identical to using an Ebow on a guitar.
Hey, Martin, this does NOT look like a failure to me!
He says the main issue is that it's too hard to use.
It's not good enough for him. That's how artists work. That is why this takes an eternity to make :) I'm guessing it's never going to be "done". He's probably going to keep working on it while using it. Tweak it to perfection, and then add something new 😬
@@MrUnit731 That too.
if he ever made the design he wants, keep this prototype also because the sound of it that creates is so good. It sounds so ominous and soulful at the same time,my type of music when i want to concentrate while studying or working on projects or when I am trying to sleep.
Do not forget he has to be able to get the same effect whilst playing other instruments; not just the ondophone. This isn't really going to be possible if he affixed this unto the Marble Machine X.
These are one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard. I sure hope you come back to this instrument Martin, it’s truly beautiful
I didn't want that opening jam to go on forever, but a few hours would be okay
Sample it. But don't tell anyone. Just listen to it.
This instrument may not fit into your idea of the MMX but it is still a great instrument standing by itself. I feels like an instrument you would see in a sci-fi film. It's an instrument of the future!
You nailed it. But I think that Martin *does* think it's a good instrument (he made a song for us on it after all), but a bad fit for the MMX.
Guy makes a bunch of sci fi instruments
More next at Wednesday, next week
Me: "Sounds beautiful, i feel something mysterious resonating along with it." 😢
Martin: "this isn't how it supposed to sounds like. Let's just wing it for fun."
Me: *making doctor appointment, went to the hospital, had my ears checked, cleaned, fixed and calibrated then came back here to listen* "still got goosebumps listening to it" 😭
Conclusion: i am not worthy.
CONCLUSION: Martin too professional and we to easily attached lol xD
I think he is to much of a perfectionist.
@@MegaBanne easy to say that when we have no idea on how true, Authentic, and Divine was the sound of the instrument he had heard in his dreams. 😏

I'll be honest. I came back here for that awesome song at the beginning.
Opening theme: “Welcome to Luigi’s new spooky mansion.”
Pink Floyd would've paid good money for this instrument some decades ago. Also: it sounds stunning. If it is "improved" to close the gap between your vision and reality, please let that become something new and let this be the Ondophone! It deserves to keep its name.
Pink Floyd was also the first band I thought of when hearing this. And Gilmour may still be interested in this.
My thoughts exactly, after hearing the first sounds coming out of the ondophone! I'm sure Gilmour would find lots of ways to use it :-)
Yes! So very Floyd. Imagine a Molin/ Gilmour collaboration....!
That was my first thought! Impressive!
Although I have been a Pink Floyd fan for most of my life, my first thoughts were actually of the movies of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and the music of Hans Reichel for the Daxophone.
I agree, however, that it would also go well with Pink Floyd; or now, the music of David Gilmore.
Martin: "This is not working!"
Me: Tf? How is that not working? My brain isnt!
It works but not the way he wanted it to conceptually i guess.
When you have an idea and want to bring that idea to reality, almost nothing is going to fulfill all the details and if you're expecting something, is very difficult to fill all the gaps in that issue.
I know this a very good work, but if it's not what he was expecting, it's not good
Yo how rf is this not working b?
Martin: "Hmm, I wonder how I can play this thing with marbles"
Well so far, it's a combination of a slide, ebow, and using a pencil as a trill (like the guitar triller) the ebow has a magnet, magnets takeaway from sustain, active guitar pickups have weaker magnets with a preamp to boost to sound, in order to give more sustain. I like how people who don't play instruments think this idea is finished, he didn't write something, he was just playing with it.
The difficult thing about art, when you’re very creative, is calling the thing finished. There’s so much joy in creating. The starting can be tricky, so when you’re flowing, you resist the finishing, because that means, at some point, starting again. And there will be, at some point you know, a little mourning period for the project you’ve finished. When the flowing tap is turned on again, that’s ok, but that flow can cease and we don’t know why. You have to accept that state; you can’t always manipulate it back. It’s worrying and humbling. Maybe that’s the lesson. Putting the thing aside is a good strategy. When you return to it, the solutions present themselves. A good coping tool is time spent solo exploring in a forest.🌳
so basically you can play any musical instrument and a few others we’ve never heard of
We love the sound of the instrument in its current state.... If the ondophone won't sound the same then what will you call this instrument?
Ondophone prototype
Protondophone ?
@@KevinLarsson42 I meant as in if it not the same instrument... Like you don't call a bass a guitar
@@CameronVarley calling a bass a guitar is a crime and davie504 will call the police
Davie 504 would be mad at this.
Me : "How many instruments do you play?"
Martin: "All of them, plus three that haven't been invented yet."
This sounds like the intro to a 2 hour Taskmaster Halloween special
I like how you play all the instruments. Even imaginary ones
If you are going to get rid of it (please don't btw), at least keep it as a new instrument and use it to make music. I think it sounds really cool and it is unique. I would pay money to get my hands of that, finished or not. I would really like to see this thing on shelves.
Daniel Barnes ....he could burn it and take a video .

