My cousin and I were going to see them at a fair, on the way it started to rain VERY hard. We decided to go anyway, showed up and there were like 20 people there, they played the concert for us. Best private show of all time, they were taking request.
That’s a class act. Good for them. Great for you!
Y
You lucky bastard!!! I went to see Blue Oyster Cult in 1988 at the Pismo Beach theater..2 shows 2 hours each. I had a ticket for the first show...but a certain band member was 2 hours late...that turned into 4 hours late...to much cocaine!! But they played 4 hours...the people that waited from the first show..stayed to the second...then the people from the second left so it was just us die hards..I couldn't hear for 3 weeks!!! Greatest show besides my one Rush concert I went to.
Keep rocking brother.
What year was that?
Reminds me of my High School days, the 70's and 80's were the best time of my life until 1988 I joined the United States Marines and found myself in the middle east in a war called Desert Storm, did four tours in sixteen years, now I'm disabled and I've got PTSD it's ok because love my country and I'd do it all over again GSGT Bray USMC first Marine Recon Amphibious Asalt Unit Semper Fi 🇺🇸
Thank you for your service, I have a cousin who was there too, I understand it was hot, he’s a lineman for the power company now,,,hope you are alright 😊
This time was amazing!
😢💘💝
This song was about luv, not killing or getting killed.
I wished You never have go to war ever again.
Stop praising the country that has totally no respect for You or anyone else who served.
I hope you'll help fight the pain of all those who have lost someone they loved.
Because l love you too.
Thank you for your service!!
I am 33 years old, from Germany and I listen to Rock Radio only. I NEVER heard the studio version of this song ever, the Budokan version is the "standard" of this song. Love it so much.
studio version is waaaay slower.......
@@williampalmer6994And kinda bubble gum'ish ..still Rocks
I am german too, 60 years old now, and I can tell you, that you have a very good taste. Glückwunsch für deinen guten Musikgeschmack!👍
Was little dude and loved this song. Mom told me I would just wiggle and then dance around to this song. Her one friend would come over and would garble the song to her. I still get so happy hear this song play.
Their Budokan performance is freaking legendary.
Sacred Atheist think it’s a mashup of clips. audio is though
Sacred Atheist or, that might be the surrender video i’m thinking of
iconic enough for Waynes World! 😁😅
The thing most people didn't know was that cheap trick weren't that big in the states but were huge in japan until this performance then they blew up
Yup. Man, the Cheap Trick/KISS tour in the 70's was insane energy. Budokan would have been a place to be to see that instead of Canada, but as concerts go, even Edmonton was an electric fire of a place to be.
The Japanese media called them the "American Beatles". Even though their 1st 3 albums weren't big in the U.S. in Japan all 3 went gold and when they did this concert, it was like Beatlemania. After this concert, the world went nuts over Cheap Trick. Cheap Trick at Budokan was so popular, the record label had to make more albums of it to meet the demand. One of the legendary performances by a legendary band.
I remember how my sister and I had to put our names down on a list at the local Record Bar to get a copy of this great album because it was flying off the shelves so fast. Dubbed it onto a couple of TDK cassettes and wore them out pretty fast!
Thanks for the history of it all. This is so crazy I'm just now learning this. I have been jamming to them for years.
They always reminded me more of The WHo. Pretty boy blond lead singer, unattractive but very flamboyant lead guitarist, who wasn't really a great guitar player but put on one hell of a show.
Probably, no certainly, on balance all factors taken into account my favorite band.
Some of us were Enjoying them before Budokan.
Just saw them at a local casino a few nights ago. Great concert! Same strong voice, same great music, even in their 70s. They have not lost their edge. One of the most underrated bands ever.
They're still playing ? I'd probably sell a kidney to see them
I’m seeing them in a few months, they’re opening for Rod Stewart. I can’t wait!!!
Oh, wow, cool! Was gonna say they sound pretty wonderful for being live, bet it was a great concert.
Couer'd Alene?
I think Budokan was the best live concert EVER... the studio version of this song is very tame - but this hard rocking version is legendary! This is the version I always heard on the radio, as a kid, and it made me a life-long fan❤
Im 62, always loved Cheap Trick !!!
"And this next song... is called...
I want YOU... to want ME"
Fucking special ❤️
So they say
This was my PARENTS song before death arrived........years of sadness........until I picked up a Fender Stratocaster......!! I play music for all
Yes it is

