The pride of Rockford. Criminally underrated band. Enormous talent. Nielsen and Bun E. stack up against any guitarist and drummer in rock history. These guys hit the big time and still drove around to gigs in a station wagon. Grounded, cooler than cool, and flat out a great band.
YES!! I ❤️ these Tricksters! Recently saw a somewhat older episode of "Daryl's House". It was great !! Of course, Daryl has his own drummer ... has an entire band - so, although Bun was not there, Robin, Rick & Tom were.

Have LOVED these geniuses since jump street, IMHO these are America's Beatles, The best "trick" they played on us all was disguising their combined musical GENIUS behind a dorky bubble gum facade, I'm talking Rick and Bun E. and Robin's lyrical prowess is simply amaze balls. And Tom can slap da bass with the best of em.
I was 10 years old and my Big Brother got us Cheap Trick tickets at the Philadelphia Spectrum. 1980. UFO were the opening band. Changed my Life for Ever!!!!
I remember him doing the same thing at the Oakland Day on the Green in 1980. Just slowly meanders to the mic in his hot pink suit in front of 100,000 rockers.
I loved this band not just for their sound but how they looked like no other band. They had the two pretty boys on bass and vocals and Charlie Brown on guitar all grown up and your high school chemistry teacher on drums. LOL
What's COOL is ricks killer guitar playing with the best stage presence in the history of rock n roll toms so in the pocket with that bass bun e steady as a clock love this band so Chicago what are thay still togther? ❤ I've heard so many weird stuff you know thats to much time on those folks hands i bet STAY well music LOVERS

That's true. I think it's because in the 1980's looks was important. The other two members were oddball even though both Rick & Bun E are excellent musicians. Robin and Tom fits the '80s looks. Nevertheless this band was one of my favorite.
I've seen them play live twice. They were phenomenal and well-received by the audience. They've had five Top 40 albums, 8 Top 40 songs (including a Number 1), and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That said, I think they are rated "just right" - not over or under.
What's truly a shame is that it took so long for these guys to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Thank goodness they finally rectified their mistake. Absolute masterful musicians, every one of them.
Robin Zander has always been such a classy guy. NEVER hogged the spotlight from his bandmates. A rare quality in a man born so physically beautiful. I remember watching this live when I was kid, wondering where the heck Robin was, and was just amazed to see him stroll in nonchalantly from the back when it was time for him to sing. I'd never seen them live before this TV broadcast (saw my first live concert of theirs a couple of months after this TV show aired) so I had no real idea that he was known for standing back and letting his bandmates do their thing. What a class act!!!
I second that you guys I’m a fan of Cheap Trick and I’m pretty sure that Robin Zander and John Waite are great friends still can someone clarify that for me for daytime television
I think that's why he makes what people here are calling a grand entrance. He wants to give the spotlight to the rest of the band for that long intro. If he was on stage, the cameras would be focused on him, and there wouldn't be much for him to do besides posing
So, so, cool. The visual (with Nielsen's nerd outfit's contrast as counterpoint) is excellent. The temp accountant that had just enough "courage" imbibed to sit down at the kit during a break on open mic night.
The look on Andy Gibb’s face at the end is priceless cheap trick is awesome and for this to be a live performance and be that good and get the whole audience engaged is just amazing
My drumming inspiration, and the reason why I am still playing at age 54. Bun showed us that you can look like a regular dude and still kick ass at drums! Thank you!
These guys played in my little hometown of Anderson, In. at a small theater. I never dreamed I could see them 5 minutes from home! Got autographs, and a guitar pick!
Remember watching this when in grade school with my parents. I was excited when they announced it at commercial break as I had just become a huge Cheap Trick fan with my 8 track of Budokan. They obviously recognized the song from the original, but my parents thought this was the worst thing they had ever seen - which made me love Cheap Trick even more!
Ha Ha Ha 😂. That’s mad. I had exactly the same thing happen to me at 16 , back in 1980 only with The Rolling Stones. My dad hated them with a passion, an when they released Emotional Rescue , there was no turning back. I had to get some headphones, which were pretty expensive back in the day. 👍👍👍🇬🇧. That CT video is bloody awesome though 👍.