I'm a one man band and am always tinkering and coming up with ideas for one-limbed instruments, and this absolutely floored me. This ondophone concept is incredible. I'm dead now.
I've lost count of how many times I've come back to this vid to hear Martin play this... It just resonates with me every time!
Martin, it seems like a lot of us don't quite understand what you feel was missing from the ondophone. We think the sound is beautiful and very unique. Please don't ditch this part of the project; press forward. Pain is temporary. Glory is forever.
Edit: I'd like to clarify that I meant that we'd like to see Martin continue to work on and perfect this instrument and place it on the MMX, not keep it in it's current form.
yes, it sounds great, so keep it
I agree
Keep it please 🙏
I think all he has to do to see it from the perspective of the audience here, is to rename it. The Ondophone, would probably have to be much more complex, to do what Martin had in his mind. This instrument is good as it is, though the prototype might be a bit too rough around the edges, but the community, perhaps with a bit of Martins involvement could probably turn it in to soemthing that doesn't look DIY.
Flygon662 yes!! #weLoveOndophone we want more ondophone!
WHAT????? You don't like your Ondophone? What are you hearing that I am not? Your Ondophone sounds AWESOME, and your talent show at the start of the video is amazing! You have SO MUCH TALENT, Martin! Please KEEP the Ondophone! It is UNIQUELY Wintergaten! Uniquely MARTIN! You are a LEADER OF THE BAND!
Most creator will always see their creation is flawed , is pretty common trait. But yes i agree with you it's beautiful instrument
As he said; its a huge success.. Just not what he wanted
I agree that this is a fabulous instrument and a very valuable addition to the MMX. I really hope he includes it in the final design because it would be a shame not to
It is very good, just missing some things for versatility, it sounds great, but only if played like it was.
clydesight - agree
It has such a eerie tone, as well as some 90's type rock synth feel to it. Kudos to the entire team on creating such a incredible instrument with nothing but Martin's dream driving them.
Bravo!!

Regardless of whether or not you manage to put it on the MMX, it really deserves a place on the world tour, it’s such a beautiful sounding instrument! Keep up the great work, I believe, with love from Sweden!

yup, it's good to see the other side of human nature for a change. thoroughly enjoyed this.
I have no worries in that regard, i know a lot of people like my fellow students who are using there capabilities to make the world a better place. More worrysome is the developing shitstorm culture, it allows people without a well-foundet opinion to influence even politics. We should strive towards a society where people use rational thinking and argue on a factual basis as well as admit if they have done a mistake.
Oh the species is doomed but that doesn't mean you cant occasionally enjoy the random diamond you stumble across. We'll be extinct before mid century for the most part though sorry to say. Somewhat depressing considering we still have so much potential.
@@baumbiber3115 tell that to establishment leadership.

Please don’t ditch the ondophone, Martin... I don’t know what you were expecting from the sound seeing as it was a really far fetched combination between two really weird and different instruments, but I must say I really do hear the lonely prairie wolf ik space. It just seems so sad to abandon it like that... Carlos was also really enthusiastic about is and it being a new instrument. You’re not feature creeping with this and I don’t see the giant flaws with it. If you have the time and courage I think you should try and make a definitive version of this, having tweaked the sound and flaws. You deserve to have the dreams Martin from a year ago had
This. I think the ondophone will really stand out from the rest of the instruments, and has this unique and rich sound that leaves a lot of potential for improvisations and whatnot. I would be really sad if he ditched it. Achieving that good of a sound is a very rare thing...
While I don't think he should ditch it outright, it might be wise to put it on the back-burner for awhile. Otherwise he might end up with too many projects and ideas that never reach fruition.
Please keep it 🙏
It is a lead guitar w/tremolo for solos on the MMX.

I'm sorry Martin but I gotta tell you I absolutely LOVE how it sounds just the way it is lol.
Csodálatos zenegép, gyönyörű a hangzása. Gratulálok a csapat minden tagjának a kreatív tudásukért.
Amazing. The sounds you are getting out of the prototype are heavenly.
Martin please do not ditch the ondophone! It might not have what you intended it to but it sounds great!
Ebow really should be played slightly away from the pickup, not directly over the top, it will be super shrill directly over the top of the pickup.
Also if the pickup is too shrill consider the magnet type you are using in the pickup itself, different magnets will have very different tonal characteristics and it is a very quick and simple procedure to tailor the pickup to what it is you need it to do for you exactly. Ideally you would add a tone and volume control to the pickup so you have some sort of control over it, currently that pickup is running full juice straight to the jack, not great for tone.
Also a brass saddle and brass nut will tame some high end.
This is excellent. It's been ages since someone made a new instrument, and this one is cool as fek !
Sorta like a Theremin mixed with a slide guitar... Interesting sounds. Good work folks !
This is beyond amazing. I absolutely love it. It seems perfect to me .
for a movie score, this instrument would be siiiiick
It would.... Geez! Bring this man to a studio!

