  • When I guided on the South Platte River it seemed that at least one of my clients always had an RS2 on, and I would bet that half of the fish my clients caught were victims of this fly. Confidence in a pattern can make all the difference, and I have a lot of confidence in the RS2. The pattern that we will tie here is not Rim Chung's original, but a variation that I developed over the years using alternative synthetic materials. Synthetics are, in my opinion, more durable, cheaper and easier to get, and more consistent than their natural counterparts. While the standard RS2 color is gray, this fly is also a killer in black, brown, and olive.
    Materials Needed:
    Hook: TMC 101 #16-24
    Thread: 8/0 Gray UNI
    Tail: White Tailing Fibers
    Abdomen: Gray Super Fine Dubbing
    Wing: Bright White Antron Yarn
    Thorax: Gray Super Fine Dubbing
    All materials are available for purchase at charliesflyboxinc.com/

    I recently met Rim Chung on the Arkansas river. I had some size 20 rs2’s in my box and he said “too big.” Pulled out a 24 from his box and gave it to me.

    700 dozen out of a package of 2.50 Super Fine, now only if we could buy 700 dozen TMC 101's for that price. No mind I tied RS 2's I like this one, super cheap and the materials are everywhere. I tie all my Griffiths Gnats on the 101 from # 18 on down to 26. I have a dedicated box full of them. Along with Adams, I catch a lot of trout. My fishing logs show me over 50 years there is less than a dozen patterns I catch 98% of my trout on.

    Thanks as always Charlie. I struggle with the dubbing, keeping it thin and tight to the thread, especially when I start to wrap. How do you do it? Any dubbin wax involved? Help?!

    Hey Charlie! I spend a lot of time on the Taylor/Gunny, have you done a video on tying a Blue Winged Olive? I tie way more nymphs than dry flies and I’d love to see how you tie those! Thanks in advance!

  • @tysonolsen6147

    Do you just fish this one as a dry? Been fly fishing several years, but haven't added this to my box.

    • @CharliesFlyBox
      @CharliesFlyBox  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Tyson, typically fished as a nymph with some split shot down on the bottom, but you could grease it with flotant and fish it dry as well, but it’ll be very hard to see.

    Can polypropylene yarn work ok for the wing? Or is Antron best

    • @EatShredSleep87
      @EatShredSleep87 Před 25 dny

      Poly yarn works my friend. So does deer hair…pretty much any time you have such a question you should just tie it and try it.

    Actually, this is a Polly Rosborough pattern from the late 1930s. The only difference is Polly did not use paint brush bristles for a tail. Nest to the Casual Dress, it is Polly's most famous fly. It should be called the Rosborough Style 2.

      I use it wet and dry on my tail waters. It is a great fly. Size 20-24.

      I usually put it behind a larger dry fly keeping it right in the film of the water (so i can see if something eats it) or i put it under an indicater as an emerger. Tailwaters of colorado it is a go to