The pride of Rockford, Illinois. Amazing - that wall of sound from Tom Petersson's bass and Rick Nielsen's guitar. This version might have the most infectious rhythm of any song ever.
Saw Cheap Trick at the San Diego Open Air Amphitheater way back in 89!!! Wow! What an unbelievable show these guys from Rockford, IL put on! Very loud, right by the airport and you could see the jets taking off and landing but you couldn’t hear them! So tight and what an impressive volume of great music! Probably put on more concerts that any musical group in the history of mankind! Thanks for all the great Rock N Roll!!!
I remember watching this on TV in 1980; it was a Friday night and it was cold outside. Some of the memories that I recall: 1) Surprised that they were not dressed in tuxedos 2) Why is their accountant the drummer too 3) Taken aback by Rick's stage antics and checkerboard pattern "overload" 4) Assumed the blonde one was sick and that they were playing an instrumental 4) Totally blown away when I realized they were preforming a Fats Domino's classic. I told my family they had missed the best rendition of ATAS I had ever heard. I gushed about them to my friends at school on Monday. One last fashion note: Robin's suit was quite avant garde for the times - this was still the era of the leisure suit.
It would have been so boring if they had worn tuxedoes!! This is definitely not a song to perform in tuxedoes!! LOVE Robin's suit! And Rick's wardrobe is. Off the Charts, as is his guitar playing. Yes!! They are so good!!
I saw Cheap Trick many times over the years. They always put on a great show. I do miss Bun E Carlos' unmistakable power drumming where he makes every beat count. Thanks guys for going on six decades of great music.
I got to get their autographs at Tower Records back in 1980. They were all very nice to us fans. Being a young drummer with only 4 years experience. It was great meeting Bun E. Carlos.
I knew Rick Nielson before Cheap Trick, when he was with The Grim Reapers. He was an outstanding guitar player even back then, 1967 or so. We called him, because of course we did, Screaming Chicken. He was and I'm sure still is a really good guy and a tremendous showman. He tore the house down with their version of Stravinski's Firebird. Hot guitar, man. Hot guitarman. I wonder if he remembers any of that. I haven't seen him in 50 years and he still seems like a friend. Also, his unique stage persona is a take on Sach from The Bowery Boys. You have to be a geezer to know that.
@@JuanDeSoCal Okay, maybe it wasn't Firebird, but is was something rousing, fast and strident, from the classical canon that Nielson took off with on his blazing guitar. They are family friends going back to my grandfather and Rick's father who were business partners in Rockford Illinois. I grew up with Robin and Rick at my parents house often. Robin taught me how to golf at Sinnissippi golf course in 1983. We still go back at Xmas to see family, we live in Florida now, but occasionally see Rick. Part of his family is Kurt( RIP) who was one of the Iranian hostages in the late 70's early 80's that Reagan freed. They used to go into a bar on Main/Auburn called The Barn and play a few songs with the house band. For a shit city, my hometown, we at least had Cheap Trick and REO Speedwagon.
I will Be age 73...knew all of them since their beginning .. HS days ..I.graduated Ill State U in 1970..was on jury duty with drummers ;[ Bun E Carlson's ] wife...but .correct me if I am wrong.....REO is from Champaign...Univ. of Ill engineering students who formed in 1967..I knew Gary Richrath from Peoria .REO.played all over the midwest including Univ. of Ill. and Illinois State Univ. ..including , private pubs,Chances R..etc..dorm dances , frat dances, Univ. Union dances...great bands both..I spent much time in the " Barn " on n. main st. taught school in rockford..I live a mile south of Rick Nielsen home of the rock river. great to see the locals make it big. Great memories Dana.
I remember watching this when it first aired. I was (and still am) heavily into Cheap Tric, and this was an amazing performance, even better than the Budokan version. Even if "Ain't That a Shame" isn't a Cheap Trick original, you can see how this interpretation shows off the band's musical chops. Well done, guys!
