  • I truly believe that the biggest challenge in training contract and vacation scheme applications for law firms is tailoring your application to the firm. This is really important as application answers that aren't tailored usually will fail. To give yourself the best chance of success, you need to "tailor" your application answer is to avoid making them generic (or not specific to that firm).
In this video, I go over three ways that you can tailor your answers for training contract and vacation scheme applications, to make sure you're able to stand out from the crowd.
I hope this video will help you improve on your written applications, impress the firms you're applying to and make sure that you're getting through to the next stage of the process! As always, use the comments section to let me know your thoughts and what topics you want me to cover in the future.

Excellent video Idin! Another more unique source I like is a firm’s pay gap report. It usually contains an insight into the firm’s diversity initiatives, and some firms publish thejr ethnicity pay gaps too! Candidates can easily link this back to why working in a diverse environment is important to them.

Love this - Thanks for the suggestion Shannon (and for watching the video)!
I'm really interested in "unconventional" places people look for law firm research and I'll definitely be adding your suggestions to the list in future.
Really important stuff to know about a firm 🙏

It really helps with someone with little knowledge about UK employment opportunities.
Please make a video on how to best use work experiences for international candidates like myself from their home country to use in UK to really make the CV or cover letters appealing to firms.

Thank you, I am a fresh law graduate, currently waiting for my Malaysian Professional Bar Exam (we called it Certificate in Legal Practice--CLP), but got postponed by the qualifying board of the Malaysian Law Society. So, I took up an internship which did not end well because that time I had no clue and out of no where, the boss (a sole proprietor rather than a law firm) got my CV and took me in. After a while, I found out that she was kind of using me to help her solving her problems and expected me to be a competent lawyer. So, this job only lasted for 2 months and I quit last week. I am now watching your videos to really reflect on my own needs and expectations in taking up another training contract while waiting to sit for my exam which according to the announcement given was quite unclear (they only mentioned the exam might be held tentatively from Feb to April 2022). Hmm, this pandemic had really delayed my time to be a qualified lawyer.

Thank you for watching the video.
Please don't focus on feeling delayed or behind. Your career will be long and, in the bigged picture, a year or two delay won't be as important as you feel it is now.
      Keep at it 💪

Hi, the video was really insightful, however I just have a question regarding linking back the application to yourself, if one is applying to a Private Equity focused law firm, even though one likes that practice area but has no such prior experience in that field then how is she supposed to approach that?

    • @IdinSabahipour
      @IdinSabahipour  Před 2 lety

      Hey Ayat - Good question.
It's important to remember that the firm doesn't expect you to be the finished article when you're applying. So mentioning your interest in PE without having formal work experience isn't going to be fatal to your application. You'll however ideally want to be able to demonstrate your interest in some way at least. You can do online courses, write articles about PE etc. These things are more in your control and can be used to show you're actually interested in the field!

      Hey Tanya! Thanks for watching.
There may be a question that explicitly asks for it, which is when you can discuss it.
Are you asking about if there isn't a specific question on it?

@@tanyagupta5586 If there's no question that calls for it in a natural way, you don't necessarily need to force it into the application.
Where I often used it, though, was in the "Why this firm?" question. I'd talk about the deals the firm had completed as evidence for the qualities I was looking for (e.g. international work, specific expertise in an area etc.)
I've got a video called "How to research a law firm's deals for your application" that you might like to check out too!