I Want You To Want Me. I'm a one man band on youtube.
One of the best live performances of all time
This song will always have a special memory in my childhood. I was an 8th grader, we were at middle school trip to a local amusement park, 1979ish, Dorney Park, Allentown Pa. My group of guy friends were in line at a new ride called the Sea Dragon. It is the rocking/swinging "boat" ride that is often called the Pirate Ship. Anyway, it was a brand new ride with a lot of interest, a very long line. The "kids" who were running the ride had these massive dual 15" sub cabinets, maybe 6 of them up on the platform. They were pumping Cheap Trick I Want You. They keep blasting this song over and over again. They had it on repeat. It was the first time I heard this song, but it was the type of song you hear, and you immediately fall in love with. At this age music like this, with the guitars and drums, would give you chills down your back, I mean you were really feeling it. I don't know......like you felt immortal, you were young and had like a self-awareness moment, where you knew everything was fine, easy, stress free, abundant opportunities. There were also some girls in our group which added to the excitement and butterflies. It was 30 minutes of time that you don't forget. Thank you Cheap Trick.
Cheap Trick at Budokan is far more than simply the concert that revived a fading fast band on life support. It changed rock music forever. The live concert album could be that big and momentous. Cheap Trick had musical talent.
Still does - they ROCK today 🙋♀️
"Had musical talent." They still rock their arses off 50 years later, whether they're opening act or headliner.
For real. The studio version of this song sounds so dull compared to the live version
They opened for Kiss in 1976 at the Cow Palacein Belmont Ca. My first concert. Rocked the house would be an understatement.
I have to respectfully disagree about the life support, for a band that was formed in 1973,Budokan was in 1978,5 little years, some bands take 10 years to hit it big (the lucky ones that do) and that after several member's coming and going,Budokan was more like their breakthrough to the masses after a few years, now if it had been 20 years later and they were playing dives and things like that and got a second chance then yeah, i would totally agree.
I would say "Don't be cruel" has more a ring to what you originally were trying to convey, definitely put them back on the map, just my 2 cents.
This version is so damn good that I can honestly say that I have never heard the studio version. Nobody plays it. Ever. It's always this version.
There's very few bands that are better live , and Cheap Tricks 1 of em
Absolutely love the crowd doing the echo in the chorus after they realized it was missing. Beautiful organic moment
It’s crazy to think how this is the definitive version that everyone hears of this song when the album version no one even thinks of.
Who else is going through their favorite jams thinking about life back in the days? Please tell me I'm not the only one🖐🏼✌🏼️
i was born in 2004 so ain’t realizin the days before i was even born😂
I'm hearing ya.......likewise
I am an old fuck. I am 59. There is not much music from then that I can't tolerate. I play 30 instruments and love to write and jam. Our music was diverse. We liked ALL music back in my day. We rarely fought unless it was another gang, what a different definition then, of boys. Both sides would make sure it was one on one. Life was simpler yet challenging and rewarding. Been using cannabis since I was 14. 45 years without robbing or killing anyone to get it. I hope my daughter and her generation fix all that the chosen fool and the holy sycophants have destroyed over greed and arrogance! With education, tolerance and compassion maybe we will all learn to jam together. Jfff I
FREE THE WEED and $TOP THE GREED!
I long for the days of Cold War & sanity.
You're not alone.
I don't get much time to listen to cheap trick but when I do so do my neighbors
It's a good line bro', just don't wear it out. I just saw the same post at "Carry on Wayward Son."
I always say that myself. But they, my neighbors, also get the pleasure of listening to many movies I watch! Once, when playing the landing scene at Omaha Beach in the movie SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and listening to it through my stereo which cost more than My car, my neighbor actually came all the way down my driveway, opened the gate, came up the deck, glanced into the window, then knocked on the door! We could see him as a shadow on the curtains. And of course we could not hear the knock from inside so I turned it down fully expecting him to be upset! He asked, "are you watching Saving Private Ryan?" and I answered "of course!" He looked at me and said, "Mind if my family watches it with yours?" :)
@Thomas Campbell - You can't really wear it out when it truly applies to so many great songs like this. :D
I don't often get to steal other people's clever lines but when I do everyone notices and downvotes
That is so true Kahnadah! Feel that way myself at times lol
i wore out the 8 track when i was a teenanger.....they are one of the best rock bands ever..
when live performance is best version of this song, it says a lot about quality of band and voices behind it... amazing
Some old dude probably worked at that place 30 years sweeping the floors of trash at the end of the night. Little did he know, on that fateful night, he would be sweeping womens panties up and mopping all the floors without the need for a bucket of juice.
Yeah, these guys were grinders. Always touring, always playing even small venues a night or two at a time. They earned my respect with that attitude. Originally I dismissed them as a flash in the pan playing sounding like 60s bubble gum pop. And then they kept at it for another 50 years and carved out a piece of rock n roll topography for themselves.
@@radman1136 They still are. I, most unfortunately, missed seeing them out here (where I live) very recently. I'd like to see them again before I die. Um... also, 50's & 60's bubble gum pop was kinda neat! (Joey Ramone dug it☺️)
The studio version is so puny in comparison.
Maybe the studio version was really bad.
Love the way Robin enunciated the title of the song and uses his hands to emphasize it...one of the best concerts captured on film...that one night they ruled the world
Agreed!
+Rigo es Amor When Budokan came out we were all in awe. It sounded like Beatlemania. One thing I was glad I lived to see.
Meh...nobody comes remotely close to Queen Live at Wembley.

