  • You've waited a long time for this review. After thousands of tags asking for my thoughts on the Sunny Cup and Applicator I can finally bring you my review. If this 36 minute video is too long click the link further down and read the review on period nirvana's website instead, skip ahead using the chapter function to parts you want to see, or watch in 1.5x. There is a lot of ground to cover here and I had hours of footage from my period to sort through and edit into making sense. I hope. My ADHD brain is hard to wrangle and I wandered a bit.
    There is good news and bad news. I can't say the Sunny Cup made using menstrual cups easier for me but I do think it might for others. I also seemed to have a harder times than other people did, at least according to the reviews shared on the Sunny Period website.
    The cup was comfortable for me (overall) with the stem trimmed off. It opened and sealed most days. This cup applicator is certainly the best attempt yet in this category and usable. That puts it miles above other attempts thus far so they get credit for that as well as being tenacious in bringing this to market against the challenges the brand has faced.
    I truly wished it worked as advertised for me because I would much rather post one of my "I thought this was going to be awful but it was great" reviews. I've definitely been surprised by products before. The Sunny Cup and Applicator doesn't get a 5 star review, it's a 3 star review at best from me.

    I'm going to be super honest. I have used a regular universal applicator for around 6 months. I do not need it all the time most of the time when I have to change my disc or cup in the morning is when I have problems with my lower spine allowing me to bend that far forward to insert a disc or a cup. I did not feel the need to even attempt the sunny applicator partially because it's not actually that much smaller from a universal applicator. The number one problem that I see in this is the lube you applied to the cup is not how you use a disc or cup applicator. You do not ever want to use your cup or disc in an applicator without lube however you don't want to put it on the cup or disc otherwise you're going to have problems getting the cup in the applicator. You want to line the inside of the applicator and the tip of the applicator for this really to be successful. I was not a fan of how they instructed people to fold the sunny cup. Three folds it's really smashed down in there. With a regular universal applicator you just want to use the c fold with a cup or just pinch it down for a disc. The other reason I like the universal applicator I used ecoblossom a veteran owned company. And that applicator is actually compatible with the large and small sized flex cup. The flex cup has a removal aid. I have issues with my cervix dropping if I use a menstrual cup so I try to avoid using the cups with the applicators. Instead I will use something with a string like the luma disc or ecoblossoms menstrual disc with a string. this way when I'm having flexibility issues and cannot reach it it's right at the exit. Using the universal applicator with a disc can catch so once it's inserted twist the applicator just a little bit to make sure it lets go. However a lot of the times my nightly change flexible enough to insert it normally it is easier to just insert it by hand. If it's possible if you're incapable I recommend it using a regular universal applicator with a cup or disc that works best for you. And the only person who's really going to have an issue with the size of the applicator is going to be younger people a universal applicator diameter is about the same as your regular size menstrual cup. So if you have a problem with the size of a regular menstrual cup you might have an issue with the applicator. You probably don't want to give the universal applicator to your child or teen. But it is extremely useful if you cannot reach.

    I saw this when they were promoting presale online. I considered getting on the list bc i wanted to start using reusable period products, but i had bought the diva cup before and I literally could not get it into my body no matter how hard I tried; I had always used tampons so the applicator seemed more accessible. I am SO happy I saw your videos on discs. They work AMAZINGLY for me and I am so happy with my flex disc reusable! I still havent given cups another shot so I wont bad mouth them but since using discs I really cant see myself trying anything else

      I’ve been casually checking in on the progress of the sunny cup for about a year now. Based on your review, they make it seem considerably easier in socials. When it comes to the target audience: people with limited dexterity, mobility issues, nails, sensory issues, ect. it’s definitely not the magical fix I once thought it’d be. Most reusable period products have a learning curve, so I hope the sunny cup will prove to be useful to at least a good portion of people in those groups. Thought I’ve taken a break, being determined to try cups and disc made me more informed of my body than anything else 🤷🏾‍♀️but it’s a different journey for everyone

      @@Rea13434O I think myself and really everyone in this industry is at least unknowingly or knowingly guilty of making products look easier on camera. I do try to be aware and show things to work as realistically as a I can for that reason. But brands have the goal of selling their product so videos are likely to gloss over potential issues or they use the best looking take etc. One reason I love being a retailer in this space is that 1. I get to choose the brands I truly believe in and 2. I get to whole heartedly support them enthusiastically but I also feel 0 pressure to gloss over their flaws. I like to match people with that works for them. Brands are almost always going to market to everyone and won't always highlight when the product isn't a good fit. But I do still find value in the Sunny Cup and like I tried to stress, others are finding it easier than I did for the most part.

    I would like to request a video on post op OB/GYN women who use menstrual discs‼️
    I had part of my cervix removed and cups work better for me than a disc.
    I noticed that with discs the basket will go inside out and I also "auto dump" against my will!! (Even innocent laughter is not safe 🙃).
    I have the Hello and Flex disc. Both have not worked out for me due to the above-mentioned.
    Kim, I wish I could hire you every month to help troubleshoot my discs with me!!! 😅

    • @PeriodNirvana
      @PeriodNirvana  Před 5 měsíci +4

      I’m hopeful for that one. And the disc folds thinner so maybe the exertion needed to push it out won’t be as much. I have been getting their backer updates and this company is doing friction tests so it does seem they are trying to make sure there is none. I’m still completely baffled as to why the sunny cup was easy to shoot in the air but not inside.

