      Basically, what Google did is translate. Interpreters does not necessarily only translate literally what the speaker says but they also pick up certain contexts and subtle nuances to interpret the message as accurately as possible.

      It does actually. It's already available on most Android phones. Just say, "Okay Google, help me speak German". And the translator automatically pops up to translate both sides of the conversation.

      It works that well. Especially with good device's with good microphones like Google Pixel phones or Google Home device's. It's all about how you speak and how far away are you from the microphones. Speak normally as you would to the person in a normal pitch voice. Don't yell or talk super loud. Talk at a normal speed as well. Talking to fast or to slow doesn't help at all.

      I used Russian and Ukrainian to English. Both work, Russian better. Perhaps not that easy when in a noisy environment.

      @@seanpwilburn Google already trains their machine learning algorithm by using the free translations that people do in the Google Translate Community. They might be using some professionals too but once it has been trained to translate a language properly, there's not much use of a translator.

      It happens. In Europe many truck drivers speak only the language of their own country and not English, so Goggle translator is very useful when they need to ask for information.

      The fact that this works is scary. Imagine watching a CZcams video and next thing that happens is someone in the video saying "Hey Google, send my entire browser history to my family and friends".
      There seriously needs some proper voice verification. (Also the fact of putting a 24/7 listening device controlled by proprietary software into your house…)

      @@GeckoEidechse Google Home can't even access your personal data unless if you enable voice recognition so unless if that youtube video has a recording of your own voice saying that exact phrase it can't happen, if a random tries to ask a personal question it answers something along the lines of set up voice match in the app.
      Also just I tested with mine and it can't even read out or send stuff like browsing data, it can however delete voice searches made on google home