100% dope AF & intense enough to make one "Cry! Cry! Cry!" Good times, man.
This band is more than this hit song. They really made masterpiece albums through late 70s.
You kids have no idea how fun it was to be rockin' with these guys in the small bars and venues they played before they hit it big. The best energy around!!
Shut up.
Wish I did.
Wish I was there for ACDC in their prime. What an era

This thread is a great example of vehemently different people coming together over universal beauty.
I felt that this song was ahead of its time. I don't recall any other rock bands during that time having this particular rock style.
The Cars, Heart, Supertramp, and lots of others were similar. They pioneered a lot of the sounds of the 90s and onward IMO
Maybe, Sweet. Fox on the run and Little Willie.
I’ve always thought Dyer Maker by Led Zeppelin was ahead of its time too.
😁
Big Star
One of the greatest live albums ever made
Probably on of the top 10 greatest rock songs of all time.
Cheap Trick at Budokan was a monster album. I miss the late 70's and early 80's. good times great jams.
70s for me and LATE 60s

This live version just show's how good they are!
I can testify to that. They absolutely KILL IT LIVE always have always will. Totally amazing group of rock musicians ❤. Closest I've seen to their talent live is maybe Aerosmith ❤💖☠️
The crowd was awesome. Made a great song even better. Kudos to the lively audience at Budokan! 😀
Probably their best tune 🎉❤
Live at Budokan. The best album of 1979! Awesome. 41 ****ing years and it still rocks just like it did in the summer of '79!

