Self-Driving Car Test: Steve Mahan

  • We announced our self-driving car project in 2010 to make driving safer, more enjoyable, and more efficient. Having safely completed over 200,000 miles of computer-led driving, we wanted to share one of our favorite moments. Here's Steve, who joined us for a special drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way. We organized this test as a technical experiment, but we think it's also a promising look at what autonomous technology may one day deliver if rigorous technology and safety standards can be met.

I just don't want Human drivers to become obsolete. I think for disabled people this is a great thing. There should still be a choice if you want to drive yourself because I love driving myself it's one of the few things I truly enjoy!

I lost my peripheral vision from a stroke, my husband died a few years ago and now I am basically a prisoner in my own house. THe area I live is just outside the bus routes, so I have no transportation. I didn't realize how much losing that driving would impact my life. I can't go to the store, to church or even doctors appointments. II so wish these cars were more available. Keep it up Google & others so you may help others in the future like me.

This is incredible and would benefit so many people. It will increase safety, taking out human errors... Sleeping behind the wheel, drunk driving, speeding due to road rage, careless young drivers ect.
it will benefit the elderly, handicapped, blind who are unable to drive.
And long road trips for families and truck drivers will become easier and much more enjoyable.

Dafuqsus Not necessarily, especially when it comes to whether or not this will make money. Which it definitely will. The market for cars is large and competitive (not to mention the fact the thing drives itself), meanwhile the only money they are making from something like Google Translate is ad revenue, if any.
Google would be more inclined to perfect and refine a product like Google Cars, Google Glass, etc., because there is a market of people willing to buy them. Google Translate is just a free web service.
Its a bit sad that technological research is run purely on whether or not it will fill your wallet at the end of the day, but at least it encourages people to work towards something

      @g55gamingsvids Před 10 lety +29

Spelling isn't a problem for Google translate, it's grammar that's the problem, and this is different, the spoken word is fairly dependent on judgement calls that only humans (currently) can make properly, in order to formulate natural sounding sentences. With a self driving car it is 100% dependent on calculations, something that computers are much better than humans at.

This technology should be incorporated into driving test so that no bias is incorporated into the result of a student driver.
The result should be able to re-evaluated if pleaded by student drivers.
There is lot of biases and differences which different examiners incorporate into test results of students.
    Hope so.

Actually, in a normal car (assuming you even meant an automatic rather than a manual), you ARE doing something. Even in an automatic, you have throttle pedal and the brake pedal and the steering wheel to operate, duh! Plus, of course you even have to put your automatic into your chosen mode. There's plenty of stuff you have to do even with an auto!

I really like controlling the car on my own, though; I would never be happy with just sitting in the car all of the time and doing absolutely nothing. I'd probably do some steering on the trip or something.
Also, did anybody else notice how the car never seemed to signal?

That is why this wont happen for a long long time. The government will lose billions in fines. This could save gas as well by coordinating traffic with less waves when the light turns green, but again that means less money for the government to tax the oil industry.

It'll accommodate them by doing what you would do to handle idiots on the road. And plus, this it's all being tested right now. When it really has a use is when close to everyone on the road has self driving car in the years to come, and there will be no idiots on the road in the first place.

Driving and mobility issues can be the largest ibarriers in the type of life one can lead. Independence is a key factor in the decisions people make. Can I do this on my own ? Why should I have to call anyone for help? I did not realize how much this technology could change the lives of so many.
