Hi Keith, I just found your channel and subscribed! That is an amazing bowl but a little beyond my ability right now,,,I've only been turning for about 1 year and mostly with carbide tools. If you don't mind me asking,how do you hold the sand paper onto your high speed multi tool?I don't have a multi tool but am thinking of buying one. Thanks, I'm glad you liked the vid. the way I sand with a multitool is to use the sanding drum that is "usually" part of the tool set that comes with the multitool itself. you can also get replacement sanding drums and mandrels from places like B&Q, Wickes and Homebase, so all over the place. here are a couple of links the the kind of thing i use. A very nice winged bowl. Clearly, this type of turning is for a more experienced individual. To me, the feet of the bowl pose a safety issue if your fingers or tool happen to get caught by one of the corners. Great care must be exercised when turning a bowl of this type. However, your long sleeves on your garments are definitely safety hazards. If the corner of the bowl were to catch the sleeve, you could very well be seriously injured at the speeds your were turning the wood. Safety should be your number one priority. Other than this, you definitely turn a nice bowl!!!!!! Thanks for the video! Great job!
Hi Glasscutr, you are correct about the long sleeves, but in my defence it was very cold that day.... :-) I have a way of working that just comes naturally to me, that means that I don't rush things and don't put hands, fingers, arms or legs where they shouldn't be. But you point on safety is correct. I'm glad you liked the bowl, and if your patient and work slowly then it's not that hard to make one of these. You just need to work carefully and think about each small cut as you do it. thanks again for the comment.....
Dave Paul Hi Dave, well to tell the truth, I cheat... When designing the bowl I take into account the clearances I will need for my (various) sanders including the flap wheel on my 4inc grinder. and I only need to hand finish at the highest grits 1500 and above, and yes it still takes a lot (comparatively) of sanding.

Hi Shelly, Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. To answer you questions, no I removed the tenon. But I didn't film it as watching me sand it off would have been very boring. I used a belt sander first with a very course grit, and this removed most of the material and then switched to a DA, (random orbit) sander with progressively finer and finer grits to smooth out the curve of the bottom of the bowl and to make sure it was consistent all round. So no magic just sanding......lol
Keith, as you were finishing the turning on the inside of the bowl, it looked like you were making tool contact above the center of the piece. Is this just because of the angle you were shooting with the camera? Or were you actually making chisel contact above the center point.
Brian Mero Hi, I'm pretty much on centre hight but anywhere within 10° of centre would be OK and when finishing the centre it's always good to come into the centre slightly higher than centre and come down to the centre.
Its a very old B&Q own brand lathe, The actual brand is "Performance power pro" I have added the motor and speed controler which cost a lot more than the actual lath originally cost.....lol. I'm currently in the middle of adapting an even older lathe to replace it..... new is always too expensive, as I like free..., I've got another video coming up ....soon, ish. and hopefully you'll see it then.

Hi Victor, Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I can't remember the exact size of the blank but your estimate is about right. However the blank itself was not actually square, it was about 10 by 12.5 inches which is why the finished bowl has "ends" with a flat area between the feet but the " sides" come right up to the lip of the bowl.
Well... I didn't. 🙂 It actually closed up all by itself once the pressure was removed from that part of the wood. Sometimes by making it thin the wood can relax a little..
Hi doublekkkids. It was a long time ago, but the original blank was rectangular and was approximately 11'' by 14''. you can see the longer axis has a small flat area near the lip of the bowl. Were the shorter axis has the lip of the bowl right at the edge of the piece.

Nice job! I have a piece of walnut 2 inches thick and wanted to try this. Maybe glue up a 4 inch thick piece. I think it would look funny with a glue line though.

I know its a poor craftsman who blames his tools, but it looks as if the block I chose to use was most of the problem. I decided to just turn th feet off the bowl and make a small candy dish. Even doing that the side cracked (no catch this time). I am doing a bit of enforced shop absence, but when I get back into it, I am going to try again. This bowl is just too interesting not to..
It isn't strong, but still noticeable and pretty nice sounding. Especially in words like "bar" and "coming". :-) Malamutes are actually the only dogs I can stand visually. :-)) I like all those polar pull dogs - Samoyeds, Malamutes, Laikas, Huskeys, etc, etc. Hate poodles and anything under 40 cm tall. Including humans. Oh, and nice bowl. Finally a bowl that's NOT segmented. :-)
The second hand tools were around £5 to £10 some of them I got fro free when a friend cleared out there garage. The tools I bought from craft supplies were around £30 to £40 depending on the tool. I also go some tools from a woodworking show up in harrogate last year.
Keith Worswick I thought they were an Alaskan malamutes. I am actually thinking about getting one myself, do you have any tips on taking care of them and where did you get them.
My daughter actually found a litter for sale on gumtree. these two are sisters from that litter, as for taking care of one, just be kind and gentle with it, they are naturally well behaved and gentle dogs.

Hi Michael. Well.....actually I didn't. it's still there. Have a look at time index 19:01 when I'm oiling the bowl and you will see that you can just make it out a fault in the grain pattern. I have found that... "sometimes"... when you have a crack in a piece it will close up when the wall thickness is small, and will close up even more when the wood is oiled. I also think that, so long as the fault in the piece is small and Natural then it can add to the appeal of the final piece.
You should never use a skew chisel anywhere near a bowl,,. treat yourself to a round nose chisel for taking any tool marks and the central pip ,, stay safe .
I am very concerned about wearing long sleeves while turning. That could grab on the spinning wood and pull your arm into the work before you can say oh nuts.

I have attempted this style bowl a few times, always end up spending far too much time sanding to make the legs look halfway decent. Any pointers?

I bought most of them from craft supplies at millersdale Derbyshire, but I also got some of them from second hand sales.

Hi Hotrod Hog, Yes it was around 3 inches thick, and the bottom of the bowl was about 1/8th of an inch up from the feet when finished.

Delbert Freeman when doing the corner feet, use a small very sharp tool and spin the job as fast as you dare.... :-)

But it was only quite small by the time the turning was done. You can still see it in the last bit of the video.

Hi Michael. Well.....actually I didn't. it's still there. Have a look at time index 19:01 when I'm oiling the bowl and you will see that you can just make it out a fault in the grain pattern. I have found that... "sometimes"... when you have a crack in a piece it will close up when the wall thickness is small, and will close up even more when the wood is oiled.
I also think that, so long as the fault in the piece is small and Natural then it can add to the appeal of the final piece.
I was thinking that you will glue it.

You should never use a skew chisel anywhere near a bowl,,. treat yourself to a round nose chisel for taking any tool marks and the central pip ,, stay safe .
I am very concerned about wearing long sleeves while turning. That could grab on the spinning wood and pull your arm into the work before you can say oh nuts.

Very nice. It does, however, drive me nuts to see someone turning with a ring on. Please take it off. It makes me nervous.
Rick Daniel yes you are right. I don't normally wear it whilst turning, but for most of my videos I think I'm wearing it.
