- Whether you’re booking a table at your neighborhood sushi joint or trying to schedule a last-minute haircut before your big event, sometimes you just need to pick up the phone to get something done. Here's a look at a new feature we're developing for the Google Assistant that uses advancements in AI to help you get things done over the phone.

I just hate it that now it tells that it's a Google assistant. The very fact that it was getting more human like is what made us advance into the future.
Oh, so now it tells the person that it's Google Assistant, nice.
So that whoever answers the call will get distracted and either hang up or try to Turing test it? Lovely.

Bara' Adel Awwad it doesn't really matter. If they are "fooled" into thinking it's a real person, it makes no difference. If people know that they're talking to an artificial intelligent, they won't talk to it like they would a real person (I wouldn't be surprised if most people hang up on it). What does it matter if the person knows it's an artificial intelligence or not? If it can "fool" people into thinking it's not an artificial intelligence, it shouldn't have to announce itself as one anyways.
Victor Lazo recording phone calls has never been illegal. Anybody can record any phone call they want without telling the other person and it would still be legal. an artificial intelligence recording a phone call instead of a human doesn't change anything.

I suppose you can just use a UI interface and not talk at all. And you can do this from a bus or a metro where there can be pretty bad conditions for talking on the phone.

Absolutely phenomenal! If Apple had done this with Siri, everyone would be talking about how innovative and next gen Apple is; Google isn’t getting nearly as much credit as they deserve for this!

I liked it better when it was more natural and you didn't know it was an assistant. Now I foresee Google Assistant getting hung up on.

Yeah, no business is going to want to hang up on a customer, even if it's their assistant calling. I bet the Google Assistant is a hell of a lot more polite than many people as well!

I agree. The Google Assistant shouldn't tell people that it's an artificial intelligence. If you can tell from the way the voice sounds, then you know. If you can't tell then it doesn't really matter.
Aaron Harrington if you saw the original introduction at Google I/O this year, it was very human like.

omkaar Shenoy if you compare the assistant you had 2 years ago to the one you have now, it's a hell of an improvement. The more people use, the better it gets. It's machine learning. We need to use it so it can learn how we behave.
Tiago Martinho I am talking about the voice of the assistant. They could make it less roboty like duplex. I am pretty sure a update would be enough. Anyhow I hope they will fix it when duplex is released to the public
omkaar Shenoy there are different voices for the Google Assistant. You can select different voices in the options and find the one that you like the best. Some sound robotic, but the default voice doesn't sound robotic at all.

Has something to do with the narrowness of the make-reservation conversational domain, relative to the general Google Assistant.

A better example would have been the individual desires to return something. As we know, being on hold for a half hour isn't fun. Just tried to clear something up with Spirit Airlines. SOON as you call, no "hello, please wait" or "we are expecting high call wait times" instead music played.........I eventually hung up.
Now imagine the Google assistant doing that task......they'd be a lot more patient than I would and likely would have finally gotten a hold of someone.

Finally I'll be able to make phone calls with Google Assistant so I don't have to, and avoid having long awkward phone calls.

I'm in Florida and it's not working. Google home says for me to set it up and my Chromecasts don't show up in any of the apps. The Google Assistant is only working on my phone.

This service will be calling businesses. If a business wants to make money, and nearly all of them do, hanging up on their customers will not be beneficial for them.

That's smart telling them it's an automated assistant, because the restaurant / service rep who answers can tailor their answers (use simpler and direct language) so it can be better understood by an automated system.
Leuel48Fan the whole point of Google Duplex is for it to understand normal language. There for it shouldn’t be needed to use simpler language.
Right... eventually. But for now in beta testing this is understandable. Even in the final version, as long as the disclaimer is quick and unobtrusive, shouldn't be too bad.

Hopefully we'll be able to remove the starting message that says they're the Google Assistant. I think most people would just refuse to talk to the Google Assistant, or talk differently to the point where the Google Assistant cannot understand. I personally will not be using it if it tells the person is talking to that it's the Google Assistant when it starts off the conversation.
+Aaron Harrington If someone works for a business that accepts telephone calls from their customers, such as a restaurant or hair salon, and they refuse to speak with their clients' human or digital assistants, their boss will probably have a talk with them, or they will have to find a new boss. :-)
A business is in existence to make money. Therefore, turning away customers would be against their own interests.
Some people will see using an assistant for calling instead of calling them yourself as disrespectful, so retaliation (closing the phone call) would not be wrong, in their eyes.
+MVD If a corporate CEO has his human administrative assistant call a restaurant to make a reservation, does the person answering the phone at the restaurant perceive that the CEO is being disrespectful because he is not making the telephone call himself?
There will probably be some short-sighted people who refuse business for irrational emotional reasons. However, if these people refuse a significant amount of Google Duplex calls once this technology becomes popular, many of their customers will find other businesses to patronize. If enough of their customers do this, the business owner and his/her employees can stew about being disrespected in the unemployment line.
When the telephone was starting to become popular, there were probably businesses that did not immediately have telephone service. However, once a certain critical mass was reached, nearly all businesses needed to accept phone calls if they wished to continue earning money.
There are also the people who cannot speak, where this would be great, since you can interact with the Google Assistant with the keyboard, and then, once the assistant has all the information it needs, it can converse with the restaurant over the phone in a natural speed.

Too bad you gave in to the vocal minority of afraid journalists. The time it takes to introduce itself and the new more robotic voice will probably scare off some businesses. Why should a robot assistant have to present itself differently from a human assistant?
+jedijens According to Ars Technica's article on Google Duplex - arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/06/google-duplex-is-calling-we-talk-to-the-revolutionary-but-limited-phone-ai/ - the service will use several different voices. The voice presented in this video was only one of the possible options.
Right now, this technology is new and therefore something that people have not become accustomed to yet. Therefore, at least for a time, in an effort to allow people to be more comfortable around it, it will clearly announce itself. However, maybe in the future as this type of technology becomes commonplace, such an introduction that it is an AI will not be necessary.
In addition, there are state laws on recording telephone calls. Some states are known as one-party states, which means as long as one person in the conversation knows that the call is being recorded, there are no legal issues. However, other states are two-party states, which requires that both parties know that the call is being recorded. Therefore, in order to not run afoul of the two-party recording laws, Google Duplex informs the recipient of the call that the conversation is being recorded.
Google currently records the call to further improve its technology and if there is a problem with communication, can reroute the call to a Google call center, where a human Google employee will then continue the conversation.
Eternal Tech then I can just say "this call is being recorded, is that okay?". It doesn't need to announce itself as an artificial intelligence, and I doubt most employees at a **workplace** care that is being recorded. Besides, they most likely will have some option in the settings that prevents it from being recorded and sent to Google. Most other Google products have privacy settings like that (including the Google Assistant), so I don't see why Google duplex wouldn't.