I met Rick in a motel bar in New Orleans. I was the only one who recognized him. We talked about 60s muscles cars and music for about a half hour or so. Funny guy, very nice.
I would here cheap trick on the radio back in 78/79/80 once Dream police hit man they were everywhere. “ Gonna raise hell” still one of my all time favorite tracks by them. Superb band!
in a semi state of depression old music starts playing in an endless loop 24/7, in a couple of days it wears out follow by some silence and then another one, this one is this week selection.
One of the best concerts I saw 1976 auditorium theatre Chicago...their first album just out really a local band at that point backed up rush...doing their ultimate album 2112...cheap trick rocked the house
I lived this as it happened and this was "Pop" music in the 70's. A lot of people laughed at Cheap Trick but they did not understand that Pop music can rock.
Remember, at this time is history almost all of these TV show appearances were lip synced to a pre recorded track. 100% the real deal from my boys in Cheap Trick!! Every one of these guys are at the top echelon of their instruments. The intro to this song is absolutely astounding!!! Still rockin to this day. I see they have a show coming up in PA, a few hours away, but the drive would be well worth it. Ain't that a shame the Bun E will never drum bash the skins with these guys again?? To have been able to see these guys in the 80s would be like a dream come true.
1978 portland ore. at the paramount, guitarist carried up into 3rd balconey playing the whole time, out to the lobby to toke out with my friends then back inside for more. Always regretted not going to the show in Tokyo at the Budokan hall, would have been on the live album " live at Budokan" , what the hay, saw KISS live twice there, 1977,1978, fantabulous!!
Who just listened to this again cuz its so dang good?!

I saw the Romantics live in '86, and you are absolutely right!
Are you F N KIDDING... ?? Comparing C T to... (oooh. The romantics) is like comparing ZEP to the Backstreet boys. !!
Their Bassist, Tom Pederson, Is the one responsible for the 12 string Bass.
It's such a cool story how he came about it.
They used to pop in at The Great Illinois Purchase and jam around Christmas way back when.
Those lead guitar riffs are amazing.
I graduated high school in 1980..... What the Fuck 40 years later. I love it!!
The good ol' days. Anybody listening in 2019?
Cheap trick was my first concert at about 12 year old. Still jamming their stuff today !!
I am
December 2019, Merry Christmas
YES! On the bottom of the tailgate on my truck - CAUTION - CHEAP TRICK ON BOARD!
Current year?
This is real music right here.
How can you not love these guys .
These were the days, wish they were back again.
And there you have it boys that's how you play rock and roll😮
I met Rick in a motel bar in New Orleans. I was the only one who recognized him. We talked about 60s muscles cars and music for about a half hour or so. Funny guy, very nice.
Simply the greatest Garage Band there ever was.
I saw these guys live in 88 maybe 89. That 12 string bass was a force of nature.
I Saw them in Concert at Milwaukee's Summerfest, in 1991
I appreciate these guys more and more as time goes on.
this is why they are in rock and roll Hall of Fame
Totally underated band!!
From '77 to '80, I saw these guys 4 times. Either headlining or opening for somebody. Fucking amazing live!
Amazing intro....and love how Robin comes out 😍😍😍😍
I would here cheap trick on the radio back in 78/79/80 once Dream police hit man they were everywhere.
WOW that kicked ass! No Lip-Synching there!
Haven't seen any other bass guitar like that - wicked. Nice to see them playing live at daryl's house recently and still sound great.
A solid rock and roll band for ever.
Ridiculously GREAT Rock N Roll ! Saw them Live a couple of years ago... They Still Sound Just as Good !
Fuck yeah! First rock concert I ever saw was these guys! Think UFO opened up. They were awesome too! From that point, my rock journey began!
No back up tracks here. A reality check. The real deal.
I lived this as it happened and this was "Pop" music in the 70's. A lot of people laughed at Cheap Trick but they did not understand that Pop music can rock.
Robin, one of the most talented of the 70's and 80's. One of the sexiest for sure.
Oh my my, Robin Zander melted my heart back then. Beauty and a voice from heaven.
Gotta love that obligatory applause throughout. Such a leftover from the 60s. Love it.
