- Welcome to our channel! In this video, professional wood turner Emma Cook from England shows you how to turn and color a wooden platter. Known as "The Tiny Turner," Emma explains simple techniques step by step for impressive results.
We work with a 25 cm wooden blank, and Emma demonstrates how to round it and securely attach it to the lathe. She then turns the back of the platter and adds interesting textures that can also hide minor mistakes.
Emma primarily uses a 3/8 bowl gouge and provides valuable safety tips for woodturning. She shows how to create a recess to make the workpiece more stable.
A highlight of the video is the centrifugal technique using ebonizing lacquer and special colors. Emma guides you through the entire process, from applying the lacquer to using color and metal pigments for stunning effects.
After coloring, the platter is returned to the lathe for the final touches. Finally, the platter is treated with a food-safe oil to protect the wood and enhance the colors.
This video is perfect for anyone interested in woodturning, workshop projects, wood, and turning tools. Subscribe to our channel, like the video, and leave a comment. Have fun woodturning and see you in the next video!

The bowl looks like an iris with a galaxy for a pupil.😵💫 Stunning.
I find your accent, your voice, and your mannerisms absolutely charming. The things you make are fantastic.

This is so great. I'm curious what kind of spray lacquer you were using?
Thanks for the video, I always appreciate your videos. I notice you don’t have any wings on your bowl gouge. What angle/grind do you use?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✌✌✌

Emma. You need to use an organic respirator for lacquer not a dust mask. 😮
I normally use a full, powered respirator with gas and particle filters, but unfortunately this was filmed in Germany and I was limited as to what I could bring 😢
And my case was stuck at the airport when I filmed this one (which had a half face mask in it with an A2/P3 filter on it 😢
Nice Job! But y are a bit to small for this Stratos. It looks very uncomfortable ...