    Hey. Have you tried the Bfree cup before? (Canadian brand)

  • @Bbellyly
    @Bbellyly Před 5 měsíci +1

    In my opinion, I think it's not just a matter of friction between the barrel and the cup. In our vagina it is a dead end and the softness of the vagina wall combind to a round smooth barrel will turn inside into a vacuum. There is no space for air to escape. When trying to push something into a vacuum, it will require more force than normal. Or you may need to find an air outlet or break the vacuum so that pushing things in will be easier. That's why it is so easy to push out when it's not inserting into your body. Imagine trying to push a ball with the size of a bottle's mouth into that bottle, which nearly impossible.
    From what I've seen you struggle trying it so many times, I have to respect your effort to learn and find a way to use it successfully. As for me, I agree with your suggestion to reconsider using hands because in the end when removing or washing , our hands must come into contact with blood anyway. 😅

  • @crescentmu
    @crescentmu Před 5 měsíci +1

    Thank you for the hard work. I really love your nails. The only reason why I don’t let my nails grow is because I’m scared of using my disc with long nails. I feel like I’m missing out solely for the 6 days I’m menstruating.

    • @Todomo
      @Todomo Před 5 měsíci +2

      i’ve made it work, but you need to have a disk with a loop (i use hello disk), you insert it with your nails pointed into the silicone to keep them from poking, and then to remove it’s surprisingly easy to just fish the loop out with your nail tip. it’s super inconvenient but it’s worth it to get to have my long natural nails every day

    • @crescentmu
      @crescentmu Před 5 měsíci

      @@Todomo I also use the Hello Disc… I imagine the way I push it back (after pushing it up) will tear into my lining as I do so. I don’t even know if it’s possible to feel it if that were possible. Well, I’m growing them out now so the most I can do is try and learn! Thanks for your insight :)

    • @Todomo
      @Todomo Před 5 měsíci

      @@crescentmu i find it best to try to keep a finger in as you’re pushing it back, make sure the claws are pushing into the silicone of the disk, tucked away. you’d be surprised at how strong your lining is, just wash your hands and make slow movements and there should be no risk of injury.

    As I like to say: "If it ain't part of man, it's not going up there!"
    That being said, I LOVE the innovation of this product! Little things like this make me so excited about our future and our present.
    I skimmed through your channel and didn't notice in reusable pads. There are reusable pads on Amazon from a brand called Leekalos and they have been a GAME CHANGER for me! I bought several about a year ago and the work well as pads and panti-liners so I can just use the same product every day and not have to switch during my period. I thought you might be interestes since your channel is dedicated to this subject
    Anyway, have a gopd rest of your day 😊

      @PeriodNirvana  Před 5 měsíci +4

      I can totally appreciate the innovation and the cup itself is an impressive design. That is where this product shines, other generic universal applicators are larger or they are clothespin "pincher" style.
      My store carries reusable pads from a few brands, I'm a big fan of Aisle's reusable liners and pads.

      @@PeriodNirvana I guess what it comes down to is if you *need* an accessibility device, you will make a higher effort to find out how to make it work. If you don't, it will be easy to not try too hard. I have considered uploading a video that details how to properly use that applicator and responds to common criticisms of it... Because good education should be somewhere. In other words... If you'd like, I can show you how to use it so that you can create fair and inclusive educational content and actually respond to the issues of those of us with reach and dexterity problems.

      @@zobothehobo if you have dexterity issues you should definitely make a video because honestly I don't think she is the intended target customer. I would also like to note, you shouldn't take a bad review of any product personally. Everything doesn't work for everyone. No amount of tips will change her experience with a product/ products. That's fine. Make a video of your experience it will be helpful for others. We are all different.

    • @zobothehobo
      @zobothehobo Před 5 měsíci

      @@yumyum215 Its less the product review I take personally and more the intentional incompetence and bad faith effort in education. This is not the first time Kim and I have discussed her hatred of applicators. Its common knowledge if you've followed her for a while that she dislikes them and, thus, distrusts them. Seeing her not only not make an effort to understand, but also specifically make an effort to DISSUADE people from applicators is frustrating. In the past, when she and I have discussed in the comments, she's mentioned that her dislike of applicators stems from the marketing approach that they provide "mess free" insertion and the general desire to remove the user from the experience of the body. The mensturation-negative approach that the less touching you can do with your body (and the blood) the better. The problem is this has colored her opinion and created a very strong bias that interferes with her role as educator. Kim is perfectly capable of expressing that a product is not for her, but isn't necessarily a bad product. She does it often and has for many years. However, usually when she discusses applicators and accessibility, products that aren't for her suddenly become synonomous with bad products as she refuses to make a good effort to use said product effectively.