Oh 79. To be 21 again and just enjoying life!
Um I beg to differ I'll go with Highway to Hell 🙂
@@karenfortson6942 I agree with ya Karen that AC DC had great a great sound and content but my big debate was between Cheap Trick and VH2: Van Halen was the bomb back in the day. I guess that those 3 bands are the holy trifecta of '79 but to each his own on who is numero uno! I respect your disagreement though, AC DC made an enormous impression in '79 as well!
@J. Holter You Gotta another thing coming! was awesome but I think "British Steel" was '80 or '81. Great album though bro, thanks for reminding me of some great music that slipped this old man's cranium!
Who else just loves Rick Neilsen's on stage antics? He is just hilarious, and a great guitarist. Love watching him.
High School, 1979. Cheap Trick, Areosmith, CCR, Clapton, Alice Cooper, Carlos Santana and Jerry Garcia...good times.
[edit] Boudikan was a good album. Surrender - I want you to want me. Bunny Calos nailed those drums.
This is by far the best performance of this song ever recorded
as a 14 year old surrounded by the music of today, this is still my favorite song, it gives a whole different feeling and everything about cheap trick & especially this song is so dreamy and amazing ngl

Back in the day I got records through the mail from Columbia House. Sometimes if I didn't mail the opt out form back I got an album sent automatically. I remember getting Cheap Trick Live at the Budokan this way. I thought what the hell is this I never heard of them, but rather than going through the hassle of returning it I put it on the turn-table fully expecting to be disapointed. I think it was a week later I listened to side two, I was so blown away by side one I just kept playing it.
olderthandadirt just wondering do you still have that vinyl?
What a great memory! Sounds like something I would have done. I too, belonged to Columbia House. It was a staple of the late 70s...
Ahhh, the days of Columbia House!! Soooooo many memories! 😍😍😍 I came to hear this because this is my best friends first Birthday above. I wish she were here. Shed have gotten a good laugh thinking back to our Columbia House days.
Freaking awesome! Thanks for sharing :)
Record clubs got a bad rep because of idiots not returning the card.
But, man, you could really load up on music cheaply.
My wife gave birth to my first born chanting this song (it was stick in her head), so now, 21 years later, we are "Cryin', cryin', cryin'!" everytime it pops up.
One of the best live albums in Rock Music.
True 😊
when this came out, it was one of the most popular albums ever. There was nothing but great songs on the entire album. We wore out a bunch of 8-tracks cruising around in my '70 Olds in north Jersey..
This is a song that will never go out of style, beautiful song.

I got to see them a few years back at a small venue in Southern Maryland. It was INSANE! Robin’s voice is so freaking strong still. I was covering the concert for our local paper so I had unrestricted press credentials. I stood between security and the stage so Robins voice would be heard even over the amps. Got a few guitar picks which was great. Robin is still so damn handsome! My skirt would have came off in a split second if he’d of looked at me.
Guess I'm old here!! Heard this song in the late '70's, when my older children were babies. This is the version I heard, and fell in love with; actually lead singer's voice.
All these years, and he's still awesome!!
I've met the bass player and almost got up close to ROBIN ZANDER.
How close did you get?
I've watched a lot of live shows. Iron Maiden, Eagles, Pink Floyd, Styx...I always wished I was there for this masterpiece.

I've never been a huge CT fan, but this was on a 2 CD classic rock compilation I had growing up, and it's so timeless that it's been covered by so many artists, from Dwight Yoakam to Hanson. There's also a holiday version Cheap Trick did called "I Want You for Christmas", which is really cute on its own; it starts out slow, but once it goes into the "Budokan" arrangement, I can't help but rock out during the holiday season!

The guitar is just perfection on this.
I actually got a Coca-Cola bottle with the lyric "I Want You To Want Me", and it just hit me in the head of where it came from since I hear it on the radio a lot of times.

The good old days when bands knew how to write amazing songs and knew how to play them.
Shit up.
You surely now how to be an old mean guy 😊
@@thestreetintheforest_ But a talented one, too. And you surely know how to be a snowflake and not spell words correctly.
@@thestreetintheforest_ Hey it's the truth. -another old mean guy.
It only occurred for a few years. Prior to the Beatles, big bands rarely wrote their own songs. Of course radio was deregulated in 1981 allowing monopolies to form so that the big music companies could force a major singer down people's throats until they hit #1 and making sure they didn't write their own songs, which helped keep them on a tight leash. By the late 1990's it was becoming rarer and rarer for big hits to be sung by the person who wrote it.