What movie do you suggest? Horror? I agree with you, but what kind of movie?
Martin, please tell me you've patented this. It's absolutely phenomenal, and getting to see a new instrument that creates this kind of sound physically rather than through purely synthetic means is nothing short of a blessing to get to watch.
Patenting is so not Martins way of doing things. Patenting is also costly AF and takes a lot of work.
Martin! Oh my word!!! You totally have to play that bad boy when you go on tour! Something like a mid-show ondophone session! I'm glad that I subscribed to your channel and have been able to see the evolution of the MMX and the amazing growth of your talents in so many ways! Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see how things pan out!
I have listened to the first 2 minutes and 14 seconds about a hundred times. So beautiful.
If you made the last few minutes into a full album of that style, I would buy that album in heartbeat. That's the kind of trippy stuff I have always loved. Very sci-fi/fantasy. Sets my imagination on fire. If you ever get that instrument made, make an album, then just shut up and take my money!!!

Facinating! You are all exceptional creative geniuses! Thank you so much Martin, for sharing so many journeys with us! You are a legend in the music world! ❤️
I would recommend all of you to check out Martin’s previous band and precursor to Wintergatan, Detektivbyrån. They were active during the 00s and are still held in high regard here in Sweden. Happy holidays!
I listened to detektivbyrån more than 10 years ago and loved it. Just a few months ago I discovered Martin was the genius behind it and realized that I should have known much earlier, since the sound of wintergatan is a bit similar. My mind was blown. :D
You are the modern day Mike Oldfield. Super talented how you can play all those instruments and have such an amazing ear for pitch and tone of each note. Beautiful to listen to you play. Well done, superb 👍🏼😃
@Krister Lagerström to be acknowledged alongside Martin is truly a huge compliment, I have followed his progress for years now and am in awe of what his vision has now achieved. Thank you :D
Not only is this amazing creativity, but it is a superior example of how the internet and CZcams should and can be used to develop creative partnerships all over the world I congratulate you two gentlemen for your forward-thinking, and your ability to share with the rest of us your brilliance and musicality. If only more people used CZcams and the internet for this kind of deep thinking I can't help but think we'd all be better off.
A totally beautiful instrument look forward to seeing new developments !
This instrument is amazing. While not having quite what you're looking for for the MMX, it has an amazing sound and I think you should keep pushing towards making it a widely known instrument. Keep up the great work, and see you on the world tour.
Honestly, I don't know why you're stressing. As of right now, you're cruising dude! Making such interesting content. I really don't care if it takes another year or even more to finish this machine, I don't think many people do except yourself :P. But I'm not exactly in your position so I don't know how it feels for you, just letting you know.
I think that cruising for two years may let you feel like you're going nowhere if you don't get to a point. However, I share your point of view, a journey should be fully enjoyed for the sake of adventure.
I feel like august would be about the right time for finishing. One month as of a few days ago is just not the same. Too much to be done. another year or more is just about a bit more than necessary.
Ok so, I know this wasn’t the sound you were going for, but honestly, I’m in awe at how gorgeous this instrument’s sound is. You’re a genius.
You are awesome! Keep on going! You are doing great! We all have a visionary in musical instruments of the future. Thanks for your work! Genius!
I think what you have at the moment is more of a fret-less marxophone. The way the the ondes martenot works is with electronic oscillators very similar to a frequency modulation synthesizer. To reproduce that kind of sound using strings will be very hard. I think that pick-up placement and area where you induce vibration to the string will be very important like when you pluck closer to the neck on a guitar vs bridge.
It would be like finding a way to hit the sweet spot like you did with the vibraphone and being able to move it note you are trying to play.
The Ondes Martenot is also a two hand instrument. But they came up with something cool here, that could be developed in to a instrument of its own, even if it isn't the Ondophone. If he renames this, he might be able to let go of his expectations, and see the potential of it.
His ondophone can be a later project.
I would also love to see him take on a large concept of hammer-string instrument.
The concept of magnets used here, is really clever, and could be useful for other types os string based instruments.
Martin: plays an emotionally beautiful piece of original music on a one-of-a-kind instrument he invented
also Martin: this is a failure
i know right, that opening was genuinely beautiful, id love to own one of these some day.
Honestly all it would need in my opinion to be added to the MMX would be a way to tap the notes like he had mentioned.
But as a stand-alone instument you could to that yourself
This song is one of my absolute favourites. I’m looking forward to see you preform it live some day
Absolutely amazing! You Sir have great musical as well as engineering genius. Thank you for sharing your wonderful instruments with us
as someone who DROOLS over unique instruments, this honestly made my New Years
Thank you so much!!
My love for "unique" instruments is what drove me to learn the oboe and english horn
@Arthur Ying Gaudefroy lmao!
I can see that in your channel emblem
It's just like the tarte tatin. An unexpected outcome, but a pleasant one.
i like the spooky music. you guys are awesome...good job to florian and the team!
I know you want to add to this prototype but it sounds amazing. I would love to hear more of this track and many more with this prototype. I'm sure you're really busy so I can understand but WOW! I'll be watching constantly for more content from this channel. The marble machine was already mind blowing 😆. Awesome work sir!
Common people : How many instruments can you play?
??? : How many instruments can you invent?
