I will be deleting any comments that are fear mongering around health or symptoms, for my own protection, as well as those watching as I know people watching may also have health anxiety. Hope this is OK, and please be mindful before commenting as this is a safe space!

Thank you for opening up. In case it helps anyone I’ll share too. I had never been anxious before but had dealt with low levels of depression. However in about 2017 I had a mental breakdown because of stress. I have since dealt with health anxiety and toilet anxiety. I had no idea what I was experiencing and was terrified. I went to the doctor so many times and got frustrated that they couldn’t find anything wrong with me. I eventually learnt about anxiety. I get heart palpitations, chest pain, dizzy to the point of almost passing out, cold waves of fear and digestion issues (which intensified my toilet anxiety, a vicious cycle). I reached a point where I physically couldn’t leave the house or go anywhere as I thought I’d have an accident. I started with CBT through Steps to Wellbeing (in the UK). Then I decided to also start therapy, which I do privately. It’s been excellent. It’s taken me years (please don’t feel discouraged by this though). It’s so easy to forget how far you’ve come. Journaling can be really useful to reflect. I stop googling, I meditate, I dont wear a fit bit that tracks my heart rate. I have been very open with friends and family and they have been so accommodating. My parents have had many very late night calls from me having a panic attack, we just sit in silence or my mum talks to me until it passes. I live on my own and it can be so scary. There is so much help out there. Mind website is super helpful, the NHS also have mental health nurses who ring to check in. I’ve rung 111 who helped me while I had a panic attack. You’re never alone, and it’s okay. Please find support or open up to people you trust ❤

Ive dealt with too much stress and anxiety before. It's like I'm constantly having an internal battle. I'm always second-guessing myself and worrying about the future. It's like I'm stuck in a loop and can never break out of it. It's amazing how this product has made a difference in my mental health. Im taking Bromanrtane from Swisschems and it helps me overcome my anxiety, reduce my stress levels, and gives me a sense of focus. It also has a positive effect on my concentration and my ability to think clearly. I take bromantane every day and have noticed a significant improvement in my overall mental health. I'm more motivated and productive, and I'm better able to cope with stress.

Big hug from France Madeleine, I never comment but just had to comment on this one because you remind myself when I was between 27/31 years old (I'm in my 40's now) and lived through 4 years of health anxiety. It all happened when september 11th occured (I don't live in the US and I don't have any family or friends there) but I felt like the world as I knew it ended there. I started having pain in my belly, pain that became stronger day after day, accompanied by panic attacks (like my heart was going to stop because of beating so strong) and paranoia about my health, just like you I started having some other symptoms and that's the tricky part, health anxiety makes us believe we have real symptoms when we don't.
I started going to the emergency at the hospital and from there I started going there every week, all exams were normal, but one day they thought I had appendicitis and I went into surgery, when I woke up they said I didn't and the pain started again, from there they sent me to a psychiatrist which was also a psychotherapist and I started therapy that lasted 3 years (every week) lots of stuff from my childhood came out (I lost my mother very early in life and chnaged country) that wasn't resolved....
The craziest thing I did during these 3 year health anxiety/depression ? One night I woke up feeling so much anxiety, fear and anguish that I went at 3 am by myself through the streets of my town by foot (I don't have a drivers license) to the hospital emergencies, that's how crazy I felt at that time....endless days and night of anxiety, fear of dying, fear of having all the diseases....you name it !
Psychotherapy saved me and you know how ? My psychiatrist told me that when we feel this way it is because we have something inside that needs to come out, some sort of expression of ourselves that needs to come out into the world, we have to create something and from that moment on I understood what he meant by that, I needed to express my creativity and that's what I started doing by writing, painting, crafting....all of that saved me !
When Covid came in 2020 I was afraid to go down the same spiral and I didn't, I have to say that it was exactly the contrary of what I thought I would feel, it was the best time of my life, to be surrounded by the people I love and spending my days creating, I refused to watch all the news but I knew what was going on I just told myself that I did not needed all the details if I was not able to change things...today it's what I do, I don't need to know all the details of the things I can't change or that I have no power over, and that has helped me to better live in my body. So to everyone reading and going through health anxiety, there is a way out ! Thank you for opening up about it Madeleine.

I increased my hours at work in 2021 and I was one of only two people running a large office with people coming in constantly. I think the added stress impacted my immune system which caused me to get a double ear infection and then COVID. I started having panic attacks and had to work from home for 3 months. I ended up losing 30 pounds (about 14 kilos) in those three months. I already have a chronic health condition that affects my heart and this really threw me off. Health anxiety is extra terrifying when you do actually have health problems. It’s really closer to health trauma, I guess, for me. Thank you so much for talking about this. It definitely needs to be talked about more!

Thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing. I grew up with a parent with a very debilitating auto immune disease and have struggled with health anxiety off and on since my early teens. The health anxiety is typically around that specific auto immune disease, however it can manifest over different things. You’re not alone! I’m so glad that you got help. It is so frustrating that there is very little discussion related to health anxiety on the internet. Hopefully this opens the door for health anxiety discussions and support surrounding this.

I really appreciate this video 🧡 and you should feel very proud for using your influence and platform to talk about this!
I have had a crazy few years of dealing with OCD, existential anxiety, depression and an overwhelming fear of dying and others dying as well as emetophobia. I heard something once when I was at my lowest and feeling completely isolated which was ‘mental health can make you feel isolated, but it’s actually the biggest community on earth’ even hearing this made everything feel much less intense. There are so many of us on this planet that there is a huge possibility that someone is going through exactly what you are and finding strength to battle it too. Therapy has helped and so has opening up to family and friends, support and love is crucial. And if you’re reading this and going through the same, things WILL get better (I remember this phrase didn’t mean anything to me once, and now I see it from the other side!) we are constantly changing, growing and evolving and things may seem heavy right now but give it time 🧡🧡

I suffered so much anxiety over covid, OCD over hand washing, cleaning everything that came into our home etc.
I know it was made worse through a past experience where someone I was close to died through a extremely rare and hard to diagnose illness and for me the fear is how it effects those left behind, ofcourse I do not want to be ill or in pain but more frightening is the thought of how it would effect my family.

So helpful to hear about your experience with Health Anxiety. It's a problem that is not often discussed, so raising awareness is such a great thing to do. It can become so dibilitating. Raising awareness is really important and also understanding causes such as trauma which creates the feeling of being unsafe, which can be triggered as you said by other peoples health problems and then activates the fight, flight or freeze mode. Well done and thank you for sharing.

Thank you for posting this! Very interesting and informative even though you are not an expert. I wish you the best in whatever it is you’re further exploring. For me I was diagnosed with depression/anxiety as a kid which was actually C-PTSD, but even that was actually very ADHD informed. The mistaken diagnoses made me really anxious and distrusting of medical professionals. When I finally got my adhd diagnosis it was so mind blowing for me and really helped me understand my brain better so I hope you have a similar experience if whatever you are looking further into is correct.

Understanding what it is has been the only thing to set me down a path of resolving my issues, at least as much as I can.

Mine started when I was going through the peri menopause and then got diagnosed celiac and since can no longer tolerate dairyit has become a nightmare and I no longer enjoy food like I used to, popping out and grabbing a bite to eat just isn't possible and I am constantly worried about eating the wrong thing and becoming ill. Thanks for sharing Maddie.
I struggled with health anxiety too, and it was triggered by health issues I had had that were traumatic for me, but also ones that my parents also had and I had seen their challenges with it. It was rough.
Nobody seemed to pick it up, because I was still living a functional life. I myself am a therapist and I just invalidated my anxiety experience lololol.
I ended up seeing a psychiatrist anyway as I was having an ADHD assessment. When I tried the ADHD medication and the flurry of thoughts slowed down, that's when I noticed how incredibly anxious my thoughts were and how tense my body was all the time. So I ended up starting medication for anxiety too (alongside some therapy, I might add).
Anyway. I will add that medication is oftentimes a key intervention for OCD (I say this as a mental health professional). So do talk with your doctor about medication options if therapy and practicing skills alone is still not cutting the mustard.

Thank you for speaking openly about this. I've been diagnosed generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Sometimes I still feel guilty about getting ill because I was raised to be too strong and independend. Luckily I've been able to go to therapy and starting to come to terms with being vulnerable and imperfect (since that's just a part of being a human being). I agree that everyone has had some kind of mental health issue at some point in their lives. You give good advice on how to deal with health anxiety, but interestingly didn't mention exercise. It's so good for being able to relax when you need to, like before going to sleep. Good on you for talking about it and some things we can do to deal with it in a constructive and positive way. I think for me the thing that helps the most is to not listen or participate in social media that feeds the problem. Listen to things that help.

I've had health anxiety for years now and did get CBT for it. It's something I know I will always have. Mine centres more around cancer after a couple of scares. Every pain, feeling in my body I automatically think it's cancer. I had all the symptoms you mentioned and it was so disruptive to my life. I had panic attacks, I couldn't eat, sleep etc. The therapy helped a lot and medication.

