This is the most productive fly I have ever used. In the northeast it works miracles when trout are eating emergers. I was standing on the gunpowder btwn 2 guys using elk wing caddis and I caught about 10 fish while they caught none. They finally came over and asked what I was fishing. When they saw how small simple the fly was they were shocked. This fly is my all time favorite and I always have a ton of them on hand. Only downside if after you caught a bunch of fish the CDC needs be dried and dressed. Sometimes I have to change to a new one. Thanks and love the videos. Thanks for the nice tie and the info on the beaver dubbing. I wish I had known that beaver sinks. I thought because it was a water animal it would repel water. Floatant required. I had used it interchangeably with superfine! Oops All the best to you, Sean
Another great video! I want like ten of every fly you have showed us how to tie but i don't have enough room in my boxes! I have started to get a bit more invested in fly fishing and i live right on the coast so i want a nice salt water rod for stripers but i don't feel like shedding out $600-$800 so i thought about building another rod. But I have no clue where to look for a nice saltwater blank. I was wondering if you had any experience in Rod building and could point me in the right direction. Keep up the good work. And honestly I don't understand how you don't have twice as many subs a davie:)
If anyone can point you in the right direction in terms of a blank for a saltwater fly rod, it would be the guys at Mudhole.com. Good prices too. Davie McPhail does great work and has been doing it a good bit longer than me. I am proud to be one of his many subscribers.
Angler's Workshop has an excellent selection of brand name rods and generic rods for both fresh and salt water. Also, all the other components necessary to make fine quality custom rods.
Thanks Tim, cool pattern. Craven has some very cool patterns and you're an excellent tier. I also am proud to be a McPhail subscriber as well as one of yours. This fly looks like a funnel dun. I can see it morphing into a Usual or rabbit's foot emerger. Do you know if it was tied with mole? I've never used it but I understand it's not easy to work with, maybe because it's a short fiber. I know beaver is known for making tight bodies on small drys, but always thought it had hydrophobic qualities like mink, as long as it's not processed like being tanned. Anyway it's so simple I think even I can tye it even in #20. I'm still stuck at #14 working on #16 and beyond! Thanks for another excellent tutorial, I always learn something.
My only difficulty with tying this fly is holding back the CDC while also hold the bobbin in my left hand. Any suggestions? I can't really see that on the video. Thanks for it anyway. Tim, you are the best.

Tim, can you use possum instead of beaver? Does possum sink as good as the beaver?

I think I found a way. I use hackle pliers to hold back the CDC and whip finish as usual.
Isn’t beaver dubbing used for dry flys because it repels water better ?