I can get very stressed, can’t take deep breaths, I have to check on him constantly and Google different diseases he could have and worry at every noise that he’s having a seizure. Just got home from work knowing I have to hand in my notice because I live in constant pain but no doctor can find a reason for it. I’ve come to the point that I can’t manage being in constant pain alongside a full-time job and 4 hours of public transport to get to and from work every day. The lack of answers makes me ask myself if it’s in my head, stress related or physical and undiagnosed. Then I live in anxiety wondering what could be wrong with me. Seeing this was so comforting to not be alone. As a single person I don’t know what I’ll do if I can’t work anymore as I have no one to take care of me financially. Made a GP appointment for this week to discuss my options. Thank you so much for sharing!

For me I hated all the therapy where the person seemed to feel bad for me etc because I was just like ok yeah that’s sad but who cares what’s the solution. So the CBT and EMDR cold therapy stuff worked great for me cause I was like let’s just make a solution I don’t need someone to by sympathetic cause sympathy doesn’t make anything different. But I know loads of people who like a more compassionate approach.

Mine especially revolve around cancer and whatever horrible illness I just heard of.....I fear for the people I love most as much as just for myself. There's also this dimension where I fear my compulsive thoughts actually CAUSE the illnesses so it would be my fault. It's messed up. 😑

I notice that so many businesses, channels, creators, and people in general today are sharing "solutions" to health problems, but when I look into what they're selling or offering, rarely is it of any value and not really verified. Right now the trend is magnesium for anxiety, last month it was turmeric, the month after that it was something else and so on and on. Those things might have a health benefit...I love taking tumeric, but I also know that it's not a cure for anxiety. I get way more out of mindfulness meditation, therapy, journaling, setting boundaries, workbooks like "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels, and exercising then taking magnesium or tumeric. I guess the point being, we can't get "health" perfect and I try to be leery of anyone or any business who claims they can cure something so easily.

Listening to you talk about this makes me think that my husband might have health anxiety. When you talked about trying to not constantly seek reassurance from family, I commend you on that. There are points when my husband is endlessly seeking reassurance about things that might be wrong and it's pretty exhausting to have to deal with. I know that he's going through a lot, and I should be supportive, but it just wears me down when it's days or even weeks of constant barrages of questions about if I think XYZ is a problem, or if doing that thing he did was a bad idea, etc. I've known for a long time he should probably seek therapy, but he's resistant. Anyway, vent over. Thanks for listening

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  Před 7 měsíci

It's really hard for those close to those with anxiety, as we lean on them for reassurance. I'd really encourage you to tell him how it makes you feel and that you feel a little overwhelmed by it (obviously in a careful way so not as to hurt his feelings or make him feel like a burden), and that maybe he ought to speak to someone who knows how to help him. Ultimately you don't know how to help him as you aren't a professional, but someone like a therapist or doctor can give him actionable tools, or even an ear to listen to that can offer you and him that relief. You're in it together

I developed debilitating health anxiety triggered by stress during covid. There’d been some health scares in my family years before and it was like out of nowhere I was fixated on those problems happening to me - they were not hereditary so this was irrational. It got so bad that I couldn’t walk to the end of my street alone, had panic attacks on car journeys and didn’t want to be more than 10 minutes from a hospital ever. I waited 9 months to get a call back about nhs therapy but luckily I’d managed to work through it a lot with the help of friends and family by then. My main advice is to not avoid doing things, push through and keep exposing yourself to what you think you’re afraid of. Soon you’ll start to chip away at the fears. I’ve also come to realise that worrying about suddenly dropping dead is SO pointless when you wouldn’t even know it’s happened - sorry if that’s a bit morbid for anyone, but it truly helps me to think of it that way!

I kinda feel like I´ve lived with the impending death of my mother for so long, that I immediately think of the worst when there might be something wrong. I appreciate your thoughts and experience! Overall, the fear and anxiety I’ve experienced has been caused by stress and lack of faith. The health anxiety for me has been real this past year and I believe most of my issues were caused by stress. I believe in God and His son, Jesus Christ. The more that I have surrendered to Him and relied on those around me I have experienced more peace of mind and decrease in symptoms. i don’t have to bear every burden because He will! I prayed for guidance, made diet changes and got rid of excess things in my life (sort of a minimalist mindset). I also tried to slow down - driving, walking, in general just slowed down and quit rushing. It’s hard to do that in todays world, but it really has helped. I’m not completely over fear and anxiety but trust and hope in the Lord to care for me. ❤
